I CAME across something saying that esters and amides are e- donating, I thought that all carbonyls compounds are e- withdrawing?

I think your question is referring to those groups attached to a ring. some groups are e- donating and others are e- withdrawing. you have to memorize those special groups. If you still dont know what i'm talking about go search activating and deactivating groups on aromatics. I hope this helped.
