WVU acceptance/waitlist

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
yah, it was actaully on Jan 29th, why do you ask?

I called Beth Ann and yesterday and found out that the dean's committee has reviewed my file and my file was still on the waiting list....so that sucks for me!

Hey GujuMD,

I don't think this sucks too much unless she told you they've re-reviewed you and you are still on the waitlist. My feeling is that we got the waitlist letters because the Dean's committee put us on the waitlist originally (seeing that my letter took 1.5 months to arrive after my interview). Therefore, the only way we can come off of it is if they re-review us and choose to take us off. So it's not like she told you "we're done reviewing you this cycle and you will stay on the waitlist until someone gives up a spot and you happen to be next in line"--remember, they still have 25% of their class open, and it is likely that their interview season is winding down now (by the way, does anyone know when they're done interviewing?). From the tone of the waitlist letter, it seems kind of like a post-interview hold category. It is likely they will take a few of us off the waitlist before May 15th. Be posistive! At least we are on the waitlist!

I'm not exactly sure when the interview season ends but I do know someone who has an interview scheduled for the first week of March.

Also, has anyone found out yet whether the 75% figure includes those who have already committed to WVU, or does it only mean that they have sent out acceptance letters for 75% of the slots?

Because I interviewed on the 31st and I'm still anxiously awaiting some mail.

I think they are a week behind, on the committee meeting...Beth Ann told me the Adm. committee meets every tuesday (so I got reviewed the day after I interviewed, the 30th) and you interviewed the day after that. I am betting you will get something at least by next week.

I know a friend of mine got accepted off the waitlist last year at the end of June, so while the class may be 75% full, it is a dynamic list that will continue to change for several months to come...it sucks to find out so late but I guess we got no choice!

I agree. There is really nothing else we can do but wait and be positive. I know as much as anyone about how the waitlist sucks after being placed on it the past two years. good luck!

Vector,

This is what Beth Ann told me the day I talked to her about my app status.
"We have filled about 3/4 of our class at this point."

yeah I'm pretty sure that anyone who has received an acceptance letter is considered a part of that 75%... any of those people can still back out before the may deadline, so that's probably where the waitlist comes in. with the 25% open spots they have left, they are probably focusing giving a chance to the late in-state applicants first, so it's just a waiting game

I am sure you guys saw the other thread about WVU, anyway, do you know if it is true that last year WVU interviewed 140 OOS applicants and accepted 85 of them? Those are great odds, just wondering if you guys had heard anything similar.

Thought I would post here since it seems to be the more frequently visited thread.

I was also wondering....why hasn't anyone who's gotten in this year started a WVU 2011 thread in the Allopathic Class Threads forums?

probably because most of the people on this forum are more waitlist and less acceptance... me included.

Here is what Beth said when I emailed her about the 75% figure:

What is means is that we have sent out acceptance letters to 75% of the
slots, leaving 25% of them still open and will not be filled until after
our March 13th Admissions Committee Meeting in compliance to the AMCAS
March 15th roster date. This does not mean that this is the class we
will be starting school with in August as we will have deferrals and
withdrawals throughout the summer.
Thank you,
Beth Ann McCormick

I'm still having a hard time figuring out exactly what she's saying. Does she mean that future letters are not going to be sent out until after Mar 13?

I can't figure out what she means either. It does sound like she's saying they aren't planning on making a decision on any of those 25% left until March 13th. But by slots, does she mean the 110 spots in the class, or do they send out extra acceptances and these are included in the term "slots"? Well, if they are waiting until March 13th, there's gonna be a bunch of us freaking out at the end of that week hoping for a GOOD letter. Do you suppose then they will send out rejections to some of the current waitlist people at that point? And then true waitlist letters to others?

This is driving me nuts...I just want to go to WVU, so let me in already!

OK, I just talked to Beth Ann on the phone. She confirmed that no letters will be sent out until after March 13th, and that last Friday was the most recent day anything was sent out.

it's possible they want to wait until March 13th in order to evaluate everyone all at once (not sure how much longer they are interviewing). according to AAMC guidelines... "By March 30 of the matriculation year, each school have issued a number of offers of acceptance at least equal to the expected number of students in its first-year entering class and have reported those acceptance actions to the AAMC Section for Medical School Application Services."

That says March 30, so maybe WVU set their own deadline of March 15 to issue that number of acceptances so they can then report it by the 30th.

if march 15th is the "deadline"...is that the day all accepted people have to pay the deposit or withdraw by?

yeah, WVU requires you to pay the deposit within 2 weeks of receiving the acceptance letter to hold the spot. it can be refunded before May 15. the letter also says to make a final decision by May 1 (I'm guessing they say that so they have time to send the deposit back by the 15th).

i guess...the countdown to March 13th has started!

26 more days!
....yes, i am very desparate to hear from WVU

Just so that everyone is absolutely clear on what's going on:

The Admissions Committee meets every Tuesday to discuss applicants. It
is the Dean's Committee that does not meet regularly and decides who,
when, and if they will remove anyone off the listing for acceptance. If
they decide not to meet, they will not meet. They have decided to wait
until after the March 13th meeting and before the March 15th AMCAS
deadline to make final decisions on the last slots we have. After that
it will be until August that you could possibly be taken off the list
whether by dismissal or acceptance.
Thank you,
Beth Ann McCormick

From what I know, about 100 people have been accepted at this point. I also know at least a few people from those accepted that will withdrawal in order to attend other medical schools. So that 75 percent may be a little higher at this point, but that percentage includes everyone that has been accepted - not necessarily who has committed.

How do you know this?

last year (class of 2010), the exact numbers for OOS applicants were as follows:

1028 males applied, 122 of those interviewed, and 27 ended up as members of the class

805 females applied, 62 of those interviewed, and 13 ended up as members of the class

for in-state here are the figures:

109 males applied, 76 of those interviewed, and 49 became members of the class

95 females applied, 53 of those interviewed, and 21 became members of the class

that should add up to 110 total people in the class

I don't think that is correct. I've also heard 95% of the class is instate residents, but that's also false (at least for last year). From the pamphlet WVU gave me after turning in my secondary, it stated that only 40 of the 184 interviewees from out of state were accepted. This was out of a total class size of 110.

Hope this helps...

Actually, although it is true that they prefer WV residents, I am sure they accepted more than those 40 OOS students. I have the same pamphlet, and it says that 40 people became members of the class, but that doesn't necessarily mean that only 40 were accepted...they could have accepted more and people could have turned down the offer in the process.
I think people OOS will find this might be an "easier" school to get into OOS because WV is such a small state anyway, so the number of WV applicants is smaller compared the amount to other state schools from their own residents.
They try to keep it pretty close to the pamphlet (36% of the class of 2010 is OOS)... if there are more qualified state residents, that number would probably be lower, but we just don't have that many applicants from WV in the first place (204 total applications last year compared to 1833 OOS applications).

if my memory serves me correctly, they accept 85 OOS for about 40 slots in the end which translates into them accepting slightly more than half their OOS interviews...

I am an instate applicate, got waitlisted. However, it says that they were favorably impressed by my application. Did anybody's reply also say that?

Mine said the same, I am OOS, interviewed Jan 29th, got the letter about a week and a half later...have everyone's waitlist letters said this?

yes...mine said the same thing.

I interviewed on Feb 1st

That's certainly odd. I interviewed the day before you and I live in Morgantown and I've received nothing....dammit the suspense is killing me. Also Climber, if you don't mind could you please post your GPA/MCAT?

vector,

if i were you...i would call BethAnn and ask her the status of the app.

Good idea. I just called her and she told me that my application hasn't even been reviewed by the tuesday admissions committee. I asked her if the admissions committee had a backlog of people they were discussing and she said yes. How is it possible for climber who interviewed the day after me to already have a letter when some sort of backlog exists?

my guess is that your file was towards the bottom of the stack and climber's file was towards the top of the stack and when the tuesday committee met...they didn't reach your file....again it's just my guess!

You may very well be right, and if you are, it really pisses me off that they wouldn't sort the applicant files chronologically.

vector,

although it's hard to do....hang in there! next tuesday will come!

This would make me more optimistic if it wasn't for the fact that three tuesdays have already passed since I interviewed...but hey, there's not really anything I can do and getting worked up about it isn't gonna help.

Vector,

Not to make you more upset about the process, but didn't we establish that they won't be accepting anyone until their March 13th meeting? So maybe even if you hear something in the next week or two it should merely be a waitlist letter because they are holding everyone until then? Maybe I was confused about the March 13th meeting conversation, but it seems like hoping for a positive response before then isn't worth the stress. I am currently wishing the days away until mid-March in the hopes that they come to their senses and accept me.
😀

Good Luck to you!

jus wondering if we were waitlisted, is their watilist ranked? could we possibly call and find out where on the waitlist we are?

from what they told me last year...the waitlist is not ranked. not sure if they changed it this year or not....but most likely not.

how's everyone holding up? haven't heard from anyone in a while

hanging in there!

I'm trying to hang in there, too....and hoping March is my month...in fact, hoping it's the month for all of us on here.

Found out that two other people who interviewed on the same day as me (Jan 31st) were waitlisted the very next day. I'm hoping the fact that I wasn't waitlisted also is good news...

Edit: Well, looks like no news wasn't necessarily good news. I also found out today that my application wasn't complete until just now (I was still taking Orgo 2 last semester when I was submitting my application and they just now got my grades). I even asked in early January if I should send in my transcript from last semester and was told no, and I also notified my interviewers of my last semester grades. Beth Ann says I'm going in front of the committee on Tuesday. Wish me luck.
