WSU/USU c/o 2018 applicants!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Anyone from Wyoming on here? I just got an email for and invitation to meet with Dr. Talcott the admissions officer because she is coming to the state lab to make a presentation and there are only about 8 spots. The email said to treat this as an informal interview!

I did that with her at my school last year. 🙂

Do you think it helped you? What did you talk about? I'm nervous! Lol

It did. We talked about my application, what my strengths and weaknesses are, and how she thought I needed to further prepare. At the end she told me to "unofficially" prepare for an interview up in pullman. I did not wear my interview suit to it but I did wear slacks and a blazer.

That's awesome, Kenggy! Congrats! Be sure to let us know how it goes. Good luck :luck: I'm your neighbor over here in Utah, and am applying to the WSU regional program as well. Sending you positive vibes for your meeting with Dr. Talcott!

Thanks LV! I will def let you know!

Well I had my interview today! I think it went very well! The only thing that made me feel a little uneasy was that Dr. Talcott asked me what my extracurricular activities were and I drew a blank. I don't really do much outside of working and shadowing so I feel like I have to go volunteer or something now!?!? Anyways, I'm going to the presentation tonight. Does anyone know when they notify for official interviews?

Hi Kenggy! Glad that your 'pre-interview' went well! As for official interviews, the WSU website lists the dates as follows: http://www.vetmed.wsu.edu/ProspectiveStudents/Admissions/Deadlines.aspx [scroll down to the bottom of the screen and you'll see all the dates listed for the various states involved in the regional program].

You're from Wyoming, correct? Does that mean that you're applying to WSU via WICHE? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression that WICHE applicants were not formally interviewed by WSU. See: http://www.vetmed.wsu.edu/ProspectiveStudents/Admissions/Criteria.aspx [Line item '8' 'The Personal Interview]. If you're applying to WSU via the OOS pool (not via WICHE, not via any of the states involved in the regional program) then you would be interviewed according to the information provided by WSU's website. Being a WY resident, you would know more about this than I do, I just figured I'd clarify.

As for extracurricular activities, I am of the opinion that an individual should not participate in an activity for the sole purpose of obtaining admission to a professional program. The activities you participate in should reflect you as a person, and what you do with your time irrespective of whether you'd be applying to professional school. Plus, a last ditched attempt to obtain 'extracurricular' activities at this stage of the application game would look fixed/manipulated for that very reason, at least from my perspective as an ad com.

Have fun at the presentation tonight! Please keep us updated as to things progress! Good luck, and best of success!! 👍 :luck:

Finally got a confirmation letter from WSU that my application is complete and is now ready for review. Anyone else?! 🙂

Yes LV, I learned while I was there that WICHE students don't get an interview. But now Dr. Talcott is saying I may actually be a Washington resident b/c my husband is and in the military (we moved to Wyoming from Washington). I could probably do either but now I don't know which applicant pool would benefit me more. I know they accept more WA residents but I'm sure they also have more WA residents apply than WHICHE. I guess I have to talk to Barbara Hodson,

I agree with you on the starting extra curricular activities now, it would be disingenuous. I have been the state director for a presidential campaign and a PAC which I drew a blank about when she asked, but I worked it into the interview later.

Dr. Talcott was awesome! She is such a nice person and really made me feel good about the program. I will let you now as soon as I hear!

Someone asked if anyone else's application was verified, and I got an email last week hrs mine was, just FYI.

Got a confirmation email.

Just out of curiosity are you an IS, or WICHE? Im an OOS and I was just wondering where they are at in their app pool, or maybe this doesn't matter.... hmmm

State director for a presidential campaign/PAC?? That's huge! Definitely play that up. Not many applicants can claim such an extracurricular achievement 🙂

Wow...two states in which to claim residency. Tough choice. I'm not quite sure which way I'd go on that one. Good luck making the decision.

I'm glad that you're feeling positive about WSU, and that you had a pleasant interaction with Dr. Talcott. Please do keep us updated as to how things roll out from your end.

As for WSU Receipt of Credentials/Verification, I received this as well on October 11th. I submitted my VMCAS application on September 1st, and am applying to WSU via the Regional Program (UT), if these details are of any help to folks still waiting to hear back regarding 'official' confirmation from WSU.

Good luck, everyone! This is a top choice school for me. I can't wait to hear back. I'm sure this is the same for many of us posting on this board. I've got my fingers crossed for all of us. Sending out good vibes for all of my fellow WSU applicants 👍 :luck:

Last year I didn't get my interview invite until very early January. I'm an oos.

And don't even worry about your confirmation email. All that is is saying they have your stuff. It really has nothing to do with the decision making process or where they are in processing apps.

About the WICHE vs WA resident thing... a lot of WICHE states require that you return to your state and work for a certain period of time in order to "pay back the state" for supporting you during vet school. I'm not sure about WY. At least several years ago, the numbers were favor if you're a WA resident rather than a WICHE state resident in terms of percentage of applicants admitted as well, but that also depends on your state, because the state that is supporting the students dictates how many WICHE-funded spots there will be from the state. My former (WICHE) state only supported like 2-3 students/year, while approximately 40 WSU spots went to WA residents.... I know when I was choosing between maintaining WICHE state residency vs becoming a WA resident it was a much better choice for me to become a WA resident, and I got to choose where to go after graduating.

Anyone get invite to official interviews yet? I haven't heard a peep. Application status still "pending".

I think last year they were sent out later December/early January IIRC. Don't stress yet. 🙂
Thanks for the info. I saw on their website that Nov/Dec was when they predict to have interview invites sent, so was becoming a bit worried! Will stop obsessing and go enjoy the day now!

Keep an eye on your mailboxes, WSU/USU peeps! Interview invites are on the way! I received mine on 11-30-13 (snail mail). So excited!!

i checked but nothing...i'm sure though that i will be the last person to receive one seeing as I live in Florida lol all the way across the country

Thanks very much. To answer your question, I'm a Tier I applicant based upon the WSU scoring system.

Congrats! Sorry for all the questions, but did you apply to the WSU campus for all four years or partial attendance at the USU campus?

Hi Lauren,
I'm a UT state resident, so my application went directly into the USU pool. Should I be granted acceptance, I would attend my first two years at USU, and my final two years at WSU.

Good to know that they have started to send out interviews. I keep checking my e-mail and my mailbox religiously. I am driving everyone around me nuts. lol.

I also received my interview invite. I'm a UT resident, it came snail mail on Friday the 29th 🙂

I'm so nervous that my invite or rejection will get lost in the mail and I will be sitting here waiting forever haha

those who got rejections or invites: so they don't send ANY email contact ?

Nope, no email. I like the fact that WSU/USU sends its official correspondences via snail mail. I feel much more like a person than I do a number. I assume that such was also the way correspondence was handled with the Montana folks. In fact, MT students should have already found out if they were admitted (MT interviews were held in late November). Any WIMU MT folks on SDN?? Any early acceptances to WIMU??

I'm OOS and haven't heard anything. Anyone OOS get any news?

Nope not yet, although my anxiety level has increased now...
I'm OOS (Cali resident) and last name that starts with W, lol I'm expecting to be at the end of the mailing list!

OOS from Colorado. No word yet here.

Okay so it's all good!! If no one has heard anything then no one has to worry 🙂. Maybe they are sending IS out first or something!

Did your portal status change at all?
Not sure. I hadn't checked in a while (WSU doesn't tend to communicate through the 'portal,' and there were no instructions to check the portal on a regular basis), then I happily received my invite in the mail 🙂
