Not so sure how much coaching actually goes on in soccer but am not convinced that Maradona has enough experience to get his team through to the finals. With that said, I still like Brazil's chances considering their track record.
Maradona is not a tactician, but he can and does inspire his players. And they have enough class on that team to beat most teams even without great tactical thought. Dunga, on the other hand, is a quiet little man, but he is quite ruthless in shaping his team to his liking...

Anyway, it's Germany vs England tomorrow, that's a game to watch (not to disparage Argentina-Mexico). Considering my dislike for Capello personally and for all things English, and my deep affection for all things German, and the fact that Jogi Loew is the most handsome coach at this Cup (and a few of his players are quite attractive too 😀), I am very much for Germany. 😀

Black Star!!! All the way! :highfive:

Include them in this poll!

Who/what the hell is that?

Ok, so I also had no clue what he was talking about so I googled it. According to wikipedia black star is a hip hop group formed by MCs Mos Def and Talib Kweli. Not so sure where they fit in the world cup picture but if you feel the need to vote for them I will replace them with Japan.

Since my country lost, I'm cheering for the only African country leftover. Ghana silly! I think Ivory Coast is still in the running, have to do a quick check...

Ivory Coast is out, they got knocked out by Brazil and Portugal. Too bad for them, they were in a tough group.

As much as I am rooting for Germany (I owe it to them, since I was cruel enough to support Italy last time around, when both the World Cup and myself were in Germany 😀), I doubt it would be them. Europeans have never won outside Europe... so it probably will be Argentina or Brazil. I like Maradona, he was the first soccer player I ever learned about, picking up a newspaper while on a long train ride... and I like Brazil too - I once ended up staying at the same hotel as the entire Brazilian soccer team and got to chat with a few of them, most were quite nice. 🙂

Oh come on, there's always a first!! I think going by some of the records can be a bit ridiculous. Too much self-fulfilled prophecy going on....

Have you seen them play? Which of European teams actually can outplay the South American bunch this time around? England with moribund attack and usual horror at the goal? Germany with porous defense and lack of the usual killer machine mentality? Portuguese ballet company? Slovaks who will be outclassed out of the tournament, gritty or not? Spain, who barely got their act together barely in time? I guess the Dutchie boys have some momentum, but I don't quite see them winning. The way the play-off spots worked out, Spain has the most realistic chances of making it into semi-finals, but I wouldn't rate their chances very high against Argentina, unless inadequacy of Argentinian defense will finally outweigh the brilliance of Argentinian attack.

I'm not arguing the fact that most have been playing pretty awfully - but from your last post, you made it sound like the European teams didn't have a chance simply because it's not on European land. Throwing out those statistics and records and such and making assumptions from them just kindof annoy me. You're right though, most of the European teams have been playing pretty awful (and the results show with France and Italy both being sent home, as well as other countries). Still can't change my hope for a German win though! 😉

I would be ecstatic if Germany got their fourth Cup, but given what I have seen so far, I would be happy enough to see them beat England. 😳

This Italian team was a very long shot from the team that became Champions in every way - physically, emotionally, mentally. And the team roster was... interesting, let's put it that way. And the French team had ridiculous conflicts all over - within the team, between the coach and the team, the press and the team, and all the combinations of the above. So those two were out of the running from the front. And small teams like Greece or Slovenia - no one took their chances seriously anyway.

Ghana outplayed the US and deserved the win but that one player who suddenly got "cramps" was just pathetic.

Playing devil's advocate, any team in that situation would have done the same. Think about it...American football, a quarterback kneels to run the clock down to preserve a lead or a win. Same thing with basketball, run the 24 second clock to take time off. Maybe even baseball, intentional walk, to get to a player the pitcher can strike out. 😀

Well, I'd understand if they just passed the ball amongst themselves to kill time, but faking an injury was in bad taste.

can i give a shout out for brasil 🙂
there players are hawt!😍

Who will win? hmmmm...

Well, I picked 5 of the 8 Round of 16 match-ups correctly in my ESPN bracket. I have Brazil vs Netherlands in the Quarters, Germany vs Argentina in the Quarters and Spain vs Paraguay in the Quarters. I'm going with Uruguay vs Brazil in the Semis along with Argentina vs Spain in the other Semis.

Brazil vs Spain in the Finale and Brazil winning 2-1 in extra time. Brazil is not over hyped, Dunga is an amazing coach (defensive minded) and was a great player too (94' WC champion). People are unimpressed with Brazil this year because they aren't as offensive minded and flashy as past Brazilian teams...but that's exactly why they are very dangerous. Lucio is the best CB in the tourney, Maicon is the best RB in the tourney and Kaka, Robinho, Elano and Fabiano are 4 of the best offensive players in the tourney. They have a well balanced team, and a good mixture of young and old talent.

Lastly, I'm half Brazilian...so I'm biased. 😀

I got a feeling this post may be moved to off topic...

That's not the same at all.

In real football there is a play clock where a set amount of time is allowed to run off. The other team has timeouts. There is a calculated rules set in how the clock runs. It is entirely objective and one can develop a strategy around these rules if behind. If you flop around injured, the clock stops.

In European football, all you have to do is get a lead, flop around for 10 minutes, and you win. It's stupid. Why don't they just STOP THE CLOCK? Dude goes down injured...stop the clock. Ball goes out of bounds...stop the clock...etc, etc.

Not sure about that one. Germany looks absolutely amazing. 30min in and up 2-0 against England. My wife's German club will have to meet to watch the next game, these guys are just a blast to watch.

Oh man, Germany having 2 up on England TOTALLY woke them up! This game is starting to get really exciting now.

English defense is a circus... but Neuer is a clown too.

But that's a great game. 🙂 The best I have seen so far at this World Cup.

At the beginning of the game I was neutral, but after the referee refused the goal, I am for England now.

I agree with you, the rules of soccer are completely different versus American sports. However, I was pointing out any team(soccer) in that situation would have done the same. And, the main thing is preserving a win. Baseball, football, basketball all have their own method of preserving a win or a lead.

Wooooooo, German win! 😀😀😀

Good game, convincing German win. Arne Friedrich remembering he is more than just a pretty face, Klose getting 12th goal (I hope he can get to 15! He scored 5 at each of the last two Word Cup Finals), Neuer not being too bad (though I still would have preferred Butt in goal), all the Deutsche boys remembering what the game was about and flat out outrunning the English.

I can't wait to see English tabloids tomorrow complaining about Lampard's goal that wasn't counted, though. 😀 Whiners.

Now, Argentina will probably beat Mexico, but hopefully they will collect enough yellow cards to make it easier for Germans...

the germans played like lions . im kind of dissapointed that the refs didnt give lampard that goal he deserved(i mean come on, the ball went in atleast a good yard in the goal)

cant wait to see argentina vs mexico 😉

Two things I would change about soccer.

#1 - Stop the clock when the ball goes out of bounds or injuries.
#2 - Allow rough play. (Tackling opposing player when they don't have the ball, aiming to take the other player out of the game, tripping people, shoving people, etc)

My favorite player ever is Marco Materazzi, the way he plays is how the game should be played.

That's called rugby or American football. 😀 The only thing that would allow would let players who haven't got brain or skills to actually play the game destroy the game because they are big enough/fat enough. There are reasons I don't watch American football, where other than in a few professional games, everyone on the pitch combined displays intelligence approximately equal to or below that of my shoes. 😀 And the fact that is stops every five seconds, possibly because that's the limit of an average Joe's attention span. 😀

I think football/soccer is fine the way it is. Nothing needs changing.👍

Please don't be one of those people that thinks that if Americans loved this game as much as the rest of the world that we would not make the best South American/European teams look like high school kids.

Alan Iverson, Barry Sanders, Ozzie Smith, think of athletes like that playing soccer for the USA. I don't see how anyone thinks the US would lose.

It is like the olympics....we barely care and we dominate people. If soccer was our #1 sport, we would destroy the world. Dream Team soccer version domination.

sounds more like hockey to be honest

also, lets go argentina! messi #10😍

OK I agree that Argentina shouldn't have gotten that 1st goal because Tevez was clearly offside. But hey, life ain't fair. Mexico should have kept their heads in the game because that 2nd goal was laughable.

Easier to say "keep your head in the game" than actually do it, especially when you're in that situation. Poor Mexico. Their anger at that first goal is just completely messing up their ability to play in the remainder.

See now they are totally screwing themselves. 3 goals in 50 mins? They gotta stay focused if they hope to make a comeback in this game (highly unlikely).

Yeah ... that last goal was pretty nice though. Argentina is owning.

Um I'm pretty sure I'm not an idiot and I love American college football. One of our offensive linemen just got into medical school (and UM has a pretty frickin decent medical school). Just because you like soccer and this country 'in general' prefers baseball or football (not futbol) doesn't make us idiots for liking it.

Playing football takes an incredible amount of intelligence. Especially for linemen, middle linebackers, and quarterbacks.

Just look at linemen, every play there is a set of "rules" you need to adhere to. And the person you block changes based upon what the defense does AFTER the snap. So from the time you break the huddle, to when you line up, to when the ball is snapped, to when the defense moves, your blocking assignment might have changed 4 or 5 times within a matter of seconds. And to be successful as a blocker, you have to be able to read the defense on the fly with the zone rules in your head at all times EVERY play. If one guy screws up, its a tackle for a loss.

Laymen do not appreciate the intricacies of the game.

Football is a game of chess with living pieces. Offensive coordinators in the pros and major college programs are some of the most intelligent human beings you will ever meet.

Soccer is just a glorified track meet with a ball thrown in the middle.

There's no need for insulting the intelligence of either footballs. They both require different skills and thought processes...

Now baseball on the other hand ...

Just kidding. Kindof. But I could never understand someone who complained about how boring soccer is, and when asked what they DO like, they pipe, "Baseball!" I can ... vaguely understand how someone would find soccer boring. But I cannot for the life of me understand how someone who would find soccer boring actually find baseball interesting.

Agreed! It's fun to play it, but it's not fun to watch at all. Seems like a lot of standing around most of the game lol.

Personally, I agree with you............. but I really don't like the Argentina coach. So I really DON'T want them to win............
Well, as long as you can admit the truth, as hard as it is 😛

High five. I cannot for the love of god figure out how anyone can find baseball interesting. Regardless of their attitude toward soccer.
