From what I've read, medical students spend a lot of time studying, and time is valuable, so I assume they don't spend a lot of time shopping for groceries and cooking and cleaning like other people. As an undergraduate I got almost all of my nutrition from our cafeteria and didn't have to keep a lot of food in the fridge. So, do all schools have a meal plan or food service of some kind on campus? At least for breakfast and lunch?

My guess is that since the majority of DO schools are not located on campuses of universities they will generally not have the cafeterias you see during your UG.

Shopping and preparing your own meals really doesn't take that much time, plus it's usually the healthier option (and it can actually be a bit of stress relief if you enjoy or learn to enjoy cooking). I save a bunch of money just cooking and eating at home, plus I know what's in my food (for the most part). To each his own though. Regardless, be sure to make time to take care of yourself.

Subway ftw! 5 dollar footlongs are healthier than burgers and fries, and well within our cheap college budgets

The hospital will have a caf but it will be.cheaper for you to learn how to cook a few things, eat salad and pasta, and buy lean cuisine style frozen dinners.

Most med schools without an undergrad are missing cafeterias.

KCOM. Although the attached hospital has one.

DCOM has a cafeteria on the LMU campus, but I literally don't know anyone that uses it. We definitely eat a lot of subway though.

learn to cook. All you really need to know is 4-5 things to cook for dinner. You can make nice sandwiches for lunch and breakfast go with cereal/oatmeal/yogurt/eggs/toast.

Shopping only takes like an hour or less if you know what you are looking for. So knowing what you want to cook for the week you can make a list of all the food you need to prepare them and go and buy them.

Yeah, and it's really only a once-a-week thing. So get your Saturday started early by going to the store, getting some fruits, veggies, chicken, bread, etc... coming home, chopping it all and prepping it for the week. You should be done in a couple hours with a fridge full of stuff.

Cafeterias might be nice though if you're a campus-dweller like myself. I like to stay on campus all day, so yeah. DMU has a cafeteria!

Like LMU, we have a cafeteria on campus, but quite a few med students use it for lunch. I guess the difference is that we don't have to climb a "mini-mountain" to get back to the COM 😀

Cafeteria food is pretty much all junk. The only thing that is the exception to this is usually a salad bar and even there, the dressing is primarily comprised of vegetable oil (the kind the promotes inflammation). It's imperative to establish good eating habits now. Do you think that things are going to significantly slow down once you graduate? More likely, if you don't make your health a priority now you'll be like my doctor. Fat and on all of the same statin/blood pressure meds that he prescribes to other fat and sick people. So many physicians are terrible about leading by example where diet and health are concerned.

Get pasta noodles, those pesto and Alfredo sauce mixes, and some spaghetti sauce. Quick and easy and cheap
