I know this seems a little silly, but does anyone have ideas on good wording for a letter of withdrawal? That is, been accepted, sent in the deposit, but not going there anymore.

Also, do schools generally let you withdraw over email or will I have to snail-mail it in?

Thanks!

Don't worry about it. They won't be offended. I remember when this happened to me I just phoned them first, when I was absolutely sure I was in to the other school I was going to, and told the other school (one I wasn't going to) that I'm going to withdraw. After that, I sent them a letter. You can just make it short and sweet, something to the effect of you really appreciate the opportunity to attend there, but will not be able to accept because you are attending another school.

email it..doesn't really matter what you say (they really don't care) as long as you don't start personally insulting them or cursing. Just sent and email to the dean saying something like 'although I liked your school, I am deciding to withdraw. please give me back my deposit, b1tch!' (maybe not that last part)

edit: just read the post above mine..a phone call and snail mail letter is a waste of everyone's time..there's merit in being polite so as to not burn any bridges (for residency/fellowship), but there's no reason to be overly polite or anything like that..they are definitely NOT going to save your withdraw letter to analyze if you apply there for residency!!!

Agree with dragonfly. The more classically polite, the better.

Dear [whoever],

i am writing with regret to inform you that i will be unable to attend [school]. please let me know if there is any paperwork i need to fill out to make this decision official.

i thank you very much for the opportunity.

yours sincerely,
[you]

that sounds awkward and a little too cold....you aren't even thanking them for accepting you

I just sent emails. One of the schools I actually did like to I said "thank you so much, I really enjoyed it, I was so humbled by the scholarship, etc.... but I will be attending a school closer to home"
The other school id din't really like and just said "I am withdrawing my offer of acceptance. Thank you for the opportunity"

As long as you don't say "F you SUCKA!!!!" I think you are fine.

Thanks everyone. I just sent something polite and to the point. I'm sure the lucky person who gets to read the mail in the admissions inbox really doesn't care...

I sent emails. Just a general "thank you for the opportunity, but I have decided to attend X medical school. I look forward to future coorrespondence with your school for my graduate medical education"

At 2 out of the 3 places I've withdrawn, I've gotten a response saying something to the effect of "Thanks for letting us know, I hope you will consider us for residency"

 After begging to be accepted it feels good to have the shoe on the other foot
