William Carey Had Only 88 Matches, What Happened?

No lol 4 year graduation average at USMD is 85-88%, 5 year is 97%
Your forgetting that most md programs have a certain amount of md PHDs that extend. Most DO schools don’t have this. There’s no doubt we fail more.

The 80-85% 4 year rate does not include dual degree programs.

I can't find a 4 year graduation rate for DO schools. But the attrition rate was an average of 3.03% from 2009-2019 for all COMs.

I'm curious as to what effect covid has to those numbers, because our school's attrition rate for 2024 was like 10%, way higher than it normally is

I am curious about this as well, but I do not think we will have any data on this until 2024 and later.

So check this. I graduated WCU in 2018. I’m quoting/copying a post I made in May 2018. That post is easily searchable on sdn. Less than half of my entering class matched. They may have SOAP’d or scrambled, but they didn’t match. Of the ~115 ppl that sat in seats on day one only 55 ppl “matched” either the NRMP *or* the AOA.

Placement =\= match

I bring this up because in another thread it was estimated that of WCU's initial class of around 120, 24 were picked off along the way and 14 didn't get match, a 68% success rate of becoming a practicing physician. This to me is totally unacceptable and borderline caribbean odds.

As a 4th year student at William Carey, I can confirm that those numbers are roughly correct. If any fellow classmates or admin are around here and want to correct my numbers, please do so.

First year, day 1, there were roughly 115 students in the classroom. I don’t remember how many of those were previous repeats, but there were about 115 bodies in seats.

The number of students to actually submit a rank list was in the upper 80s. Of those, I think only 55 actually “matched” in either the AOA *or* the NRMP. The rest either scrambled or SOAPed. We had mamy students scramble into spots after the AOA match but before the NRMP. I think we had 14 SOAP after the AOA scramble and the NRMP match, but I could be slightly off.
So 55/115 students actually straight up “matched

End of quote ————————

per the website: match rate 97% 👀🤷

And for the record, I graduated from William Carey, made it into emergency medicine residency, completed it, and got a fantastic job. So I’m very fortunate and have no reason to make stuff up, but the reported match statistics are blatantly false.

Damn, what was the biggest factor you think contributing to this? Weak cohort? Poor advising?

Didn't they also have that bad storm/tornado that messed up their facilities? I can't remember if that was in 2017 or 2018 was also significantly affected. Not sure if that also played a role.

It’s a pretty well known fact that DO schools don’t report match rate they report placement rate. Our dean confirmed that this year the true match rate was 90% and placement was 98

It was in end/middle of 2018 if my memory serves me right, but that wouldn’t have effected that class they would have graduated/matched already.
