Many of you already did some interviews, and wore suits (hopefully), so I just wanted a heads up. Is the "Men's Wearhouse" pretty cheap, or are there better places?

Where did you buy yours from and how much was it? Where do you recommend?

Men's Warehouse is definitly cheap... and would work just fine. I know some people on a really tight budget that went to goodwill and found a good, used suit, had it altered, and escaped from the process under $100... just a thought 😉

Goodwill. 12 dollars for the suit. 10 to get it hemmed. I would definetely recommend. I also bought a tan suit there in great condition for same price.

If you have a Nordstrom Rack near you, you can get designer suits for the same price as the Warehouse.

I wear suits everyday at work, and I highly recommend Burlington Coat Factory. That's where nearly all of us guys at work get our suits.

J.C. Penny's is fairly cheap for high quality suits.

Haha, my interview suit is from JCPenney. I've never heard anyone call JCPenney high quality before, though. It's definitely good enough for me though.

Thanks for the replies.

How much did you all pay?

I got a nice brand new suit from Sears on sale for $120 (coat & slacks set).

Go to ROSS!

I'm a female, and I know where to shop for less 🙂

I'm all about the Filene's.

I absolutely love to wear suits, not sure why it is but ill look for any reason to wear a suit. Like others said go to a Mens wearhouse, thier suits are pretty cheap without looking cheap and having the that cheap fabric feel. Make sure you get it tailored properly. You could probally get a suit for around $120 and another $50 for tailoring/alterations.

I agree with Goodwill. Lots of quality suits for under 10$.

im assuming though goodwill would be a problem if you are a difficult person to size in a suit.

$50 for alterations? Holy crap. Here It only costs $15 for a "I need it for a funeral in 45 minutes, can you do it right now?" fitting of a pair of dress slacks. I've never had to have a coat altered, but from what the sign said, that's another $15.

Yeah alterations are a problem for me when i buy a suit. To start im 6'1 235 and wear a 48L coat and have a waist that is size 33, but if im buying jeans i need to buy 38 just to have them fit my thighs and ass. I need to get the pants hemed, and have the waist taken in a whole lot then get the pants cuffed. In the jacket i usally get it altered in the shoulders to give me more room in the shoulder area. Its a pain in the ass.

Jos A Bank here. Got everything there, quite happy with it.

Jos Bank suits certainly look the best of the stores mentioned in this thread, but they tend not to wear very well (should you find yourself in a job where you wear suits to work daily). Perfect suits for interviews or couple times a year use, though.

Got mine at syms during a huge blowout sale they had. They have various designers but you'll have to do a bit of searching in their racks, DKNY, Calvin Klein, Burberry etc. Prices are fairly competitive normally but they're really affordable once they have a sale.

Ross or TJ Maxx.

Make nice with the shopgirls and find out when they put out the new stock.

You get all the best stuff that way.
👍

Fillene's basement - I am a girl, but I got a designer Klein suit for under a 100 dollars including alterations.

I wouldn't speak that way at your interview....just sayin

Men's Wearhouse suits are expensive! I bought one for $499.00 😱 . Maybe it was a mistake asking the salesperson. I was greeted as soon as I entered and was asked what I was looking for. He gave me three choices so I chose the one with high thread counts. I didn't look at the price until they ring it up. It was a big mistake. JC Penny has pretty cheap suits.

I second that. I don't know if they have men's suits, but that's where I'd buy a women's suit.
The only reason to pay more than $150 for a suit is if you're going to need to wear it many, many, many times...

i got two nice suits at jcpenny... stafford brand... very good brand.. their ties and dress shirts, not to mention shoes, are awesome... as you can tell by now, i'm an all stafford guy. anyway, i bought my suits on sale... buy 1 get one free... the first one costs me $200..... so each one essentially costs $100

macys tends to have a lot of suits on sale also. check them out.

mens wearhouse is too expensive.. u will probably spend about $250 plus there...

department store is the way to go.

K & G menswear is also very good, but i dont know if they have them where u live.

Pants: $12.00
Jacket: $7.00 (clearance - score!)
What more can I want?

Revival bump:

I am planning on buying a suit this summer for my interviews. I went into Jos A Bank the other day and no one helped me, so I've decided not to get a suit there 🙄 I guess I will try Men's Wearhouse. The only suit I've ever bought, I got in a JC Penny Catalogue, so I've never had one tailored to fit me. I am excited about this but have never done it. Does Men's Wearhouse size it to fit me or do I have to take the best fit somewhere and get it altered or what?

PS: I'll be shopping for the suit in Houston, so if anybody knows any other good places, please mention them 🙂

Why not?

I got my suit 4 years ago at K&G Men's Warehouse. I still use it whenever I need to wear a suit. It serves me just fine.

I didn't buy a "suit," per se; I already owned a pair of nice black pants and a nice button-down shirt (who doesn't?), so I just went out and bought a black blazer that looked as though it might go with the pants. When I was wearing the whole ensemble together, you couldn't really tell that I'd bought each piece separately. You people who are on a budget might consider doing this.

In Houston, definitely hit the Nordstrom Rack. You should be able to find a suit for about the same price as Men's Warehouse/Jos and they'll alter it for you there (for free I think, but not sure on the Rack's policy about that). Also if you want to get a more updated suit (ie. from the last or current season) hit Nordstrom itself just after Father's day for the Men's Half Yearly (or mid-July for the Anniversary sale - which is a sale on stuff for the coming fall season). It would be a bit more going that route but they'll have more selection than the Rack will.

I'd recommend your local cemetary, if you don't mind getting your hands dirty.

Overstock.com. Get measured first and then shop away - i got a few suits that are $500 full priced at Macy's for about $140 on overstock.

Burlington Coat Factory is cheap and pretty good quality
Men's W. is pretty good too!
That's where I get all my ties

I'd second the Nordstrom's rack recommendation. They have good stuff.

Basically just hit up any big-name department store during one of their big sales. I went to Macy's...ended up with a suit I was very happy with.

for those of you in the midwest, check out marshall fields. they've been having tons of advertised and unadvertised sales trying to dump merchandise before the evil empire of macy's settles in and changes the name.

If you're in Memphis, you can check out the NYSE (as in New York Suit Exchange). You can get them for as little as 3 for $200 (with shirt, belt and tie).

Bump, I am in the market now, where did you guys go and how do you like it?

I went to Mens Wearhouse and found a suit for $169... not extremely cheap but cheaper than other places. I like the suit... its comfortable, holds up to wrinkling well (thanks wool), and steams easily.

I went to Burligton Coat Factory and got a Nautica suit for like 130. Really good deal, nice suit too. paid like 20 to get it tailored.

My suit from SK Men's Wear was 120 bucks, alterations included. Unfortunately I got roped into getting a pricey shirt and tie with it though which pushed the final total to 220.

Macy's pre-fitted worked really well for me when my suitcase got lost on the way to an interview (I knew I had a down day where I could buy replacements, otherwise I would have worn my suit on the plane fyi)

It was like 150 and looks good, just make sure that you get the "fitted" style if you of the normal or slim body-type

WOW you guys are C H E A P !!!!

This interview determined the course of the rest of your LIFE. You would think you can spend more than $100 on a suit considering the fact that you spent between $1,000 and $10,000 dollars on primary, secondary, flights, etc.

and YES the suit does make a DIFFERENCE. I know people who interview at top 20 schools (personally) and they said that the initial impression they get from an applicants dress and appearance goes a long way.

I bought a suit in LA for $350. Yes that may seem astronomically high to you but its a wool Italian suit and looks very sharp. I used it to interview at 9 schools so far and 4 more to come. I have also been complimented on my suit and even on my shoes (at UCSD!).

CONCLUSION-- SPEND the MONEY and LOOK SHARP.

I'm definitely a Nordstrom Rack fan. If you go often enough you can find really amazing buys.
