Hi all,

I am just curious as to why there are so few women in cardiology. Also why do they make so much less than men?-- is it because they work part time a lot? Lastly, are women in cardiology judged for being women? Just wondering these things. I know they are dumb questions.

Yes, and "work-life balance" is literally cited as the biggest reason. It has nothing to do with bias or being judged because they are a woman, cardiology has issues recruiting women due to the perception that it is a field with long and unflexible hours, not far off from how surgery is viewed.

“Unless cardiology figures out a way to have more stable hours, more predictable hours, I think we will suffer, and in fact continue to suffer, in not necessarily being able to attract the best talent into the profession and perhaps not retain them,” she added.

My original source for my questions in this post was a Cardiovascular ICU nurse. She is a friend of mine (I do not work in CVICU though). She works with cardiologists. I asked her about what their lives APPEAR to be like and I am asking more questions on this form for clarification.

Thank you for the info. I guess it's relatively obvious that women don't like to, on average, work as many hours as some men do. It would make sense that female cardiologists aren't discriminated against for their gender (I mean it IS 2018). Helpful posts, thanks 🙂

no one mentioned that they thought that there was discriminaton; just that there were few women interested in the field.

I was referring to discrimination.
