How do these programs work because I thought you are advised NOT to work during your first year (and maybe second year) of medical school.

they're usually pretty nominal work and you are limited on the # of hrs you can work

Well, sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. Here we have some programs where you work easy jobs (clerical-type), only around 10 hr/wk.
