WVSOM Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey Guys! Just got an invite for 10/6 this morning!!! 🙂

I think they're starting to send them out! If it helps, I received an email from them saying they received my app from AACOMAS on July 8... Hope this helps and Good Luck!!!!!

Hi Everyone,
I also am in the 'Decision Deferred' category. I just called admissions to see what that meant, and basically she said that she *THINKS* they are going to review my application a second time after they get a general feel for the applicant pool and see if I might be competitive or not. From what she told me, it seems that my MCAT score is above the range they are looking for (they are looking for 24-25; mine is 27Q), but my Sci GPA is below their range (they look for 3.3; mine is 3.09). I guess I'm hoping they give me another look later? I'm a non traditional applicant, and my undergraduate GPA is pretty bad, but ever since I graduated I have kept up a 4.0, both in my post-bac courses, and in my MS program.

I'm assuming this isn't horrible news tho - right? I mean I suppose they also reject at this point, so at least we're not in that boat?

~Tarun

Might I add - she was EXTREMELY nice, I hope I get an interview there, because they seem to be a really awesome school 🙂

Well, I think if you have a deferred application, they are interested in you-otherwise they would have rejected you straight out like you said. Did you retake the MCAT? That seems to be the reason why they are deferring applications. Hopefully you get an invite soon :luck:

I have yet to hear anything. My status says "decision pending".

Aw thanks for the kind words 🙂 Actually, no I have not retaken the MCAT - my application is complete, I mean I am still finishing up my master's program, maybe they want to see how I do in the fall? I wonder if that means they are going to wait until December...hmmm. Well I guess all I can do now is wait, right?

I hope you get an invite soon too 🙂

i got a 3.96 and a 27M...i didnt put im retaking....

my ECs are fine...maybe they have to really like u as a whole for u to get an interview..

Was deferred. Sent an update / spoke to admissions, and then received an email yesterday saying that I need to include more info about my misdemeanor (noise violation) and that until they receive the info my application will remain deferred. Was deferred about 3 weeks before I received this email. To me it seems like they just want to make sure it wasn't anything too serious and that they will likely then offer an interview. I'm kind of taking this because they just deferred me before, and now it's like they took a second look at my app and liked what they saw but they want to make sure I don't have any skeletons in my closet before they offer an interview. What do you guys think? This whole thing has my hopes up because it isn't too serious of an infraction... 🙂

I received notification via email yesterday that I was granted an interview, and they would be contacting me within the next couple days with the details. My application was received by WVSOM 7/15/10, so don't give up everyone. It may take a while, but they will get to your app!

Congrats to everyone else that got an interview, and good luck to the rest of you!🙂

I got an interview as well! Anyone else Interviewing on Oct. 1, PM me. Would be nice to be familiar with people there.

Also, does anyone know how were supposed to get from the Roanoke Airport to the actual city? It's like an hour drive...

Anybody find any good deals for flying into roanoke or charleston? I cant seem to find anything under $600!!!

Nevermind guys found something for 300 on kayak

17th in the PM! See you for the tour. 😉

Again, are there any female applicants who'd like to split a hotel room the 16, 17 or both? Trying to save money!

Got an email for an interview...it says "The Supplemental Application and Disciplinary Form are the two forms (along with your application fee) that need to be sent via the US Postal Service and received by the Admissions Office within one week of this notice."

So it would have to be received in the office by next Tuesday, or is that a postmark deadline? I have an interview coming up for another school which I'm preparing for, so I wouldn't want to write the supplemental essay by tomorrow in order to have it reach the office that soon...

Since the email said received by the admissions committee, I sent the secondary out the day after I got it just to be safe. Also there is a spot on the secondary for your picture and you don't find that out until you print the secondary out. I had to scramble around trying to find a picture because none of my others ones needed it, so just be aware of that. On SDN some say it is optional, on the secondary it doesn't say if it is or not.

Good Luck

Thanks for the reply...do you happen to know if it's absolutely impossible to change my interview date? I would like to push it back since the date they gave wasn't the best for me, but I also don't want to lose the opportunity

I think you're shot at an interview is good. Lewisburg is a small town, and the school takes its image seriously, which means applicants with a police record receive some scrutiny. And there's the whole "previous behavior as an indicator of future behavior" bit... same reason schools look at academic records like GPA. They want to make sure you will thrive.

It is absolutely impossible. If you have another med school interview scheduled for the same day, make a choice.

I'm pretttty sure I've read about people from past years having changed their interview dates. I think they just say it cannot be changed to avoid having everyone calling/emailing to switch dates. Might want to skim previous threads to double check though.

edit: I was curious so I went ahead and checked: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=651875 posts 14-18 are people talking about having changed dates last year.

I went by the admissions office this afternoon and asked the ladies there, and they said they rarely reschedule because it involves shuffling everyone else's interview times. Exceptions can be made for your wedding, surgery, or in some cases, an exam that can't be rescheduled with a professor. When I saw ciruelo's comment about it "not being the best date for me" I was assuming from the wording that they weren't getting married or planning surgery. I guess they could have an exam on that date.

I'm sorry if this sounds rude or mean, but why would you want to reschedule your interview if you do not have something important happening on that day? If you have an emergency or an event as listed above, then I would understand. However, if your reasoning in wanting to reschedule your interview is that you want to prepare for another school's interview, then that just tells me that you would rather go to the other school. Therefore, you should withdraw your application from WVSOM. The majority of schools ask the same "get to know you" questions anyway; so all you should really have to prepare for are a few school-specific questions.

Yes, but we don't actually know why the given date was not a good one for him. Even if the reason is in order to focus on another interview, what is wrong with that? I too have a few favorite schools, but the majority of us apply broadly because even if we don't get into our top choice school(s) we still want to become physicians. Just because someone has not zeroed in on a school they've been invited to interview at does not mean that they won't be a good fit at the school. I had to reschedule an interview because my club ultimate frisbee team will most likely be in florida for nationals. This doesn't mean I don't care about that school and should withdraw my application.

I do agree with you that interviewing should be a top priority and I'm not trying to pick a fight with you. Merely trying to supply the other side of the argument. Good luck at wvsom!

You can fly into Roanoke, it is about 1.5 hours away. If your willing to drive more you can find cheaper flights. I am saving about $200 by flying into Charlotte and its nonstop so just look around. As far as hotels, I don't really know I haven't started looking yet.

I would recommend flying into Greenbrier airport (which requires a stop because there are only a few airports that fly into there) and staying at the Hampton. They are a little more expensive, but they have a free shuttle. That is an important factor if you do not plan to rent a car because rental companies are few and far between around here, and a taxi service is pretty much non-existent (to my knowledge anyways). LOL

Congrats on the interview by the way!👍

Does anyone know where to find the "health and technical standards" form? I see it on my checklist, but it is nowhere to be found in the status portal or in an email.

Not totally sure but i think we get it at the interview

Application Preference: Not entered
Application Status: In Process
Decision: Decision Pending

Just spoke to admissions... the health and technical standards form is not required until you are officially accepted.

Thanks. It solved problem many people were facing.

congrats. Any recommendations/ideas whic is teh closest hotel to the campus?

The closest hotel is the General Lewis Inn, which is 1-2 blocks from the school, and within walking distance (.35 miles, residential). You will also (probably) be taken to lunch at the General Lewis on the day of your interview by students.

The closest "chain" hotels are Holiday Inn (I stayed here, was fine) or Hampton Inn. I believe both of these offer shuttles to and from the airport but you'd have to call to confirm. Both are within a mile from the school, but I wouldn't walk as the road is busy and there are no sidewalks that I remember.

General Lewis is more of a touristy place. I stayed at Holiday Inn for about $100 earlier this year. Priceline and that ilk weren't able to save me too much money since it's a very small market. There's also a Quality Inn and a Super 8 within 1 mile of the school.

My wife and I chose to drive the 8 hours from Atlanta, and it wasn't too bad. If you're coming farther than that, I'd recommend flying to Lewisburg. Some people recommend flying into Roanoke, but that's over an hour and a half drive (plus time getting the rental car).

I spent quite awhile searching and calling hotels for the cheapest deal, and I just booked my hotel for September 14th at the Quality Inn for about $70 (that's with a 10% AAA discount). I didn't feel that was too bad.

I did find one for about $55, but there were many recent reviews about bed bugs, and I'm not too thrilled about that, haha.

So check the quality Inn if you're still looking around!

Just wanted to wish you guys good luck on your interviews, I interviewed extremely late in the cycle last year after the class was already full, luckily they gave me a rollover acceptance to the class of 2015. The entire interview day was great, they are really laid back and just want to get to know you. The only tip I can give is be honest and sincere, they honestly didnt ask any difficult questions, which was a complete 180 compared to every other interview I had ever had, which were constantly trying to make you fumble. The WVSOM interviewer's seemed to just want you to succeed. It was a very pleasant experience. If any of you guys get in please message me cause i want to start putting together some sort of Facebook or email group to set up housing and things of that sort

Sean

I am staying at the Super 8. I told them I was interviewing at WVSOM and they gave me a discount. It's around 50-60 dollars per night.

I have 2 questions: about secondary

Is it necessary to send the form by USPS as it is said in the email?
If I am late by 2-3 days in sending my secondary, is it OK? I am alraedy late by 2 working days and 5 total days (including weekends)?

Thanks

sorry for posting in 2009-10 forum easlier

I would call the admissions office immediately and ask. I'm sure you can send it next day air.

It is very important that you are not late. I received an email by mistake saying that my application would be withdrawn if I did not submit my materials immediately. However, I called admissions, and they said it was an automated system and it was an error. I asked if it was really a big deal if my materials had been late, and she said yes, but I didn't ask what the ramifications were if you late by the time frame you stated. Have you received the email saying that your app would be withdrawn? I am sure you will be fine... they are very understanding... just get it in ASAP! Good luck 👍

Thanks. I got it on Wednesday last and then there was 3 days long weekend. posting it today. This way I already lost 5 days.
I did not receive any warning email as of yet.

Is anyone going to be in town evenings of 9/16 and 9/17 for the 9/17 interview that would be interested in getting dinner or just hanging out? I'll be there both nights and it might get lonely! PM me if anyone will be there then and is interested!

TO: Any current WVSOM students or anyone that can help me

I am in desperate need of advice. Initially, when I received the call that I have been granted an interview, I thought it was scheduled for 10:15am. Looking over my email, I am now seeing that I am supposed to be there at 10:15am and that my interview won't actually be until the afternoon session. However, my flight is booked for leaving 3:20pm the same day because I thought I would be done by then. I can't really afford to buy a new flight and hotel room and Delta won't change my flight. Do I have any chance of getting in on the morning interviews? Should I arrive at WVSOM at 8 am? The worst thing that could happen is that I actually am scheduled for the morning interview and I miss is. This is all happening this Monday so I can't call WVSOM.

Please help.

You did not mention if you are flying out of Lewisburg or Roankoke. If you are flying out of Lewisburg, the afternoon interviews begin at 2PM. They don't last long... somwhere between 15 minutes and 45 minutes. My wife's interview was the first scheduled in the afternoon, and we were on the road well before 3pm.

See my PM for additional information.

anyone interviewing here this Wednesday? I was hoping to meet another interviewee and possibly get something to eat. PM if you are interested.

So I need some major advice here...

It came to my attention that my gmail emails have not been going through, as many people/schools have been having issues with not receiving them. I am preparing to leave tomorrow for my WV interview for Wednesday, and I noticed my email confirming my interview date that I sent Aug 20th did NOT go through!!

My checklist confirms that everything is okay, and I just emailed Angela (through a different email account) giving her the situation. I plan on calling in the morning as well. Do you think I will still be okay? I think I need some reassurance :/

I can only offer logic in this case.

First, I would email Annette Moore who works with Angela in admissions. I've PMed you her email address.

I would leave as you have planned. If there is a problem and they can fix it, then you can do your interview on Wednesday. I do know that they don't reschedule interviews, so you will definitely be out of luck if you don't show up. Make the effort and you might succede.

On the bright side, if you are coming from Ohio, it's not that far in terms of interview distance.
