faaaackk... just got accepted to michigan... back to the drawing board on decisions 🙄 i've always wanted to go to michigan because of the location and proximity to my home, and cause it is rediculously inexpensive for residents. but seriously i think case has much more to offer program wise. ugghhhh!! 😕 😕 😕
Oh Sh$t. 😀

Take you time on this one...

I turned down an inexpensive school, and weighed my decision on where I will get the better education and training (in my opinion).

You got scholarship at CASE... if you turn it down, It will be a race between me and DDS2BE to get it.

Good Luck... and let us know where you want to attend.

Got a quick question, is the tuition for all 4 years 40,285? Or does it go down since we will be in clinic the last 2 years? I know for state school is decreases for 3rd and 4th years. Thanks.

tuition is fixed for all four years, however the instrument cost decreases along with books/supplies cost.

Your turn... How about you? - why did you turn down OSU interview? 😀

I think it is a tough decision to make if the price difference is over 100k. Believe it or not, I got very disappointed when I got invited for OSU interview 😳 as I was afraid I would have to make my choice again and if I would have gotten accepted to OSU, my life would have been more miserable  to choose between the school I always wanted to attend and the price 😱

There is a lot of people on SDN, mostly d3-d4 students, saying that it does not matter, as long as the price is low... blah blah blah... but I want to attend a school that I feel comfortable about and the money aspect shouldn't even be in consideration... since it's just the money... I solely believe Case has a way better clinical experience to offer than OSU and stands above OSU in a technological prospective. On a top of everything else, my grandfather’s cousin was a well respected teaching professor at Case dental school (he passed away in 1997) and I would love to follow his steps.

That must be a tough one... as Mo said, take your time and listen to yourself.

Case students... do you learn 3rd molar extraction during the pre-doctoral program?

whats up. i have a bro who is currently goin to MI dental school and as yu know im currently goin to Case dental school. so i know all the details on both schools. if yu need any help, feel free to contact me. just remember..every dental school has their pros and cons.

im a first yr, so im not really sure if yu learn 3rd molar extractions. the best advice i can give to yu is that if yu really want to learn how to perform that procedure, observe a dentist. yu honestly can learn ALOT thru a dentist who is willing to teach yu & have one on one contact with him/her.

I don't think they teach it in class...however, I am not sure which year you will start doing rotations (working in other specialty departments) and when you get to OMS department, you will be doing a lot of 3rd Molars extraction....so basically, you will be learning on the spot, of course there will be residents there to help you through.

Do you know if your loan money takes into account money for cost of living or do you need to get another loan for living expenses? As for student health insurance, which doctors can you see? The ones at University Hospital or Cleveland Clinic?

is the financial aid site (briefCase) crashed? - I can't get through...

I have it as: http://finaid.cwru.edu/rd.aspx?abc

same problem here... 😡 My friend, who's working at Case IT department, said the site should be up and running by Monday.

Also, there is a free clinic just couple blocks away. Case students (D3 and D4) could volunteer there in the afternoon with tons of teeth extraction cases.

Up to $14,000/yr for living expenses. Did you get your finiancial package duing orientation ? All of the info are in there.

oh yeah, i think i heard about that from some students dring my interview. thanks for the input. also, how much molar endo do you learn during your endo rotation?

Yes, I got that packet but I did not know that the worksheet with the projected 2004-2005 numbers are what you could get in loans from FAFSA alone and not supplemented by other loans that you might need to take out. I just thought was a projection of an estimate of what you will be spending and that you will need to get from both student loans (fafsa) and private loans to cover. But thanks for the clarification.

What would those of you at Case consider the hardest class to be in your first year?

Just out of curiosity; what's included in the DS1 kit? For roughly 10k there should be a bunch of goodies to play with 🙂

There are about 350 places of stuff in the kit. The big ones are the curing light, high and low speeds, perio instruments, typodonts, burs, impression trays, instrument cassettes, flame torch, burner, waxing materials, etc....

So far, I think it would be Gross Anatomy just because of all the materials you need to learn in just 1/2 yr.

As for the most boring and useless class, it would be Critical Thinking...why it is boring, well, I will let you guys sample it first hand next year and you will know!

Neurobiology and Critical Thinking. 👎 👎 👎

I hope they would include the portable X-rays machine. kekeke add another $6500. 😍 😍 😍

I recieved my ID and password today so that I could go online and file my application for financial aid through the briefCase system. One section of the online form asks for the number of credits/units that I will be taking for each semester in the 2005/2006 school year. Anyone know what the credit/unit breakdown is for each semester?

Thanks

Hey Eric, so have you decided if you are coming to Case next year?

Case financial office is concerned that you are enrolled full-time. I put 27 credits for each semester and then asked Barbara this question, she said the same thing. Btw, she mentioned 2005 curriculum being revised for DS1. So, it may not be the same as curriculum for last year.

When did you get your pins for financial aid. I have not gotten mine yet.
Should I call them or wait a few more days?

Mine came last Friday dated February 24, 2005. Keep in mind that I am local. It should take longer to reach your mailbox. I would give it a few more days and then call.

To those who live in Cleveland now, i am curious to know which apartment complexes that most people live at and are happy there in Cleveland. Thanks.

Yes, they are trying to integrate different subjects into groups instead of having discrete subjects. This movement is logical because when you have a patient, you want to analyze and combine different aspects of science together (ie: how micbiology related issues are effect the anatomy of the patient or their metabolism at the biochemical level). Right now, they believe, having discrete courses giving students some difficulty in diagnosing patients using all levels of science and they believe the new curriculum will aid students in developing this mentality.

Most dental students are populated in 3 main apartments that are within 10 min walking distance to the school. They are: The Triangle, The Fayne, and Waldorf Apt. Other students choose to live in 'apartment style' houses within Little Italy. Another place with high dental students is the Delta Sigma Delta Dental Fraternity house, which I am and will continue to reside in for the next year.

May I ask why you chose to say at Delta Fraternity? What is the cost? Any more rooms avail this fall?

Thanks

No, still undecided. I hope to know within the next week or so as I"m waiting to hear from one more school. They said they should have the next round of acceptances out this week so I will be deciding sometime soon.

How has school been treating you so far? I hope all is well for ya, talk to you soon.

Firstly the rent is very cheap, just $253/month all inclusive. It is also a close walk to the school (just 10 min walk). As well, you will be living with fellow dental students and classmates who will help you out if you need assistance. Last thing is, the parties are always at the house so you don't have to walk in the cold anywhere!

Yes, there will be rooms available for next year, if you are interested, just contact the house manager for a visit and then decide! It is first come first serve for the rooms!

The second term is way better than the first, probably because I am finally getting patients for perio in the clinic. Live clinical experiences are way better than getting stuck in the lecture room all day!

There are more dental related clinical involvement in the second term which is good as well as more free time! Otherwise, the school year is flying by as usual.

Hope you will get in the school of your choice! I will talk to you later!

Do you need a laptop or a desk top is just fine for school?

Are you saying there is enough time to party?! 😱 then what kind of parties are there? A chess tournament type party or a “girls-gone-wild” type 🙂

FUTDR said:

You will have to ask Phil Aftoora about that. So far, the school have not made laptop a mandatory item, however, it might change this year.

For all those who might be wondering if the school will make you purchase a laptop if you already have one (if they do ask you to buy one), if your current laptop is capable of running current softwares then you will not have to purchase another one from the school. Usually laptops purchase whithin 2 years will be fine.

There will be time to party...although not much, about once a month. Even if there aren't a lot of time, but when you have finished like a month of exams (usually there will be one in each semester), you will definately find time to party no matter what!

Usually the parties are somewhere in between the stated, as well as how drunk everybody gets. More drunk the people are, more probably that it will shift to the latter type!

hello.

I'm going to case next year but haven't posted here before. hope ya'll don't take it personally.

i can't get this link to work:
http://finaid.cwru.edu/rd.aspx?abc

A couple days ago i saw others were having a problem with this link, but then it seemed like it started working again. but it hasn't for me. Is anyone else still unable to apply for financial aid?

Perhaps a more important question: is anyone else sick 😴 of second semester physics?

Yea, I know what you mean. And besides, it seems like everything in the second semester is just made up anyway.

I'm having problems changing my briefCASE password. I've tried all sorts of diferent alpha-numeric combinations but nothing seems to work and thats all the system keeps telling me, "must use alpha-numeric combinations," has anyone else had this problem? Are thier more parameters they're not giving me?

I just talked to couple of seniors today. One had 2 molars during her endo rotation, 5 premolars and few anteriors. Other got luckier, she had 3 molars (one was very bad case), few premolars and anteriors. For the requirement to graduate, they have to do at least 2 endo competencies (any type) on live patients.

thanks for checking that link dds2be. saved me a phone call. turns out there was some funky security setting in the chemistry computer lab. the page works in the biology building, not in the chemistry. stupid chemists.

You should be discharged from Delta Sigma Delta fraternity for saying that! <j/K>

Besides, all work and no play makes a dental student insane! 😀
