Great post, FoughtFyr and Daiphon.
I applied to UIC with hopes of Chicago and was assigned the Rockford campus. Everything you've described and I've read about the Rockford campus clinical training has impressed me.
The only thing giving me pause is Rockford itself. I know three folks who've spent time there or lived there and none had anything flattering to say about the place, other than that it's cheap. As a med student, I could probably ignore the town itself and devote myself to studies, but as I'm married, that muddies things a bit.
Thanks for the post. Rockford really looks like a great education...
First off, you can get any residency you want coming from Rockford, the key is to understand the set-up. Your faculty are clinical folks. Working harder is far more important to them than being smarter. The MS who comes in everyday, has all of the notes written, plans made, and can speed the surgeon or internist through their hospital rounds quickly will get a GREAT set of letters with phone calls made on your behalf, etc. You will be allowed to do things you probably shouldn't be allowed to do (I've done skin to skin laproscopy procedures) and will really be a part of the team. But, if you try to go in and be the PIMP master, pontificating at length on each patient (you know, do the things that would get you ahead at a traditional academic medical center) in most cases you won't find as much support. One of my IM attendings said it best "the good lord gave you a finite brain capacity but an unlimited ability to sweat".
As for the living situation. Live on the far east side (or if you can tolerate a short commute - live in Belvidere). The resale market stinks so rent, don't buy. Stretch to rent as expensive as you can, that generally gives you a better class of neighbor.
You will do great!
