I seriously need help on this. I want to do small animal medicine try out some equine work. Additionally I like both of their MPH programs and wouldn't mind getting into a research lab during school. I am IS VA but Madison's tuition is not too high for me so its not really a problem. Overall I think I felt more comfortable at tech but Madison seems to have a bit more to offer in terms of research and their cool cow herd. Does anyone know of research opps at tech, I didnt really get that impression. And is the equine program all right even though their center is so far away. Any comments are much appreciated!

Have you visited UW? (Did they have the open house under our noses and none of us noticed?) I'm OOS as UW and would not have tried to make that decision until I had physically been at the schools I was considering.

Open house is April 1st.

VMRCVM's open house is on April 2nd. I don't have anything else to add except that I'm also really interested in this comparison. Are they completely different "types" of schools?

I'm not sure how long wisc's MPH program has been goin, but vmrcvm's just started this year. So that may be something to ask about, see how it is going. Usually during start ups there is a lot of improvement needed. I have no clue about wisconsins MPH program.

My fav part about wisc in terms of research is they have a primate facility

Ive visited both, I couldnt make the open house at Wisc so i went to see it. I like them both, but i felt more at home at tech. I was a bit more impressed with Wisc facilities though.

Virginia Tech offers a lot of research opportunities for students, especially over the summer. The school partners with NIH and Merial to sponsor the summer research program, which matches students with faculty researchers. Many of the students in my class are taking advantage of these excellent opportunities this summer--their proposals range from cancer to sports medicine therapy to microbiology and genetics. I also believe that one of the final poster presentations is at Disney World this summer, which is definitely a plus haha.

You can find more information about the program here: http://www.vetmed.vt.edu/research/svsrp/index.asp

In addition, over the past few months we have received a number of offers to work with faculty on their own research projects.

As for the equine opportunities, I am an equine tracker and I have found that the curriculum lends itself well to equine medicine. There are always interesting equine cases in the hospital and the AAEP chapter at VMRCVM holds weekly lunchtime rounds which are led by a clinician or senior student and cover the cases in the hospital. I personally don't believe that having the EMC 4 hrs away is a hindrence to the program because of the variety and complexity of the procedures done in the hospital on campus. If you want more info, feel free to PM me, but I have been 100% happy.

Hope this helps!!

Just wanted to post some info about the NIH-Merial scholarships if you're interested

"
Veterinary students in their first or second year of veterinary school are encouraged to apply. Programs are typically 10 to 12 weeks during the summer and held at veterinary schools throughout the U.S. and Canada. To find out more information and how to apply, follow the link for the particular institution.
Students are eligible to apply to any of the institutions listed with an active Merial Veterinary Scholars Program, regardless of where you are currently enrolled."
