What many on the right (and even the left) forget is that during the Supreme Court decision that struck down affirmative action in college admissions, Justice Roberts in the majority decision said two things.

1) Colleges are well within their right to look at each individual applicants attributes such as things that they have overcome (including racism) in making decisions.

2) Race based decisions are important in insuring a diverse military and should be kept in place.

Go back and look at the decision. This is what was said. It is brushed aside by those on the right trying to make a point similar to how those who want the Second Amendment to say what their agenda holds conveniently leaves out the part about the militia.
Having overcome obstacles makes one more qualified, I agree. I’d take a smart kid who grew up poor/underrepresented/minority/et al over a kid that boosted his ACT by 6 points because of expensive courses. A diverse military does not equate “equal representation at every level.” That is wildly overstepping any reasonable goal or Supreme Court decision akin to absolutist views of 2A.

Thanks for the sound and thoughtful response.

Speaking up for those with no voice is a noble and meaningful pursuit. This is different than feeling the need to speak out against every dumb thing people put out there. Releasing a statement, making a post and/or changing one’s avatar is not the morally superior, brave response some think it is any more than posting flags and eagles makes one a “patriot.”

Sometimes ignoring nonsense rather than elevating it with a response is best.
I get your point but this was from a US Senator in his party not the anonymous blogger in the corner of the internet. He was in the unique position of being a respected person at least in the Republican/MAGA crowd and I think he deliberately chose to not be brave and stand up to his party's ugly underbelly (especially since they were criticizing a class that he belongs to).

Likewise, Vance in front of a crowd could have easily said that bigotry and racism does not belong in their coalition. Instead he said all that are willing to follow his view are welcome.

My daughter's college commencement speaker summed this up best by telling my daughter's very talented class at a top5 engineering school that the world needs their bravery more than it needs their brilliance. She gave the best commencement speech that I have every heard. Her name is Reshma Saujani. She founded Girls that Code and was named one of the TIME women of the year for 2026.

There is a massive bravery and morality gap in our politicians. Many current Rs are acting like rising medical administrators, mindlessly following the hive…sleeping their way to middle management.

Besset calling out every anti-gay stance in the party must be almost as exhausting as being black in the party. Kaitlyn Jenner-style isolation.

I see your point. I will give him a pass but it was disappointing.

Ogles is not a senator. I had to look him up bc never heard of him. He's a congressman from TN. Let his colleagues respond if they want. Or better yet, no one needs to respond to his personal views. That's a question for his constituents.

It would be way below Bessent to respond to this. I would honestly be disappointed if he responded. He's not "a gay". He's an American and Secretary of Treasury.

My mistake. He is a Congressman.

This is what he posted on his social media account.

“Homosexuality has no place in America. Happy Nuclear Family Month”

He claims it was a staffer. Ok man, whatever you say.

Maybe you and I are different, hyper. I can tell you that if the CEO of my Hospital or the head of the Texas Medical Board said on a social media account that African American physicians have no place in America, I would not sit back and be silent. Maybe you are different and that is fine.

They would be out of a job before he could delete the post, and you know it. He would be unemployable, rightfully so. You would be right to speak out against that. You also wouldn’t lose an ounce of my respect for standing quiet on solid ground and letting them rot in the grave they dug for themselves. If no one were to speak up against that, I agree that would be a huge problem.

That is my point. In normal times Ogle's career as a politician in any capacity would be over after saying something like that.

However, in the time of "make america hate again" you can see something like that, blame a staffer, and not miss a beat.

Yearning for an end of these times.....

You finally get it! I knew we could get you there. Just like every other area we were discussing. I’m proud of you

You agree, the lack of a certain gender or racial group in a particular vocation or field of study is in large part societal, and that vocation or field is not responsible for who applies.

Or is that only true when you’re trying to make an argument?
this is not the flex you think it is.

you are now contending that blacks not only arent qualified but they do not want to go to college.

you even use the argument that they dont want to be baroque musicians.

there is no data to suggest that blacks do not want to go to college.

what they major in college is not the issue - the issue is getting into college and the social structural impediments to getting in. you are attempting to reframe the argument, and it is nonsequitor.

FWIW, lbtqia individuals can have nuclear families. not sure how anyone can state that homosexuals cannot have nuclear families. i have 2 such families in my immediate neighborhood.

i dont care if Bessent speaks out about gay rights. i do care that he lies vociferoulsy to justify current admin policies.

this too shall pass. Back to “normal” is a very different world than when Clinton was in office. We’ve changed a lot as a society in one generation. An election cycle is a blip.

Ok, this is working toward something substantiative, but still quite vague. It's a major improvement than the initial talking point that the entire cabinet consists of unqualified, anti-DEI misfits.

FWIW, there was a time when having a gay guy in the cabinet earned major "cool points" for diversity.

Do you think the next Democrat administration will revive DEI?

I think they'll bring it back but call it something else.

this comment i made about Bessent is i believe the first comment i have made about trumps staff. ive never said anything about his staff as a whole.

however, there are a few that i do think are incompetent or downright antithetical to the role and never should have been hired (RFK Jr, Hegseth, McMahon come to mind).

That’s a much more reasonable take than making that claim about the entire cabinet. There seems to me a clear distinction between the competent adults and the thoughtless, boisterous influencer-types you mentioned.

Hard to say

At a minimum there should be standards about who is qualified for a cabinet secretary position. Regardless of political affliation, a Fox News host should not be making very important life and death decisions about defending our country.

Despite what you say here, there are multiple studies showing GPA as the strongest predictor of college success. Many suggest using both standardized testing and GPA but if using one GPA alone gives a better prediction.

Here is a study performed by the ACT itself. Even it does not suggest using ACT or other standardized testing as the one best predictor. If anyone would have a financial incentive to adopt your opinion, it would be them, dont you think?

Here you go. The paper Dartmouth used to justify bringing back their test required policy. Since then, many other schools have followed suit.

These universities, as evidenced by their actions, have made their position clear.

1. They find value in standardized testing for admissions. 2. They don't trust the objectivity of highschool GPAs.
