I got accepted to my first choice school--CCOM! I was very surprised to get the message on my answering machine. They were saying that they are sending out all the official stuff next week. Interesting. I was expecting to have to wait for the notification via snail mail. Anyone else got a call? I interviewed there on 10/10.

Congratulations!!!

You'll really love it hear. It's a great program and a great campus. I'm sure you'll have tons of questions, as did I, so feel free to ask away!

Whoops...I hope a moderator fixes this. I meant to have the subject be "Yay!" I have no idea why it says CCOM Class of 2008. I meant that for my other post, which I see did make it on the forum. My computer did lock up while I was doing this, so maybe that's what happened. 😕

Anyway....thank you UCLA-tech for the congrats. I liked the school right away before the interview day even started. It looks like an awesome atmosphere. I do have a couple (for now) questions for you: Are you living on campus? How do you feel about the quarter system? I'm sure I'll have more later! 😛

Lari-
I'll answer your questions for now - anything to take a break from histo. I live on campus, and so does Kristopher (SM-UCLA). I personally like living on campus because it's very convenient and you get to meet a lot of people and spend time with other people rather than leaving every night. About the quarter system, it was new to me coming here - I was used to semesters. I really don't think there is much of a difference, except that we start later than most and classes that you don't like (histo) are over in 10 weeks.

Congrats on your acceptance and feel free to ask any other questions. It's a great school.

I completely agree with Brian. Thanks Brian!😀

Congratulations Lari!! I just got accepted on Friday (10-17-03). This is going to be great, I can not wait. My brother is currently an MS-I at CCOM, and trust me, he loves it, as will we I'm sure. The campus is great, and from the people I've met, so are the students and faculty. Once again Congrats, and see ya next fall!

Hi Noah!
Nice to "meet" you on this forum. I'm looking forward to seeing you in person later. I started a thread with the same subject on the Osteopathic forum. I'm confused why the same subject title went on this forum (I meant just "Yay!"), but my computer froze so maybe that has something to do with it.

Lari

Congrats to all accepted at CCOM.

Lari29 - Congrats!!! You can go to your original post and click on edit at the bottom right hand side of your post and fix the words you don't want. It is next to quote button.

Have fun in Chicago!!

yeah so like...i've been reading your posts and wondering...crap did i not get in?

how come they called you guys and not me?!

so i called today and they said i was accepted...boo to the selective phone calls!😕

anyway looks like i'm headed off to chi town next year =)

Well, who cares about the phone call, you're in, that is all that matters now. But, I understand what you're saying. But hey, forget that and just enjoy the acceptance. Congrats once again!

haha yeah i'm not upset about the phone calls, i'm kind of just being facetious...i'm pretty happy now. i feel like a weight is off my chest.

lari, how are those hamsters doing? =)

Slickness,

Well like this forum often has this subject come up, each person finds their own niche as to why they like a certain school over another. I'm kind of biased in a way because I am originally from the Midwest. I went to high school there, went to college there, and though I made a lot of friends in CA after my parents moved to San Diego, and CA is awesome no doubt - especially So Cal, I still like the midwest attitude there. It's traditional, laid back, beautiful fall, four seasons...etc.

But ok as for med school purposes, every DO school I went to has great people - they're all nice, they're all friendly, and the student body all seem really conducive to helping one another succeed. As for CCOM, I like it because it's a college campus type atmosphere. It's a campus with big lawns, really nice on campus housing, good facilities, and it's near a big bustling city. There's no smog and to get from place to place, the traffic is NOWHERE near as bad at it is in LA.

As for clinicals, CCOM has some great places. Chicago itself is a huge hub of awesome hospitals - cook county, rush, loyola, northwestern - and you have opportunities to do your rotations at these places. A lot of CCOM graduates are listed in the residency positions at these hospitals too. CCOM is pretty famous nationwide...not saying the rest aren't but yeah, CCOM has a good hold in that region therefore I felt it was easier to get a residency at one of the area hospitals. That and it's always been somewhat of a silly whim of mine to rotate or work at Cook County Hospital since ER came out lol.

Touro and COMP have good facilities...really they do - but the outside of them don't really appeal to me, and I didn't get a good vibe at those schools. The students kinda seemed slackerish to me (my tour guides were like...oh I don't think grades matter, I think as long as I got a good personality I'll make a great doctor - which is in part true but I think everyone should still do their best). As for Touro, it's new and their clinicals you have to set up as opposed to CCOM which has its own hospital. Plus honestly Vallejo isn't that pretty - but it's close to SF so that kinda makes up for it. My dad is a clinical adjunct professor at COMP so I'm not knockin' it, but alas to each their own. Good luck =)

one last thing - CCOM had some beautiful girls! haha ok jk, well partially kidding. =)

NDESTRUKT,
I didn't turn in my secondary to CCOM but now I wish I had. Oh well, good luck at CCOM.

hey slickness,

but the thing is you're still gonna get a good education no matter where you go, so don't feel like you've lost out on anything - if anything you've passed the rights of passage to getting into school...it's what you make of it regardless of where you go. though i don't like western, one of the people i've looked up to in my life is a lady that is a DO from there - she's an oncologist with my dad and is on the faculty of USC med school...so yeah...it's what you make of it...best of luck to you, sir!

hey slickness.......

i'm from so cal.....born and raised. I have never lived outside of there until now. I absolutely love this school. ndestrukt pretty much summed it up. This school has a great campus with great clinical rotations. the teaching is also excellent and the students are great.

i also was not crazy about the comp and touro. i didn't apply to touro because i don't like vallejo, and i was really worried about the clinical structure. As far as comp, i had similar feelings too as ndestrukt. the students and facilities were fine, but the campus was depressing, and once again, there clinicals aren't stellar. there are hospitals that i've never heard of that they do rotations out of. and i remember hearing during my interview there that you have to set-up your own clinical rotations.

anyway....those were just my own personal feeling about the schools. i am extremely pleased with CCOM, and i'm writing this to tell you that it's definitely not too late to send in a secondary. i didn't even submit my aacomas last year until halloween.

good luck to you!

SM-UCLA tech,

Thanks for the info. Although CCOM is probably a great school, I still would like to go to COMP. I am interested in going into family practice, and COMP graduates are in several family practice allopathic residencies in southern CA including USC, Loma Linda, and UCLA.

Also, the DO who I shadowed was an alumnus of COMP and he only had good things to say about the school. I really liked the facilities even though the neighborhood was kind of bad. Plus I live 30 minutes away from the school which biases my decision a bit.

those are all excellent reasons......i personally know the attending of the ucla family practice residency........they have two interns this year who are d.o.'s and they have nothing but good things to say about osteopathic students. my understanding was that those students were from touro though.....i'm not sure.

but let me warn you, the ucla residency used to be two separate programs. one being LKC and the other ucla. they merged last year and subsequently the ranking of the residency went to &$&#. the LKC program was extremely well regarded and ucla's was pretty low ranked. just thought you should know that.

good luck to you with COMP....i'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

the pomona neighborhood around COMP isn't really that bad...seriously - that is a safe area. It looks old and run down but it's not a bad area nor is it the ghetto.

lari, how are those hamsters doing? =)

Hey Jonathan! Congrats on the acceptance! Looks like we'll see each other this next fall. By the way, they are doing fine. One was sick last week, but antibiotics have made him all better. 🙂 Yes, I'm a freak. 😛
