I am currently majoring in accounting and was fairly certain that is what I wanted to do. A few days ago, a recruiter from a pharmacy school visited my chemistry class and gave his presentation which sparked my interest in pharmacy. I talked to my boss at work who used to be a pharmacist and he told me about the nature of the work and other facts about the field.

Anyways…After this semester I will have 65 credit hours, most of them general ed and a few accounting classes. Since I have already completed some biology, chemistry, calculus, and statistics classes for my general ed requirements, I could complete the prerequisites for most schools in a year if I go during the summer.

I have a 3.6 GPA but let’s assume that I get into the harder classes like organic chemistry and molecular biology and I bomb them or do poorly enough to eliminate all chances of being accepted to any pharmacy schools. What is the worse that could happen? Would I be forced to switch back to accounting? That would seem like I wasted a year of my life pursuing classes that are not required for my degree. Are there other options (besides teaching) that I can pursue with all those classes in science?

I enjoy accounting but before I decide to switch majors, I just want to make sure I have some options incase I am unable to get into pharmacy school.

You can get an MHA...and get into hospital administration...either CFO or CEO route...

Lots of alternatives with an accounting (altho econ would be good too) along with medical background.

As Zpak said, CFO or CEO...altho there is industry (every medical device or pharmaceutical corp has a bean counter in it somewhere) along with insurance & managed health care plans....in addition to patient accounting, materials management, capital expenditure or grant departments.

There are lots of options which don't require just pharmacy as your course along with accounting. Do you have a career center? Go online to different medical device &/or pharmaceutical companies, insurance companies. They often will offer intern positions to see if you like it or not.

Good luck!

Getting more education is rarely a waste IMHO. I have a finance degree and I believe you'll be able to try out some science classes without derailing your accounting degree too much provided you don't like it. On another note, as stated before, you could get an MHA or MBA and go into healthcare. I have a good friend with an MHA and she likes it, but I think it is a lot of accounting. No one can tell you what you're going to like to do, give it a try.

Thanks for all the input. It looks like I have nothing to loose by trying the classes. If I decide it isn't for me then at worse, I graduate a year later than I would have if I never tried. At least it will be a year of learning instead of a year of doing nothing and wasting time. Even if I don't use anything from the classes in my accounting degree, the knowledge could be useful if I ever go on Jeopardy one day and I also will not have to regret never trying to see if it was right for me or not.

Good attitude! 👍 There's no need to rush into your adult career anyway 🙂 Enjoy school while you can!
