Where are you thinking of applying, CO 2015 hopefuls?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I think it depends on schools, but i've never heard of schools that will only read 3 letters. but maybe I'm wrong.
I was wondering though, would it be bad if all my eLORS are vets? Or is it better to have people in different fields?

Yes there are a bunch that only read 3. And actually, Ohio was one of them and they do require 2 from vets. They pick the third randomly! From what I can remember, CSU only allows 3 but will let you choose. Cornell requires one from every place you had animal/vet experience. Penn and Tufts allows a bunch and even allows committee letters.

So I've been pretty set on applying to Ohio and Ohio only this whole time, but last night I started looking at Wisconsin since their OOS tuition is the same as Ohio's IS tuition. I haven't done much research yet on WI....anybody willing to share their opinions/views on WI? Please and thank you!!

So this is just a check to see if I am still the only one dragging their feet. I have not even started on supplementals yet 😱 and my PS is far from complete. Ack!

Sorry to hi-jack Jakesmom - I am applying to WI though b/c of their Applied Animal Behavior class 😎 - sadly not many schools even offer behavior as an elective, so I am applying to all that do.

yeah! i want to know more about Wisconsin as well. If I have a crappy GPA will that effect me? Obviously it will but does the school take a more holistic approach?

Wisconsin only has 20 OOS seats. They had 842 applicants for those seats last year. Their mean OOS GPAs last year were 3.77 cumulative, 3.79 required and 3.88 for the last 30 credits.

I think that answers your question.

I'll be a 2nd time applicant, and I have the most ridiculous story I'll put on here sometime soon. It'll be in a new thread entitled: 'The Idiots Guide to Vet-School Applications', but in the meantime, I like this thread and thought I'd contribute.

Im applying for sure to:
LSU
Mississippi St.
U of Penn
Auburn
Michigan St.
NC State
U of FL

Unsure about:
Kansas
OSU
Wisconson
Illinois
Cornell

hasta luego!

OK, so I think I have finalized my list. Unfortunately, a lot of schools were not an option because of the time that elapsed from my undergraduate work. So I am currently repeating some prereqs now, but that is more in case I find myself applying again next year.

Anway here is my list (also had to keep short b/c of cost):
VMRCVM (IS)
Tuskegee
Illinois
Edinburgh
Dublin

AND....I am adding 1 more from these, but I don't know which to pick since they both are a little of a stretch for me GPA wise. So any advice is definitely welcome:
Missouri (really like their curriculum - two years of clinical work = 👍)
Wisconsin (also like curriculum especially preceptorship avail 4th yr)

Otherwise I might just flip a coin 😎

Mississippi does 2 years of clinical work too. Not to make your decision any harder-- hopefully you already scratched them for a different reason!

I did, but don't have my spreadsheet here in front of me so I just panicked and had to go look up their admin info. Unfortunately, they are one of the schools that has a 6 year time limit on classes --->one other reason getting old sucks😛 Thanks though!!!

I think I have it narrowed down to 5 schools

WSU (IS)
CSU
Kansas
Illinois
Western

I'm still on the fence with
LSU
Wisconsin

Finished the VMCAS and need to start on the supplementals.😱

Good luck everyone!!!

I had 8 but after adding up the costs of vmcas and the supps I may have to pick only 4 to apply to.

Tufts and Tuskegee are definite.
Tufts because I am a MA res, and they have an amazing DVM/MS in lab animal science you can do it just 4 years!! Tuskegee because it is super cheap and offers the most hands on raw education without all the bells and whistles. I want to do some practice in a developing country and may not have my MRI on hand 😉

Then:
LSU
MISSOURI
UPENN
CORNELL
OHIO

I had Western on my list but after talking to a rep from the VMCAS site I changed my mind. She was totally hyping it up, but the sitting in a group doing cases together (with other students who may or may not know what's going on) with a professor nearby for assistance and doing computer simulated surgeries doesn't sound like my cup of tea. Even though it would be awesome to spend 4 years in Cali.. ugh. I was thinking of Oregon too but not sure..

HotTamale,

If "The idiots guide to veterinary applications" was a book, we would be co-authors.
I am also a 2nd time applicant, applying to:
Penn
Tufts
Ohio
Iowa
Mississippi
Edinburgh

I hope I'm not naive to believe I'm better prepared this year.
Good luck everyone!

I think I finally have the list almost done.
Ohio State
Tufts
UPenn
UIllinois
Washington State
Purdue

I'm on the fence about UC Davis and Oregon - I'd LIKE to apply, but they both require a physiology course which I haven't taken, and would have to take at a different school in the spring. My current institution only offers basic anat/phys in the fall. I can't decide whether I want to commit to doing that, apply to EIGHT schools (ouch $$$), and maybe increase my chances...or not. It's cool, I only have to decide really soon. And pester all my evaluators. Especially my second academic one, who hasn't answered my emails in the past few weeks. :bang:

Considering the number of OOS students that Davis accepts, it might not be worth the expense of the course itself and the additional fees, depending on your other numbers. If its your dream school, go for it though, by all means 🙂

That's pretty much what I'm leaning towards - as much as it'd be NICE, the thought of them actually letting me in is pretty laughable. Although the equine vet I used to ride with REALLY wants me to apply to Oregon. Sigh. I suppose I could apply and withdraw my app if it doesn't work out. Taking it at the community college would be relatively inexpensive, although the interference with my work schedule and riding time is not so awesome. *throws hands in the air*

Oregon State, Washington State, Colorado State, Kansas State, and maybe Michigan State.. maybe. My dream school is Oregon and two of my LORs worked at OSU it just sucks that they only accept approx. 12 people from oos. It sucks living in Arizona 🙁

Just because they only take 12 people doesn't mean you can't get in! Usually less people apply to those schools that accept less people. I mean heck I got into Auburn that accepted about the same amount as Oregon and didn't even get into my home state!

So here is my list:
UF (in state), Kansas, MS state, Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota, and Ross(back up plan)

Cut a few schools from my list (I'm looking at you Tuskegee, with your biochem lab requirement), so I'm now at:
Colorado State, Iowa State, Kansas State, Mississippi State, UPEI, Minnesota, VMRCVM (IS), Illinois

Ugh. Cannot wait until we have to submit these applications. I'd ready to start waiting impatiently!

I guess I'll crawl back out of my hole for a moment as I will probably be ramping up my SDN stalking exponentially over the next few months! After much debate and a healthy dose of dart throwing (mostly kidding on that, but hey, if that's how they do admissions, why not applications too?), I have decided to apply to 8 schools. I think. Or at least I just had my GRE scores sent to 8 schools! I'll deal with transcripts tomorrow (I need to request transcripts from 11 schools, so this could be an all day affair!). I can't believe how much I have procrastinated this year! I am no less motivated, but I think there is a bit of feet dragging involved because I fear getting rejected again. If I don't apply, I can't be rejected! But then if I don't apply, I can't get in... that's what I am now focusing on as I switch into overdrive to get everything done! Luckily I often work well under pressure. Hopefully this will be another one of those cases!

Like the RedHead and Heylodeb I can't wait for the submit button to be hit so all I'll have to do is sit around nervously, stalking SDN!

I am for sure applying to:

Iowa, Ohio, Auburn, Oklahoma, Kansas, Mississippi, Louisiana.

I can't narrow down:

Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin, Washington, Illinois, Davis.

Don't laugh at Davis - I can't help it. Lol. Davis and Wash will depend on my GRE scores. I'm too late to submit new scores to Illinois but my old scores aren't that bad... for the rest, I dunno. I'd rather not take calc unless I have to, but I will if my GRE scores can put me in good tiers for Washington...

Hang on while my head explodes.

What about North Carolina? I thought they took on a sizable OOS load.

Or...well there was something notable about them.

NC State takes 18 OOS out of the total class of 80. Also, the OOS GPA minimum is 3.4 and the avg. GPAs are in the 3.7 - 3.8 range, if not higher. Also, this year only IS students can request "alternative eligibility."

Oh, then forget North Carolina. They shouldn't even be a state with requirements like that.

Edinburgh sounds great, and I studied abroad and loved Australia, so those two might be staying moreso than RVC. I'm sure the list will shorten up as I realize just how much money all the apps will tie up, but til then, what I don't think about won't hurt me

I studied in Australia too! What a coincidence!

I feel obligated to share my short but sweet list. CSU (or bust), Edinburgh, UTK, WSU, and Penn (my instate but I am trying to get out of the state). Really hoping for CSU but also being realistic about their low OOS acceptance numbers.

Oh, then forget North Carolina. They shouldn't even be a state with requirements like that.
😆 It is interesting that they aren't doing alternate eligibility for OOS.

TT, you might want to listen to that little voice in your head saying Caaalliiiifooorrrnnniiaaa. Just sayin'. 😎

From what I understand, it was because they had a huge amount of OOS applications (>500) with a lot of people requesting alternate eligibility. Out of those who requested alternate eligibility, I don't think any were accepted and only 2 were waitlisted. I think it is supposedly because they think it gets applicant's hopes up thinking that they have a shot when they really don't. But that's just what I was told.

You know, the more money you spend and the more schools you apply to; the more likely you are to get into your in-state?

Sounds about right.

Ohio State and Ohio State only. I really have a hard time getting excited about any other schools. Then again if I don't get in and end up having to apply next cycle I might change my mind 😛 I have this horrible habit of putting all my eggs in one basket and apparently I haven't learned my lesson. Oh well. I'd rather put all my energy into applying to this one school that I think I have the best chance to get into.

I have always been the same way... applied early decision to one school, and thankfully got in. I haven't been able to have a similar mindset with vet schools though, and it is freaking me out that the only 2 I have actually visited are CSU and Penn. But... at this point I think I would be happy anywhere. Wanted to apply to OSU but sadly, microbiology is holding me back from there and a few others. I guess it is good I could narrow my list down somehow, otherwise I think I may have applied to them all... (if I had like a grand to drop too on applications 🙄). I think if i don't end up getting in anwhere this round, I am going to extend my list too for next year.

Hi, this is my first post (can't even figure out how to put a pic up like all of your cute ones! promise my kitty is right up there, just gotta figure out how to get him on here 🙂 anyway, i've been stressing out like CRAZY trying to do the HORRIBLE Tuskegee application (website is uninformative, application freezes/deletes things randomly, etc etc). I was filling out the course pre-reqs, and noticed that under animal science, they require "Poultry Science" as a course. I called, and basically they said even if you have 100 other animal sci courses, you must complete this one. You can get accepted without it, but you have until your junior year to complete it at an undergraduate institution of your choice. After all the other bs i've dealt w/ with this app, i feel like this is the final straw for me. I have 2 degrees from 6 years of school, and the thought of having to go back to take one random course just to satisfy their recc is crazy. I am applying to other schools, so this was not my only one. Does anyone else agree or does it sound crazy to throw out an app just because of this?

Welcome cmeowb!
I agree with you about the requirements that some of these schools hold us too.....espeically if we have degrees. I'm not sure if Tuskegee takes online courses or not because it is not one of the schools on my list...but if soo, Kansas State has an online Poultry Science course that was really pretty interesting (and chickens are NOT my favorite topic, lol).
GOOD LUCK with your applications!

This is a great thread. This is my 3rd time applying, first 2 times I only applied to my IS, last year I opened it up to 8 schools, and this year I think I am doing 11(EEK!). I am hoping this will be my year! (fingers crossed) Here's the list:

Mississippi
Tufts (IS)
Florida
UPenn
Illinois (on the fence, but think I will apply)
Purdue
Minnesota
Colorado (you never know)
Dublin
Edinburgh
and SGU

Good luck to everyone!! I am really hoping to not have to go through this process again🙂

Yes, Tuskegee's application is very difficult and annoying. I got so frustrated with it I wanted to throw my computer across the room. I would think of it this way: IF the only school you get accepted to is Tuskegee, would you still go? You do have a few years, plus the summer before, to take this class. I know that Tuskegee gives you a very well-rounded education, and they really focus on a one medicine/one health thing so you graduate with a vast knowledge base of many animals. (Not to say that other schools don't, just that they really emphasize it). If the answer is no, that this requirement is too much, then don't apply. If you decide that you can live with taking this one class, then go for it. And if you can take the class online as turquoisewolves suggested, that is probably a good option. For me, getting into vet school was the biggest concern. I decided that after I was accepted I would worry about this class. Taking that one extra class would not be a big deal because I would be going to vet school.
Hope your applications for other schools are going better 🙂 Where else are you applying? You can PM me if you have any other questions about Tuskegee. I applied, interviewed and was accepted there last year, so I may be able to help.

I am for sure applying to:

Iowa, Ohio, Auburn, Oklahoma, Kansas, Mississippi, Louisiana.

excellent decision!!! if you come for a visit, let me know, i'd be glad to show you around.

I can't narrow down:

Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin, Washington, Illinois, Davis.

MINNESOTA!!!!!!!!!!! hands down. i promise you won't be disappointed. the school, students, professors, facilities, minnesota residents are all incredible.

good luck!!! i can't wait to see where you will be attending next fall. 🙂

twelvetigers, if we both get interviews, we might be seeing a lot of each other. I'm applying to Iowa, Auburn, Kansas, Mississippi, Louisiana, Illinois, and NC State. Good luck, and let's hope we will both get a lot of interviews! :xf:

Okay, here's my final list I think:

Oklahoma, Ohio, Iowa, Mississippi, Davis (shush), Kansas, Louisiana, Auburn, Minnesota, and... *sigh* Western. I'm pretty sure I'll apply to Western. I vacillated a LOT on that one.

Sorry, Wisconsin and Michigan. I just don't think you would love me back.

Sorry Washington and Illinois. I'm not taking the GRE again and I think I won't stand out enough without ridiculously good scores.

To my 10... I love you...
