Hello everyone,

I am not sure I signed up for the right type of forum here. I am 16 years old in high school, but I have an extreme passion for the medical field, specifically neurology and optometry. I have lots of questions I would like to ask that the AP Chem/Bio teachers at my school cannot answer. I am currently in AP biology and I enjoy the class very much and have always dreamed of going into the medical field. Basically, I am seeking a forum where I can ask questions to people who won't mind answering a high school kid, not that people on here are unwilling to help, this is only my first post so what do I know, but I just don't want to bother anyone or waste space on the forum. Is this a forum intended only for students in pre med/medical school/doctors? Is it ok for me to be asking questions on here even if they may not sound as complex as some of the stuff you talk about? I mean its not going to be dumb questions, I do have knowledge of this stuff, but not as advanced. Thanks in advanced for any help and sorry if I chose the wrong forum.

Justin

*and yeah i know the two fields optometry and neurology...different but thats a decision when the time comes...🙂

Hello, welcome to SDN. It definitely gets a bit crazy here. This particular sub-forum is for non-traditional students as Eileron said, but you're certainly welcome to hang out and browse here.

There is actually a forum for high school aged folks, like yourself, interested in medicine and related career paths here: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/forumdisplay.php?f=420 that's probably a good place to spend the bulk of your time.

Just a word of caution if you do some browsing outside the high school forum, the pre-allo forum (mostly college aged kids) gets a bit crazy and people are a bit neurotic. Don't let that intimidate you. Just learn to take a lot of that with a grain of salt.

I like what WholeH told you. Be careful to critically evaluate the source of information given on ANY forum. Start reading discussions, and look for reliable sources. Check people's status and badges to get a sense of who they are.

Best of luck

P.S. As an aside, I think you mean "ophthalmology" - no worries, rookie mistake. 🙂

Thanks everyone for the help. And vc, when talking about that I used to say ophthalmology, but then someone "corrected" me and told me to say optometry. What exactly is the difference, and when should you use one over another?

Thanks

EDIT: aahhh now I see the difference, yes definitely ophthalmology is what I would like. Thank you for the correction.
