hi, i'm a 3rd yr in osteopathic med school. I have been considering going into em though i haven't done the rotation yet so i'm not sure. anyway, i am worried about not matching if i do decide to go for it. I have not take usmle step I. My comlex I score wasn't stellar but I safely passed. should i take the usmle I ? Do scores really factor in to if you'll match? How competitive is em now. I want to stay in the ny/nj area so i only plan on applying to programs there. There are only about 5 or 6 osteopathic em programs in ny and nj so I assume i have the best shot at those.
i prolly would apply to most if not all of the allopathic em programs in ny and nj. Is this a realistic goal ?

I hear pretty good things about the EM program at St. Barnabas in the Bronx. Almost every DO student interested in EM I know rotates through there. I believe the PD is a graduate of NYCOM. There is a DO PGY-2 in the Camden program at Cooper hospital in NJ. So they're friendly to DO's too. EM is pretty competitive now, (forgive me for sounding corny) but they look at the whole package and not just the numbers so don't worry. Do well in your EM rotation, get good letters and continue working hard throughout third year, and take leadership positions either in your school or the community.

Good luck!

look at Maricopa County in Phoenix...program director is a DO.
