I think NDT is a little overrated. People need to avoid the hero worship of science figures (Gawande, NDT, Farmer, Dawkins) just like the rest of the public should avoid worshiping other celebrities.

You'll often find just as well reasoned, if not better, thoughts and articulations from a professor at any top University as you'll find in these people. They distinguish themselves in their ability to make their articulations intelligible to the general public, but as well-trained/well-educated individuals, we need not limit our exposure to just that group.

I guess I'm just saying, don't get too caught up with these kinds of individuals. Sure we all cry foul when NDT makes these statements about doctors and medicine because we know better. But how many other topics does he speak on that we know nothing about?

More on topic, most doctors aren't scientists. Just like nurses aren't scientists, nor dentists, nor vets. However, many doctors are. If we were to compare the MD/PhD guys and gals to scientists in other fields, I'm pretty confident they could handle their own with any of them. Oh right, I say this as a physics major 👍

Also, citing a quote from big bang theory (mega-paraphrasing): doctors are tradespeople, physicists are scientists.

ideally a doctor should be a scientist as well.

haha i love this question, i'm a physics majors, looking to Med school.

i knew two others physics majors who graduated before me; one is doing his residency in radiology, the other in dermatology. LOL

An average tenured/tenure-track PhD research professor at a top 50 medical school is smarter than your average dermatologist. The dermatologist is probably better at regurgitating information though, although that's still very useful.

And there's a reason it's easier to transition from physics to biology than vice versa.
