I kinda stole this from a pre-pharmer in the Pre-Pharmacy threads so my apologies in advance, but I thought it would be of more importance here...

http://education.yahoo.net/degrees/articles/featured_fifty_dollar_an_hour_earning_power.html

Sooo... basically we're getting our Pharm D's while eating cereal and watching Maury and Judge Judy at home online according to this article... I was looking for a contact so I could immediately correct them. Couldn't find one though.

Yeah that came up TWICE as the main story on my Yahoo. All I could do was laugh and show some of my buddies --- love how 'easy' it is, just go to college and take some of the most notoriously tough classes and just apply and there you go! $50/hour! lol There's going to be a lot of disappointed people by the time they get around to applying and figuring out that that 'online degree' is not exactly the easiest thing to obtain, lol.

Yeah I saw that article...what a bunch of garbage. BUT, I'm just imagining a bunch of lazy ass daytime TV couch potatoes putting forth some effort into looking at programs.

I wonder how many of the would actually hit ochem as a prereq and get their asses kicked.

But yeah, doesn't help pharmacy PR at all. Grrreat. Clare Kaufman is an idiot freelance writer. Hope that shows up in a google search! haha, she writes for hotjobs and writes about education and business topics.

from the article:

"A licensed pharmacist holds a Doctor of Pharmacy degree. The qualification, which has replaced the bachelor's degree in Pharmacy, is much more accessible than a medical or doctoral degree."

uhhh.... it is a doctoral degree. ...dumb@$$

I feel like these are the type of people getting in these days. Just my observation since I have been out...

We can argue this all day, but I find it funny that many if not all of the schools where I currently live dont even require a thesis or research project. My school required EVERYONE to do a research project and write a manuscript. Something I think should be required for any "doctorate" degree.

Pharm.D. is not a Ph.D. Pharm.D., JD, DDS, MD, DO, OD, and DVM are professional doctorate degrees which do not require research or thesis.

Ph.D. is an advanced academic degree which usually involves research and teaching.

well it's obvious this lady didn't do any research except playing the salary amount card.
1. Pharm. D. is a doctorate (duh)
2. um...you have to get accepted into an accredited Pharmacy school in order to obtain this doctorate (duh, not some online courses!).
3. Plus, it looks like the 2 yr pre-pharm track may not exist long in the future, (i mean they did away with the bachelors for a doctorate), some schools are going to require a bachelors for entrance.

Anyways, all those degrees that can be easily obtained by an online university may not even be validated by the state you live in (happened to a girl who obtain an teaching degree through Phoenix University and the state of NY where she lives does not accept it. The school knew about the state's regulation and she got ripped off. It was on the news as a scandal.). So readers be wary of articles like this!

I had no idea there were online PharmD programs. That is a shame, you guys should nip that in the bud.

Theres only two or three... and we have been trying for a while. However its not completely online. The students have to go to campus for labs among other things.

I couldn't image a tough program like PharmD being completed online while working as a tech like the yahoo article says. Those yahoo finance articles are total garbage.

Clare Kaufman is a bad journalist. I hope she googles herself and comes across this.

Pharmacy Practice *definitely* has a PR problem.

Most people don't know anything about the profession, and what they do know is total bull**** & misconceptions.

Even other healthcare professionals have misconceptions about the full extent of what a pharmacist can do. I've heard a doctor refer to our hospital pharmacists as "those people downstairs" while unknowingly talking to one of our pharmacists.

I didn't know that either... I thought the only online programs were the ones for R. Ph to get their Pharm D's....(And I do know that that one is at University of Florida)

Does anyone know the online pharmacy programs?

The University of Florida one is a full fledged PharmD one where it is not completely online. Group assignments and tests are still taken within the locale of the campus a student is assigned so moving is still required.

Creighton University has a full online PharmD program. You have to go to Nebraska for like a week or two in the summer to do labs. The test are proctored by someone you know. I checked into it when I was deciding which pharmacy schools to apply to and learned alot about the program. They actually watch the lectures online. They take their test at the same time that the campus students take their test, so there is no time to fall behind. It sounded like a great program for individuals unable to relocate.

HTH

Why is everyone scoffing at $100k or $50/hr anyway? Going rate in southern California is like $55+/hr. I know it's a pricey area but pharmacist salaries don't vary more than 5%'ish nationwide do they?

The variance in pay is also reflective of standard of living.

Well, I make $43...UMPC in Pittsburgh starts you out at $36...the position my wife is about to take starts at about $40...of course, I can buy a 2500 sq ft home for like $150k...

Check it out, another idiot writing about pharmacy.

http://hotjobs.yahoo.com/career-articles-the_hottest_40_an_hour_careers-838

Karl Fendelander is an idiot freelance writer.

quote:
"Two years of study is all that's needed to be accepted to a number of pharmacy schools. A bachelor's degree gets you to the important part: a pharmacist license. All pharmacists must become licensed to practice."

"Bachelor's degree" is hyperlinked to a site with...yup, online universities like Univ. of Phoenix! Dumb dumb dumb...I need to stop reading these yahoo articles.
