Day 5 Write up
Act 1, Scene 10: Stealing to Save a Life?
We are going to step back from the story for a second for me to ask you a question, an age-old question. If your little brother or little sister, or if you have children, your son or daughter, was starving, would you steal food to feed them? Obviously, there is an exhaustive list of other things that could be done first, but if you were at the point where stealing was your only option would you do it? If you would do it, would that make you a criminal?
When the scene comes back into focus, we are outside a gate outpost with two guards guarding the gate. If one were to head in a straight line from Bilundeam to Bigantria, they would pass right through the nation or Uropt. And due to the fact that the Princess has a strong ally there, that is where they decided to head. To get there, they must head through a gated outpost, a tram ride, and then a short walk to Uropt. Which leads them to this scenario.
Ris walks up to the two guards, a folded very large knapsack hurled over his shoulders. “Good morning gentleman, I seek passage into the great city of Uropt, I have business with a nobleman there.”
“Heh, they told us to be on the look out for a knight with a girl, says he kidnapped the girl from the castle in Bilundeam. Care to tell us what’s in that knapsack?”
“I would be happy to show you.” He opens the knapsack and the wreak of Rijaavl pickles started seeping out. “They are my absolute favorite, I physically can’t start my day out without having one or two of these bad boys.” He pops a bite into his mouth. “Would either of you fine gentleman like one or two?”
“Ugh that smell! No, close that knapsack at once. I can never understand you locals actually liking those disgusting things. Proceed through the gate, the tram is at the end of the pathway.”
The knight popped the knapsack back to being closed, and continued through the now opened gate. A mumbling came from the bag: “Where should I get out, I may die from this horrid smell if I stay in here much longer.”
“It’s okay princess, I see an alleyway that I can let you down in, if you just give me….”
“HALT” The guard from before I had walked out of the gate and was yelling in the direction of the knight. The knight placed a hand on his sword, worried about what he may next have to do.
“Come back to me.” Ris walked slowly towards him. When he got within a few feet the guard yelled, “That’s close enough, I don’t need you getting that stench on me again. You need a gate pass to take the tram. I am dropping your gate pass here. Wait until I am back through the gate to pick it up, can’t risk smelling like those danged pickles for the next week.
The guard walked back to the other side of the gate, and Ris picked up the ticket. They walked towards the alleyway with opening on both sides, and he placed the knapsack down, and untied it. “I am going to keep watch princess, while you get out of there.” The knight ran to the side of they alleyway they had come from.
The princess emerged from the knapsack, covered in pickle juice. She shuffled through her bag and found that thankfully, the juices had not penetrated her bag, leaving her changes of clothes intact. She peered towards Ris, who was facing away from her. “I can change quickly without anyone noticing” she thought to herself.
“hmmm, no one seems to be heading in our direction from this way, maybe it’s best I check the other direction.”
Ris turns around and travels at a light jog to the other side of the alleyway, she passes the princess, not noticing her on the way over.
“RIS!”
The knight turns around. “Close your eyes!” the princess yelled at him. He frantically brought his hand up towards his face to cover his eyes, smacking himself in the face, and knocking himself back. Within moments, the princess was once again properly clothed, and Ris was told to open his eyes. Ris’s face was beat red when he finally removed his hands.
“So umm…. We should get moving towards the tram.”
“Yes, yes we should. But wait a moment Ris. You cannot be calling me princess any longer. Not here not anymore. You must refer to me by the name I have given myself. I have to stay in disguise.”
“I understand, princ….. I mean… yeah..”
They walked over to the tram and got on board. The tram was a short trip, and the walk to Uropt from there an even shorter trip. The walked into the town, and immediately bumped into two familiar faces.
“You two scoundrels dare show your face around us!” Ris grabbed his sword
“Enough Ris!” The princess went over and hugged the one in the leather jacket. “It’s good to see you both again. What brings you to Uropt?”
“It’s our bro, he’s….”
“We know. Kailvan had vowed to find some way to help, and I promised him we would.”
“Funny you should say that, we have found a way. There’s a very rare medicine, that a shopkeeper here keeps in their special storage. If we could get it, we could save him.”
“We can pool our money, I bet we can…”
“No dear, it’s not a matter of money. The shopkeeper will not part with it. We have already tried valiant routes. We unfortunately must resort to the less valiant ones.”
“STEAL it. That’s what you mean. I shall not allow this.” Ris drew his sword.
“Ris for the love of everything, you will put away your sword this instant. That is an order.” The knight put his sword away. “Maybe you forget that had Emp not come along, we would be wondering with no way of knowing where north or south is, let alone being able to plan our way to Bilundeam. But no, you have to be a pig headed moral compass who believes there is only one right way, and its black and white. Well Guess what, IT’S NOT.” The princess was screaming at this point, and all passerbys had moved to a “safe” distance. “Maybe, just once, you can get off your pious horse, and do the right thing, even if it doesn’t fit into your narrow sense of what could be right.” The princess was absolutely fuming
“I am sorry, your highness.”
“Sorry, friends, how can I help you get the medicine?”
“We plan to take it at night fall. The shopkeeper’s place is located on it’s own dock, inaccessible from land. We must take a boat there. We shall use the dock below the hotel to get there.”
“I shall see you at nightfall.” The princess departed westward with the knight follow suit while the remainder of the people headed to the east.
-------------
Kailvan had finally made it to the entrance of the cavern. That is when the presence appeared in front of him.
“I will be taking the princess from you all now.”
“Dude, I don’t know who you are or what your problem is, but we don’t even know where the princess is.”
Dark Shuffle roared out, “AS I SAID, I WILL BE TAKING THE PRINCESS NOW. AND IF YOU DON’T…”
Lightning collided with the wizards face. Immediately Keke turned the lightning into ice, freezing him in place. The girl in purple armour threw a spear straight through the dark wizard’s face, and Kailvan ran up and drove two daggers straight through where the dark wizards heart should be. All of the physical strikes yielded a pouring out of smog. But none seemed to be fatal. Maybe, just maybe the dark wizard was weakened, but he also seemed empowered from the struggle.
In any event, he was gone in a flash, before anyone could put a finishing blow on the dark wizard.
