How important are stats? I have about a 3.75 and a 30Q and some volunteer experience but my writing skills aren't great...will these stats get me interviews despite a mediocre personal statement and secondary? thanks a lot.

Jeff

It depends on what school you are applying to. Those stats won't get you an interview at any top ten school without a brilliant personal statement and even then it will be difficult to achieve. If you are applying to your state school or a school at the bottom of the rankings then MAYBE your stats and volunteer experiences might get you an interview. Remember stats aren't everything. They just crack open the door a little.

Stats CAN mean ALOT. You can have a brilliant personal statement and extra curriculars that would wow the socks of Mother Teresa and the such, but if your grades are poor and your MCAT mediocre to average you are going to be fighting an uphill battle to get an interview and acceptance to medical school.

I do realize there are people with 4.0/38S who don't get acceptances but there battle will be an easier one.

Do these 40/3.8 no-acceptance people really exist? I'm thinking it's just some ficticious example people use to help make mediocre stats seem a little less intimidating.

Yes, stats Can MEAN alot, but a 3.75 GPA and a 30 MCAT aren't super stellar. You might need more than that to get an interview at many schools.

I think that you are being too negative on these stats

A few questions for the original poster:
How well-ranked is your undergrad institution?

What med schools are you looking at to give you interviews?

Why is your statement mediocre? There is no excuse for that. Don't you have friends/professors that could look it over for you? This is your chance to make up for the average MCAT

I agree whole-heartedly. There have probably been a FEW--meaning half a dozen over the past few years--who came off as total snots in their interviews and messed it all up.

But, to the original question, I imagine that a mediocre personal statement looks WORSE than a lousy GPA because an essay is more readily interpreted than is a GPA. A lousy semester or two can be explained away. The inability to verbalize your motivations and experiences is pretty much inexcusable.

what is wrong with a 30Q and a 3.75? They seem pretty competative to me.

some pple seem to forget, 30 is "average" for MATRICULATING students, not applicants.

jeffsimz,

I think your stats will definitely get you interviews, assuming you applied to a wide range of schools. Your GPA is above average and MCAT score is right at the average, so you're good as far as stats go.

the superstar stat people my year at Yale got interviews everywhere- the cool kids with top grades got in everywhere, the weird nerds got into about half- which surprised me since they had over 40s on their MCATS and 3.9s....

I had very average grades and MCats, and no matter what my personal statement said I was auto rejected (no interview) from all the top 10 schools except for Yale which ultimately accepted me.

So I have concluded that in the end, your stats get you the interview, and the interview and your committment to attend the school even more than the personal statement gets you in.

good luck, your stats are fine. Apply to lots of middle range schools and I am sure you will do great.

Wexy is right on. #'s get you the interviews. I sometimes wonder if the PS is even read before you have an interview date. Be personable, likeable and interested in the school you are interviewing at.

In TX, I believe the matriculating averages are 29.5 and 3.65 which is on par with the national averages. Good luck. Your stats are fine.

thanks for your replies...I am by no means aiming for top 10 schools..frankly, I'll go wherever I can get in...I had many friends look over my PS but I have a feeling it's not great.....I applied to many private schools and those that accept high numbers of out of state people......thanks again for the replies

Jeff

I completely agree with what Wexy said. I talked with an representative from UMich's Admissions Office when I was applying, and she said that there are "auto-interview numbers" (get these numbers and you get an interview) and that mine were below their out-of-state ones, so mine would have to pass through the committee. I had a 3.65 and a 34.

i think that the woman at umich just wanted to go on coffee break a little earlier this time.

to get an interview at decent schools, numbers are only part of the deal. then even after the interview, even if the interview was amazing...its subjective who they let in. trust me this is inside info. take it or leave it.

3.75 is stellar.

stellar??? wtf...are we surfers now? A 3.75 is bootylicious.

I think your stats are definitely competitive enough to get you some interviews.

yeah, so each situation is different and "average" scores can be off-set to SOME extent by ECs and other aspects of the app. I got 6 interviews (two of my state schools, one NY state school, and three private schools) and one acceptance with a 3.4 cummulative and 3.2-ish BCMP and 27O MCAT....of course I am a non-trad with a MS-micro.
So, OP, your stats probably get you in the door at quite a few schools, and as with all other applicants, the other elements of your app will help to seal the deal.
Best of Luck!!!
Spin😀 😀
