What is the importance of white coat ceremony before med school starts? does it hold the same importance as say.. college graduation? like where all the friends and parents attend? just wondering since my parents might be busy then and i dunno if I should tell them to make sure to come or not if it doesn't really matter. Thanks!

most schools have it but some don't. Essentially this is a ceremony in which you're "inducted" into the medical club and it'll be the first time you'll get to wear your white coat. You should at least let your parents know and let them decide what's important or not, especially after all the support and money they've put into you to get you this far. This ceremony isn't just for you but for your parents and everyone else that's supported you along this journey.

Agreed. It lets everyone celebrate that you are going to be a doctor. And the administration usually uses the event as an opportunity to hit parents up for dontations, so they are definitely invited.

i remember the celebrations/ceremony at my sister's white coat ceremony. it's a rite of passage. and in the words of biden, it's "a big f*ing deal."

your mom will get teary eyed, and your dad will be bursting with pride. lots of photographs will be taken.

invite the fam. 👍

My white coat ceremony does have meaning since FSUCOM start class early June 1. So our white coat ceremony (august 20) is the last day of summer classes 😀😀😀.

I agree that early whitecoat ceremony definitely has no meaning.

It has meaning to me! I mentioned once on here that I had a horrible time with lyme disease and misdiagnosis and ultimately having to bail on my admission last year. So I sort of see it as me moving on with my life and returning to the path on which I was traveling before I was forced off!

So HA!

Every one at my hospital wears one, I'm skipping, white coats don't mean jack anymore

I agree, its total BS. What they should do is combine this crap with all the pharmacy students, NP students, PA students, physical therapy students, and dental students who all have their very own "white coat" ceremony now.

Wow, dont we all feel special! Everybody in the entire health sciences campus gets to feel special wearing their very own white coat?

I think they should discontinue this at the Caribbean schools (especially Ross), considering how many people drop out in term 1.

Wow you guys are so negative...

I think another thing is you get to take the Hippocratic Oath.

If you don't want to go then don't got but it has a lot of meaning for a lot of people (hence why most people go with their families).

Sure a lot of people in hospitals have white coats but how many of them say "name, MD" on them? Not that many.

Getting into medical school can be a long journey for some so it is a good way to mark the achievement of starting something new.

Yeah I dont get why people like to talk **** about the white coat ceremony. If you dont want to dont go. It isnt about the white coat, its about the symbolism.

It's a booster, you've gone through a lot of schooling and you're about to go through a whole lot more. It's an early "taste" to keep you from becoming totally overwhelmed and to keep your goal in focus.

Do it.

NYCOM's white coat ceremony isn't held until the end of 2nd year - I think it has more meaning that way. Sort of celebrating all that hellish work you've been put through during MS1 and MS2 and you're about to move on to the clinical portion of your medical education, hence why you're receiving a fancy personalized white coat.

That's actually a pretty cool idea. Unfortunately, during our 1st and 2nd years we're expected to wear our white coats when going into the hospital to interview patients or whenever we meet our "assigned" doctors to shadow. That being said, what do you NYCOM students wear when you go to the hospital during your first and second years?

do dental, pharm etc get white coats with their names stitched on? It is definitely starting to lose meaning cause everyone does it now a days, it's def good for family and friends though

We start in late July and our ceremony will be in early october. Honestly, I'm happy its happening cause my parents didn't get to go to my older brother's and I will have missed them a lot by then so I'll be very happy to see them and take a break from studying.

thanks for the inputs guys, i personally think its a big deal and was looking forward to it, just didnt know the general perception of it. I'll be making sure to tell my parents to join me. thanks!

UF does it it the same way. It's sort of like passing into the second part of medical "initiation."
