performing a surgical procedure (drainage) in an unauthorized treatment unsupervised on a colleague who had a toe abscess bad?

sample from patho came back and it's some strange fungus they've never seen before....

hmm....

I am aware this was a poor decision on my part, but the pathologist said that if didn't get drained when it did, it could've cost my colleague her toe....

so I made the decision to drain it unsupervised and unauthorized based on the knowledge I had at the time and in the best interest of my colleague. whom was my patient at the time.

could it have risked my medical education/career, yes. But I don't regret doing it.

I am just very thankful everything turned out alright.

...but if nothing happens should I count this as one of my 3 lucky strikes I will get in med school?

The alternative being what, to go tell the dean your rather amusing story? Your actions were dumb, but that'd be dumber. Be glad everything turned out OK and don't do it again.

I asked one of the nurses who should we get to fill out the patho request form, and she's like oh just forge it, so we forged it, and sent off some random sample to pathology. however, my colleagues MRN number is on the form......

What were you thinking?

If you forge a signature, and you get caught, your medical career is over.

If your colleague had a bad outcome from an unsupervised procedure, putting your med school at (perceived) liability risk, your medical career is over.

Consider this a learning experience. Obviously, you are questioning your decisions in retrospect. In the future, I think you'll play by the rules.

My thoughts are that this story needs to be 80% more explosion-y and that you left out the part where you and the 2 nurses had a threesome in the CT scanner.

Yeah, that was pretty dumb. First of all, one of the reasons a lot of schools prefer students to do volunteering and stuff in the states is BECAUSE THEY DON"T WANT YOU DOING 20 OF THOSE IN AFRICA! You weren't qualified there, and you weren't qualified in to do it on your friends. Frankly, the fact that you did it proves the point of not wanting students doing stuff like that. You got a big head, figured you could do it no prob. And you did, but you aren't a licensed doctor and you have no right to do such a thing. I know how to suture, but that doesn't give me the right to go around doing it for people. The whole reason we have accredidation is to prevent quack doctors and less than qualified practicioners. You violated that. Just because you got it right doesn't mean you would always get it right, and it definitely doesn't mean other people will get it right.

As you already know, that was really stupid. Are you sure those interns didn't report you? I'd be crapping a brick right about now.

Why do people continuously fall for these types of posts?

what does this mean exactly?

fall for what?

it's not a **** disturbing post. I was actually wondering if what I did was necessarily a bad thing.

apparently it was. But. sometimes that are "bad" end up with good outcomes.

Thanks for sharing your opinions guys!

Dude, chill out. I've sutured friends without insurance up several times. It's highly probable I've got more recent experience suturing than whatever low man on the totem-pole it would have been delegated to at the ED anyway. "Rights" don't really come into it.

Granted, it would be stupid to go around I&Ding things that needed cultured, but it's really the forging part that was the serious offense. If it was true.

Why did you name the thread "whoopsy!!!!!! lol" ?

Throw in a knife fight and/or helicopter crash and you've got the show ER
