Women's Interview Clothing

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I found these shoes, finally, but I will have to get them in the gray fabric. Let me know if this is TOO crazy, but I'd really like to stick with this option if at all possible. They are just so comfy and actually flattering! Here they are. http://www1.macys.com/shop/product/aerosoles-nice-play-pumps?ID=1644227

If you think I should order the wine color instead, let me know!

Those shoes look great to me in either color. (I personally think the wine color would be a wonderful choice, still conservative but just different enough from the many black shoes out there.)

Ok so I think I have my outfit (almost) all set! Even though I am open to suggestion, I'd hope not to change anything, though if anyone here sees anything which is a glaring autoreject, please let me know.

Suit Blazer: http://www.anntaylor.com/petite-all...rExplode=false&catid=cat550044&priceSort=DESC

Suit Skirt: http://www.anntaylor.com/petite-all...rExplode=false&catid=cat550044&priceSort=DESC

Jewelry: (I already had these. I'm not buying them for interviews.) http://www.jcpenney.com/cultured-freshwater-pearl-4-pc-boxed-jewelry-set/prod.jump?ppId=pp5002040071&catId=cat1003050008&N=1003050013&extDim=true&topDim=Categories&topDimvalue=sets&dimCombo=Categories|&dimComboVal=sets|&currentDim=Categories&currentDimVal=sets&N=1003050013&_dyncharset=UTF-8&colorizedImg=0900631B81AF3E8DM.tif

Shoes: Ok so I'm going to preface this. My shoe choice is a little unorthodox. As you can see, my suit is almost black, so it's really hard to find a navy that matches, and black looks weird because they're too similar, so that's out of the question. I've been told that my other options are merlot and cognac, but here's the thing. My feet (and hands actually) are really really bizarrely shaped- partly from dance and partly from genetics. My arches are super high, so any pump with sides too low reveals the top of my arch, which looks weird, and my toes are SUUUUPPPERR long, so for most pumps, the front covered part is too short, and you can see half of my toes, which looks ugly.

So that's it! I still haven't gotten a shell or bag. For the shell, I was thinking cream, beige, buttercup yellow, sky blue, or plum. Any suggestions? And what color bag?

Thanks!

I'm trying to style the same suit/color! It is a tough one. I'm opting for a black shoe because I've never personally had a problem with navy and black together, though I know some people are opposed. The suit is so dark it shouldn't matter. As for your shoes, I think the gray is too light for the "Dark Sky" we're working with, but it could work. I wish the wine color was a tad bit darker but they could look good. Your shell color will have to complement the shoes...cream/beige are agreeable with wine, sky blue and gray would look nice.

EDIT: here's a picture of my shoes, bought on sale a while ago :) http://mrsrmag.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/Ivanka-Indico.jpg

Also, please take note that this advice is coming from someone who wears a lottt of black/dark colors so I'm biased.

Yeah, the problem with me is that I have dark hair and dark eyes, and people tend to say I look "goth" if I wear too much black. Unfair, I know! I'm not goth at all! But I wouldn't want to give that impression to interviewers.

Additionally, you know how some people have "resting bitch face"? I have "resting sad face." Like, if my face is in a neutral expression, people keep asking me what's wrong, so I constantly have to smile. It's exhausting. But I wouldn't want to give an impression of looking somber at my interview! That's why I'm going for a more fun color for my shell and not black for my shoes. I think I will go with sky blue for the shell.

Toootally understand. I've been told my resting face is not at all friendly or welcoming haha. Something I'm definitely trying to work on before interviews!

Skyblue sounds like a good option. I remember some study shows that people tend to trust a person more if they wear light blue or light green shirt.

The young woman angst in this thread over "weird bodies/hands/feet/face" is sad.

It's extremely unlikely that any of you are actually deformed or outside of the range of normal. While I know that for most of you, with age will come self acceptance, the best accessory you can wear to your interview with confidence.

Most of you are likely in your early to mid 20s and blessed with great health. We, as women, should stop picking ourselves and our bodies apart. Leave that to the media and other people who seem to make it their business to comment on what we should look like.

Don't do it to yourself.

When I was in my teens and early 20's, I was always surprised when 'mature' women told me how pretty I was -- because to me, in comparison with my peers, I was actually pretty average-looking. (Give or take ;))

But now that I'm older and wiser, I can see that they were right. It was my youth and good health that radiated beauty -- just as it is now for virtually all of you. Believe it! Because older adults know that a little more-than-ideal here or a little less-than-ideal there is nothing compared to youth and good health.

This weekend I bought a navy suit with a white shell (bought a gray shell too) with either nude or light pink shoes. However, in case it it hot I also bought a dress/sweater combo and I am wondering if this would be appropriate for a medical school interview (links for the outfit below)? I would definitely wear this to a job interview but just wanted to make sure it was appropriate for this as well.

Thank you!

I don't think the dress/sweater is appropriate for a medical school interview at all.
If you are wearing a dress, I was always taught that it has to be the same color/fabric as the blazer you wear it with.

I mean I think a white dress and a white blazer would look a bit much? The same with a black blazer and a black dress?

I am in no way a fashionista so correct me if I am wrong.

Either way I was going to wear it to my mock interview before my committee interview so it won't be an outfit wasted!

I think white on white might be a little bit...shocking, but I think that black on black is acceptable, although I'd go for a sheath dress versus the A-line style you selected.
Black on black still can look harsh though, so navy might be a better bet.
I tried on a lot of dress/jacket combos because I thought I would be more comfortable that way, but could never find something that I liked while still looking appropriate, so I just stuck with a skirt suit after all.

Yeah that is why I ended up getting the basic navy suit but figured I would give the dress combo a try. But it has proved harder to find something that works!

Unfortunately, there's a lot wrong here.

The dress is too short and its not an acceptable to wear a sweater instead of a matching jacket. The shoes are not dressy enough due to the fabric and color. I'd be careful with white; its easily stained during transportation, meals, tours, etc.

I do like the necklace however.

After looking at a user's link above, I thought I'd simplify things appropriate for a medical school interview. We've done it before but it seems to get lost in the body of the thread. Note that the color in each picture may not be correct; this is just about the "style".

Colors for pants/jacket/dress/skirt: solid navy blue, charcoal grey, or black. Lighter grey may be acceptable in the spring or early fall.

No patterns.

Jackets should match the dress or skirt/trousers in color and fabric.

Fabric: wool, wool blend is best. Nothing shiny.

Fit: I should not see the outline of your legs. Skirts/dresses should be knee length or slightly below.

Blouses may be brighter colors; white is often boring. No cleavage. No embellishments. Tucked in. Sleeveless ok if jacket left on.

Earrings: nothing dangly; no religious or political symbols

Other jewelry: wedding/engagement ring ok. No bracelets, "fitbits". Necklace ok if otherwise blends with outfit and neckline.

Shoes: a bit of a heel is best. No patent. Flats if you must but accomplished adults should be able to walk in heels. No embellishments. Should be darker than your outfit. Navy: cordovan/wine colored; brown, second place, black distant third. Black: black or cordovan. Grey: black, cordovan or darker grey.

Bags: as small as practical. If you can fit a beach towel in it, its too big. Should match your shoes.

This is the style of pants: http://www.thelimited.com/product/c...=regular&dwvar_6939244_colorCode=167&ppid=c48

or these straight leg: http://www.thelimited.com/product/l...olorCode=144&start=47&prefv1=regular&ppid=c47 (note: not flare leg, wide leg, cigarette leg, slim cut, "skinny". The width at the ankle should be the same width as the thigh opening or slightly wider [boot cut]).

This is the style of dress: http://www.thelimited.com/product/c...1=regular&dwvar_3351882_colorCode=144&ppid=c9 (note the matching jacket; do not wear the sleeves scrunched up)

or http://www.thelimited.com/product/t...1=regular&dwvar_4224885_colorCode=71&ppid=c58

or even these: http://www.thelimited.com/product/m...colorCode=40&start=71&prefv1=regular&ppid=c71 (note they are mini and do not dangle from the ear)

This is the color of hosiery: http://www.thelimited.com/product/b...=regular&dwvar_1631700_colorCode=396&ppid=c45

Be careful with the V neck blouses.
As the day wears on there is a tendency for them to go south.
True - V necks should be no more than a couple of inches below the sternal notch (and even then it will depend on the size of your cleavage). Jewel neck, crew neck, or boat neck are preferred if possible. Button front blouses are difficult for most women (as we've discussed before).

In reference to this, I received a PM just today from a long term SDN user who is an IM attending at a US medical school mentioning the cleavage he sees on candidates who are *perhaps* (or not) unaware.

The reason I chose The Limited was because of your post which referenced it.

Its a little cheaper and more approachable for younger women than Ann Taylor and the other places we usually recommend. I wanted to show that you could almost completely outfit yourself from a single store if you knew what to look for.

I think I'll just wear pearl studs and not a necklace, but out of curiosity: would a single strand of pearls be appropriate for med school interviews, or is that too "dressy formal" as opposed to "business formal"? It sits about here on me (maybe a little shorter than what is pictured) https://pearlsoftheorientonline.com/images/products/N533-W.JPG.jpg

I am wondering if these 2 shirts are appropriate. Also is a suit jacket required? Can I just wear a nice shirt on top?

Winged Scapula (or anyone, for that matter), what is your opinion on a woman with an over-the-shoulder briefcase? Personally, I am not much of a purse/tote kind of gal and will be wearing pant suits rather than skirts.

Ooh, I think the first shirt with the tiny pearls is pretty, as long as the neckline works with a jacket (yes, suit jacket is required.) The collar on the second shirt is too distracting to me.

It's fine. In most cases even a purse is overkill but some women like to carry a lot of things around. Perhaps you could do with just a portfolio?

thank you for the reply!! I hope the pearl and beading wouldn't be too causual/unprofessional looking.

Hey all. Just wanted to share my experiences since I spent HOURS at the mall today. I highly recommend Macy's-- I found the best selection of suits there. They had a wide variety of shells there too (I selected a jade green one). Nordstrom, Bloomingdale's, and Banana Republic had a very limited selection. The Limited and Ann Taylor had a decent amount, but they did not fit me right. I am quite tiny (5'0, 95 pounds) and definitely needed petite sizes. I ultimately found the best-fitting suit at Brooks Brothers. Although it was very pricey, I figured it was a good investment for the future. Good luck to everyone shopping for suits, it's quite a challenge (especially the petite girls like me!).

I'm having some trouble finding cordovan pumps to go with my navy suit. I saw little to none in stores and an online search of "cordovan pumps" doesn't bring up promising results. Is there a store or website that specializes in more professional footwear that would be more likely to have this color?

Try expanding your search to 'wine' or 'burgundy'. Or if you shop in person and can bring your suit, also look at navy. But don't try to match navy online because a poor color match just doesn't look right and there are many shades of navy.

I saw a lot of navy shoes at the store, so I think that might be the best option for me. Thank you!

Hey guys, just needed an opinion. Is this ok?
The shirt inside i will probably switch if I can find something better. Im having a hard time finding a suitable top.

As for the shoes picture, are the pants an okay length? my shoes are also slingback...i know this is usually a no no but these shoes are incredibly comfortable for me and the pants are long...so can I get away with it? and lastly, will the gold on my heel be considered too flashy?...

Thanks guys

Overall, I think the suit looks nice. How does it look buttoned? I'm not sure what the recommendation is on belts, but I find the gold on the belt distracting. When you sit down, can you tell the shoes are slingbacks? The gold tip is pushing it, IMO. Does it make the shoes excessively clicky? I do like the overall shape of the shoe, however.

No your best bet is not to wear navy shoes. They are very difficult to match and the appropriate color is a wine or burgundy, also referred to as Cordovan. Since Merlot is the InColor for this fall they should be very easy to find. in addition, you'll get a lot more wear out of a wine colored pair of shoes because they will match so much more than the navy ones will. And it will also be easier to find a matching bag.

By the way, Cordovan actually traditionally refers to the horse hide or shell used to make men's shoes. Also the city in Spain, Cordoba, where they were tanned and dyed that color.

No your best bet is not to wear navy shoes. They are very difficult to match and the appropriate color is a wine or burgundy, also referred to as Cordovan. Thank you for your response. It pains me to say this, but I decided (for now) on a black pair of shoes for a multitude of reasons. I am still on a tireless search for comfortable and affordable cordovan shoes, however.

Hi all, as I begin shopping for my interview soon, I wanted to seek your advice: What are the best options for us curvy girls? I would be okay with pants or a skirt, though I probably would prefer pants. Is there a particular type of jacket/pants/skirt/blouse style I should be looking for? I've always been told dark colors are slimming, but other than that I'm mostly clueless.

I'm 5'3", and mostly pear-shaped (small chest and voluptuous booty, haha) if that helps.

Same here. I have one black pantsuit and one backup navy skirt suit, and after looking for days I've just had to give up and go with black heels to go with both.

I think I've now had more stress nightmares about being judged on my clothing than I have about being judged for what I say.

Black shoes are fine. Please don't cause yourself anymore stress over this.

As noted above, please don't cause yourself that much stress about this.

What we are attempting to do here is to finesse your wardrobe. The choice of brown or Merlot colored shoes with a navy suit is advanced knowledge, finesse, and should not be construed as impacting your application in any fashion.

The applicants who are in danger of having their wardrobe choices judged are those who are so far out of the realm of the usual standard and appropriate choices. Their inappropriate wardrobe choices lead one to consider whether or not this potential future colleague is oblivious or does not care about professional demeanor and comportment.

We're not judging applicants who make slight fashion mistakes like a black suit or wearing a belt that doesn't match their shoes.

Get a grip, guys.

"So why do you want to be a doctor?"

"CORDOVAN!"

So I'm on a very tight budget but I've worn this dress to job interviews, conferences, etc: Amazon product. I usually wear it with these heals: http://www.payless.com/womens-karme...=nudepatent#prefn1=color&prefv1=Black&start=2. Do you guys think it's too casual or otherwise not ideal? Obviously if you think it'll hurt my chances I'll go out and find something else.

I think you need a solid color sheath dress with a matching (color and fabric) jacket if you want to go the dress route. Medical school interviews are (unnecessarily) very formal, so I wouldn't risk it with something like this.
Edit: I'd also avoid patent leather heels in any color.
