worst OR music ever

How do you define Christian music? There are bands like Switchfoot that are historically Christian, but would hardly be recognized as such with most of their singles.

I've never heard of Switchfoot. If the lyrics aren't religious, then it's just another band as far as being appropriate in the OR. I'm not suggesting that people shouldn't like Christian music if they think it's good, I certainly can't judge it since I never listen too it. I'm just suggesting that they shouldn't listen to it in the OR where other people are forced to listen to it too.

It's hard to draw the line. Bob Marley for example has lots of religious lyrics and I'd be happy to have someone turn that on in the OR. Nashville country seems to have a requirement for at least one gratuitous reference to prayer in every song to get played on the radio, and I also don't think it would be wrong to play in the OR. There's a gray area, but a lot of bands are clearly Christian or clearly secular.

Christian music is inapproprate for the workplace whether it sounds like metal or amy grant or rap or (god forbid) creed or whatever.

I totally agree. If someone has a problem with lyrics of the music I listen to I would turn it off in a heartbeat or at least inquire what about the song they don't like. I like hardcore music some of those bands happen to have Christian background some don't. I wasn't saying I ONLY listen to Christian bands. I'm just a fan of that style of music. They aren't gaudy or obnoxiously religious. Most people don't believe me when I say they are Christian when listening to them the first time. Search Norma Jean, Haste the Day, Maylene and the Sons of Disaster. All Christian and each one I listened to before knowing this.

On another note I doubt I could survive a day of Motown or '50s music.

Ortho buddy of mine insists on playing country.

I've announced to the room many times how country music has been linked to increased PSA levels...

Our ortho guys only play 2 types of music: country and western.
the music is as tired as the joke.

Im pretty fish out of water to all you guys, just a pre-med, but I felt that this experience was relevant to those of you who DJ the ORs...

About 7 years ago I followed a Cardiothoracic PA to observe an open heart. Im 19 years old. First experience observing anybody or anything, really. First OR experience. 2 years in the hospital biz but literally a green as green could be relating to the OR. The PA is going to deposit me off in the room as the patient is getting his lines etc, the doors open, I walk into the room, and LITERALLY, nugent's "stranglehold" is in maybe its first 15 seconds. as this patient is laying supine and the anes. is doing work.

ok tell me that isnt bada**.

totally brought me into tens of other cases (as an observer of course). choose wisely my friends haha.

I should be a little clearer about the music policy that I would have in mind. Clearly you cannot legislate appropriate taste or specific music. There are songs that may be appreciated by some, but may cause distress or just be annoying to others. Some songs that I like but understand would not generally be appropriate in the OR...

"Rape Me" - Nirvana

"Trash" - Korn

"Closer" - NIN (although the chipmunks version can be pretty funny with the right crowd)

"Sweet Dreams (are made of this)" - Marilyn Manson (though the Eurythmics version would be ok)

Pretty much any Afroman song

"I Don't Care About You" - Guns 'n Roses

As an atheist, I don't want to listen to songs that talk about how I am going to hell or whatever. I enjoy some of Keith Green's music, and I will occasionally pop on a song like Garth Brooks "Unanswered Prayers." However, I wouldn't want to listen to things like Keith Greens "I Only Want to See You There." If you are thinking that you may convert me, I have to ask do you really want me pondering whether I am going to spend eternity burning in the lake of fire during a case or do you want me focusing on the patient? I also generally despise the majority of the music that is categorized as contemporary christian. It is like the worst pablum that only sells because it is "Christian" and not "Devil Music Rock." Don't even get me started on the choral "uplifting" crap.

So the policy should be one that simply states that anyone can at any time request that the music be changed without fear of reprisal. We can argue about the appropriateness of different songs/ bands, but when it comes right down to it there is no way to legislate this a-priori. The absolute worst thing you can do though is to punish someone for requesting a change in the music.

If you haven't seen it, you should watch the South Park episode where Cartman starts a Christian rock band.

Okay, this thread made me come out of a 6-year posting hiatus to comment. (New screen name now, since the old one wasn't so anonymous...)

We have a plastic surgeon who listens to contemporary Christian music ALL DAY during million-hour long cases. The irony of it all- she's a huge, um, well, she's not very nice.

I also did a 9-hour kidney in the middle of the night with the Lady Gaga pandora station playing the entire case.

Not sure is we are at the same institution, but I loved my plastic rotations but one attending play NON-STOP praise music EVERYDAY. I can take a little, but man... that damn near killed me.
