Hi. I've been fortunate enough to be accepted to both my state school and NYULI. The only thing I am worried about is not liking my specialty after I start. If I decide to switch to something competitive like urology, would it be better to attend my state school (250k) or NYULI (20k) with a research year between the M3 and M4 dedicated to urology as they both would work out to 4 years. This has been sitting on my mind and I'd love to hear your thoughts.

To be clear, is NYULI the program where it's 'accelerated' with a guaranteed residency spot in a pre-chosen field?

If so, the first thing you should do is contact NYU and ask about if switching is a possibility. If it is, then that's the way to go. Even if it's not, isn't NYU tuition remised currently? Because even if you can't switch within the 3 year pathway +1 research year, you could always switch the the regular 4 year program after 2nd year and apply to anything.

Just my .02, but please correct me if I'm thinking of a different program here.

Thanks
Thank you very much for you response. Yes, nyuli is accelerated program where we are given a guaranteed residency to Im, gen surg, peds or obgyn. Our curriculum is different than the standard 4 year by combining the first 2 years into a 1 year, with 3rd and 4th year remaining the same. There is a full tuition scholarship granted to every student and the dean assured us that even if we switch specialties to something other than listed above, there would be no penalty. I don't think there is any 4 year pathway, just a 3 year path, but I'm sure they would allow a scholarly year between 3 and 4. I estimate around 25k will be the overall cost for attending nyu li versus 250k for my state school.

I'd stick with the place that is free/barely anything, is reputable and looked up upon, and guarantees you a solid residency relatively of your choice that still gives some wiggle room to switch. Go NYU and don't look back. But be prepared for the rigor that is a combined 1 year that would otherwise be 2 years. The ONLY reason I would suggest state school would be if this would be too much for you. The catch 22 of it is you won't know truly if thats too much for you until you go for it, at which point you can't switch schools/change your mind. Thats my one caveat. The fact that you were accepted to NYU for that pathway though highly suggests you will be fine with the rigor.
