Would it be okay to shadow a doctor at the health center at school? I'm thinking that in terms of patients, it would lack some diversity. And it might be less busy than other normal places, thus less patient contact. It might not be an ideal representation of doctors who practice. But I do have 1 year ED volunteer experience and a little EMT experience.

Would it matter much?

You could shadow a physician pretty much anywhere...as long as they're seeing patients...if you want to shadow their CLINICAL experience. Try it out and see how you like it, and if you don't think it's fulfilling...then try shadowing one in a clinic/hospital/medical center. Good luck, and remember, most DO schools either RECOMMEND or REQUIRE a letter from a DO that you've worked with/shadowed.

The only thing you might consider is that you may be seeing patients that are fellow classmates and from my experience, they usually don't want someone they know from class hearing about their health problems. This may not happen but you might want to see if there are other doctors you can shadow just in case.

Have you asked the doctors there yet? I worked at my universitys health center, and they told me that they really wanted to let me but they couldnt because I would know some of the students from my classes and this would really be an invasion of privacy. Many of the students that go to school health centers have STD check ups and HIV testing, it can be a really uncomfortable situation for them to be in the room with someone from their class. I would recommend not shadowing with your schools health center because, trust me, the problems the student come in with are not something you want to see. Unless you want to be a gyn. 😱
