Where are all the KCOM acceptees?

Personally, I'm vacillating between KCUMB and KCOM. KCUMB is a great school and in a large city. KCOM is a great school as well, but not in the greatest location, size and convenience-wise.

You Current and Future KCOM'ers - Why should I attend KCOM? What does it have to offer?

KCOM

I was kind of wondering about this myself. It seems to kind to depend on the year, and KCOM isn't seeing much love on SDN right now.
I have been accepted, but I still need to interview at DMU and AZCOM and hear back from my state school and CCOM before I decide for sure.
I liked KCOM, and I think that they churn out great doctors! The staff seems so nice. I wasn't in love with the town, but I realize that it is only for a couple of years.

For those that have interviewed at KCOM, what are your thoughts on the school, and where does it stand among your favorites?

I plan to chat about them plenty once I get back from my interview in a couple weeks. I have had nothing but positive experiences in speaking with them and my research thus far has been very positive.

That's what makes this difficult...each school has it's own niche that makes it great!

I agree. Every school seems to be great and offers a whole lot.

I just don't know why KCOM is not discussed on here more often.

MJB, I see that you have been accepted to KCUMB as well, is that right? Is that your #1 right now?

If I've been accepted to KCUMB, that's news to me! HA!

Last I knew, I was on hold for an interview with them. 🙂

I have, however, spent a lot of time and energy trying to get into KCUMB.

If you want some opinions of students from KCUMB, I can help you there, as I have a friend that is a 3rd Year KCUMB student.

I met one KCOM rep last spring, but then he moved on this summer, so I haven't met any of them in person. Needless to say, I'm quite excited to get up there and meet everyone and check the place out.

Not trying to put the cart before the horse here, but does anyone know how long you have to make the deposit if you are accepted to KCOM, and how much the deposit is?

I am glad you started this thread because I have been thinking the same thing- there is not much said about KCOM on SDN and I am seriously considering this school. I loved the atmosphere when I was there. I stayed with a student and was there two days before my interview so I had time to explore. I am currently deciding between Touro-MI, KCOM and AZCOM. In my gut I know KCOM is the best school for me but I am from California and want to do a little more research into AZCOM. KCOM is not the easiest place to get to ; ) Overall, I think the students and staff are great, the community is very supportive, the school has very well-established rotations (which is important to me), and they really offer a nuturing enviornment.

Cali, What are your thoughts on Kirksville as a town that you can spend 2 years in?

I was accepted before 11/15, so I am required to pay $1000 by Dec. 14th and another $1000 before March 15th or so. I believe it is the same for KCUMB.

I apologize for the misunderstanding.

Is your 3rd year friend liking KCUMB? Where is he doing his rotations? Do you mind if I ask him a few questions?

wow, I'm pretty much in the same boat as you.
I am accepted at KCOM and just had my interview at AZCOM.
I like AZCOM since the campus is nice, it's in the city, passing rate for boards is amazing, and I am from AZ.
I interview Touro MI and NV the first week of December.
KOCM has an amazing history, a great curriculum, great reputation, and as you mention, rotations pretty much wherever you want to go in the country.
The staff and community seem nice, it's just hours away from any city.

Gotta think about it more I guess.
GOOD LUCK with your decisions!

Hey guys,

I applied to KCOM last cycle, accepted, and deferred to the class of 2011. I have already talked privately with MJD, but I thought I'd share my thoughts with the rest of you.

First of all, working with the admissions department was actually a pleasure for a change, unlike many schools where it can be like pulling teeth. Everyone that I met or spoke too was very polite, caring and helpful. I am non-trad. with a military background and they went out of their way to make the whole process comfortable for me. I believe that this is directly related to the environment of the entire school. On top of that, the interview day was well organized and relaxes, and at times I felt as though the school was selling itself to me and not the other way around. I know several former and current students, and everything I have heard from them confirms the impression that I got- KCOM really nurtures its students and cares about their growth not only as doctors but as well-rounded people.

As for my impressions of the school. Initially I wasn't overly impressed with the facilities as I found the labs to look well outdated and the OMT room to be quite cramped. However, the lecture rooms, group study rooms, and patient simulation rooms were up to date and conveniently located. In the end, I thought about it and a lab is a lab to me for the most part. It doesn't matter where you do your disections as long as you have knowledgable instructors. The good news to me (and perhaps some of you) is an impressive addition that should be ready for the 2007 entering class by winter at the latest. If you haven't already check out the KCOM website for floorplans and a webcam that shows the progress. It will house an updated library with a computer lab, a large new OMT room, 6 patient simulators, and several group study rooms and lounge areas. If you can't tell I am pretty excited about it.

Having grown up in Northeast Missouri I am used to the area ans small-town life. I have also spent the last 7 years living an hour away from NYC and in Germany. I was not sure at first how easy it would be to settle back into that atmosphere. As Cali2006 mentioned the students seem to be very tight knit and the community is very supportive. While the community is small the school provdies multiple opportunities for fitness classes, intramurals, and other organizational activities. From students I've talked to everyone comes together to find things to do in the free time that you do have. There is plenty to do in Columbia (1.5 hour drive) and St. Louis (Go Cards!) and Kansas City as well if you are willing to drive a little longer.

Besides having family close by, it was KCOM's rotations that won me over. They are well-established, seem to have great oversight, and are available in a variety of locations. The match process works out so that 90-95% get their first choice and virtually everyone gets one of their top 2. It was a big plus in my book not to have to worry about setting up rotations and contacting physicians on your own.

Deposits- It may have changed since last year, but I was accepted around 20Dec and was required to pay $1000 by ~15 Jan, another $500 by ~March 15, and the final $500 by ~APR 15 if my memory serves me correctly.

Well now that I've written my novella on reasons why I chose KCOM feel free to contact me with any questions you have about my application experience or the area in general and I'll do my best.

Packamylase- Thank God for context. I learned a new word today. At risk of insulting my own intelligence I have to say that I'm not sure I could vacillate even if I did know what it meant. 😉

Just a heads up. If you are looking for current students to reply right now, you probably aren't gonna find many (i'm taking a 5 minute break haha) because we are right in the thick of finals. But if you do a search on here there are very helpful replies. If you look at my posts, I have said some good things about KCOM a few times on here now. Otherwise feel free to PM me, but like i said it will probably be next week that i reply. Short answer: KCOM is awesome and Kirksville definitely grows on you, i love living here.

Hey Packamylase I was accepted to both KCUMB and KCOM, and yeah deposits are done by Dec. 14, and another done in March.
I still have one more interview on Friday and want to check the school out, but it won't be easy to decide on one school. At least we have options.

When you have a little time, would you expound further on what you like and DON'T like about KCOM. I appreciate your opinion. (I've read your posts on other threads as well.)

Also, what is the possibility that we get involved with one of the OMM efficacy studies that are going on there? For example, with Dr. Noll or with Dr. Degenhardt. That seems really fascinating to me.

Yes, hours and hours (and one more hours for most!)
And I remembering wrong? When I interviewed and they showed us a map of their rotations sites they were mostly clustered in the upper-midwest region with the expection of AZ. I would like to know if this is not correct, b/c this was a slight negative for me.

As a KCOM student I have noticed how underrepresented we are on SDN. I want you all to know that that has no reflection on our school at all, at least not negatively (I think most would consider it a positive). We are KCOM. We are the first osteopathic school and the forefront of osteopathic medicine. We don't have to defend ourselves, we have the facilities, the faculty, the resources and the reputation. Ask any practicing osteopath which medical students they feel comfortable practicing OMM in their offices on rotations and we will be at the top of their lists. Sure there may be problems with our school, but there always are with any and there is always change going on to try and fix them. Another reason you don't see as many current students on SDN is because KCOM has a very good network of student communication internally within the school with its own forums, email lists, and websites that all of the students use. Anyone who is accepted to the school will eventually be given access to it and it is there that they post questions and there are extensive threads about what to expect at KCOM and medical school life in general.

P.S. For the poster wanting to know about Dr. Noll, he sent out a general email just a week ago looking for student researchers on a project of his, so yes the opportunities are there. Also remember that the most outspoken people are always the disgruntled ones, the ones happy and content are the ones who usually keep their peace so let the fact that you don't see as many SDN posters from KCOM speak for itself (we have to study you know).

Thanks, Hopper.

Another Question: Is there a Chinese restaurant in K-Patch? A place that I can eat some Sesame Chicken with White/Fried Rice? This is important, you know! 😉

Yes, hours and hours (and one more hours for most!)

YES_I_DO, The regions are in the following places:

Arizona (Phoenix Area)
Utah (Salt Lake and Provo)
Colorado (Denver area)
Missouri (NE MO and St. Louis, Jefferson City)
Ohio (Select cities)
Michigan (Detroit area and other hospitals, including Genesys, Metropolitan)
Penn/NJ (Newark, NJ and York, PA, etc.)
Florida (Largo - Suncoast Hosp.)

I spoke with a 4th year and he says the rotations are great - very well organized and very effective. He did his in Arizona.

This has been a great thread! Thank-you to current students for posting!

And most importantly...a HyVee!

Might sound stupid, but when we first moved to our current place of residence, there was no decent grocery store...and being an amateur chef, it sucked.

I'm a fourth year at KCOM. Feel free to e-mail me if you have specific questions.

Just finished finals--passed everything! I love going to school here. All of my classmates are very supportive. Before every test I my inbox is full of emails from my classmates recommending websites to help study, or notes and outlines that they've typed up. I was accepted to KCUMB and DMU and was very impressed with both schools, but I am very happy with my decision to come to Kirksville.

Yes, Thanks MJB. I'm glad to hear there are a couple Chinese restaurants.

I won't lie - King's Buffet was pretty much a staple there and there is also a fairly decent restaurant within walking distance from the campus (China Palace). To be truthful, Kirksville really isn't such an awful place to go to school. I went to undergrad in Champaign, IL and grad school in Washington, DC so heading out to Kirksville was a bit of a change from both those atmospheres. However, outside of an enormous concert venue, Kirksville has pretty much everything you need to stay occupied. I saw that you wanted some cons so, I guess I'll share what I wish we had in the 'Ville when I was there.
1. As stated above, a bigger music venue in town would have been nice. Granted, Columbia is just over an hour away and there are huge venues there but it is a little harder to justify driving down there to see a great band when you have to take a test the next morning. Every once and a while, Truman State has a good show like Cake or Guster.
2. No lie, it is a small town. Some people are really freaked out with the near-rural environment. I will say, however, that after a couple months it really starts growing on you. If not, I know a couple of people that would drive down to Columbia once or twice a week to study.
3. If you hate OMM, don't go to Kirksville. There were a couple people in our class that weren't really all that excited about OMM and they pretty much suffered through the two-hour labs and nearly daily lectures. If you love OMM, however, I think it will be a great time to be in Kirksville. The OMM fellows for next year are really great (they are from the Class of 2008) and as best I understand, the new technology center is/will be open and there is a huge OMM lab there.
4. Choosing rotations is kind of a crapshoot. There is a match process in place, but it is pretty much random. About 80% get their first choice and 10% get their second. The rest pretty much get one of their other choices and rarely does somebody not match. The plus side to this is that in the past, there has been some wiggle room and they work really hard to get people who did not match or matched their 4th, 5th, 6th choice into one of their higher matches. And as a little plug here, the rotations have been awesome. I haven't heard anyone complain yet from any of the sites. I'm out in Arizona (which is mostly preceptor-based) and have had some really excellent rotations thus far.

I think that's pretty much it. Truthfully, being in Kirksville is what you make of it. There are things to do and if nothing else, and plenty of people there that will more than likely go hiking, biking, golfing, running, or drinking with you. I went to Kirksville because it is a relatively laid-back atmosphere, the admissions committee and students were awesome on my visit, and the reputation of the school with the MD and DO physicians I worked with. The education was great and I certainly am reaping the benefits now that I am on rotations. Hope this helps.

Where are all the KCOM acceptances? 🙂 I'll be attending this coming Fall, wahoo!

Really enjoyed my experience up there. What a great group of people and great school! It was truly an enjoyable day. I can't wait to hear back!

Awesome, MJB!
