I want to know which specialty holds the most physicians/doctors that have the most maniacal sense of humor, and so much so, that even their patients are sometimes unsure of them.

EDIT:
My reading up on Myers Briggs was actually what got me to suspect that some personalities were more attracted towards certain specialties than others.

And in hope to further clarify my OP: Have you met a doctor who you knew would be the first to say the most outrageous, nonsensical, yet harmless comment at a group outing, and what did he/she specialize in? I'm not looking for an answer in-theory. Just want to know which specialties attract more of these types of individuals.

Thanks. :D

Well the guys in the path forum are pretty funny and their patients I'm pretty sure are unsure of that. I think alot of surgeons think they are funny, esp with everyone kissing the attendings butts, laughing at their jokes that aren't that funny (the residents, students, nurses, scrub tech etc.) in the OR.

This isn't a characteristic of a particular specialty but more of an individual characteristic. Those folks who start out with a sense of humor tend to keep it no matter what field they enter.

Hmm...anyone who deals with the more absurd or drab portions of medicine tends to be funny. I especially agree with Colorectal Surgeons and I'd add Critical Care guys. During my time in the ICU they were freaking hilarious. Nobody was safe: patients, med students, nurses, doctors (those both present and not), families.

I definitely think it's one of those "Gotta laugh to keep from crying" type of deals.

Decent question with about half the docs making believe they are not freaking stressed out..

But I also heard a while ago that Urology has decent amount of humor in it...
(the template may have something to do with plumbing jokes amd/or Lasix)

Yes, I know a guy exactly like what you described. He's a general surgery resident. I think he thought that I was laughing at his jokes because I thought it would earn me a better grade, but, really, he's one of the funniest people I've met.

One of my best friends in med school is also a little like that. He's also going into general surgery.

I think that the ortho guys were incredibly hilarious. Some of the ENT guys were pretty funny too, but not all of them. A couple of them were just down-right malicious.

One of the funniest, and most dead-pan, residents that I've met was in internal medicine. He's also one of the smartest - if he ever writes a textbook, it will replace Harrison's. He's that smart.

There's no hard-and-fast rule about which specialists are the funniest. It's very much hospital-dependent.

I hope pediatricians are fun, if not funny.

At our hospital, it'd be ... trauma surgeons. .

Dear God, not here. My experience with our trauma service was a freaking nightmare. I was considering trauma as a career option (more ortho than gs), but good grief, the one guy I'm thinking of in particular was the nastiest, most unkempt, seemingly miserable jerk I've probably ever met. And he smelled like he hadn't showered in days. Yeesh.

Hit or miss. Some were pretty cool, but I've ran into more than a handful "Won't somoene PLEASE think of the CHILDREN!?!?" types. No sense of humor in them.

Pediatricians I've met have more patient-centered humor, meant to keep the young ones from being anxious, rather than to entertain their peers. Kids seem to love outrageous comments, . . .after they have figured out that it was outrageous.

Ortho -- all the residents I know at my school are hilarious, and so are a bunch of the attendings. My dad and his friends are funny.

I worked with one urology intern (on CT surg) who was also really funny with a very dry sense of humor. On gen surg, most of the people are funny, especially the guys... the girls at my school tend to be a little more focused/serious.

Gallows humor? Emergency Medicine, Trauma, Pathology...and ER, ICU & OR nurses. ;)

I find cardiologists at my school to be pretty funny and easygoing.

Pathologists are known for a deadly sense of humor. With proctologists, you will laugh your asss off. Cardiologists are also very light-hearted. Radiologists are a little less funny because they can see right through the B.S. most of the time. Dermatologists do crack a lot of jokes, but have been known to get under your skin after awhile.

Nice.

And I don't understand why everyone here thinks urologists are funny, I've always thought they were real ball-busters.

Very clever...

There really are definative funny specialties. I have known hysterical people in each field and some unfunny in each field.
