I'm planning to graduate Spring 2013...Take MCAT in July of that summer...and apply as soon as possible after that. First off, is that a good plan?

Also, is there any classes that I could take during my year "off" that would better prepare me for my first year of med school?

Thanks!

If you have time to study, take the MCAT earlier (probably May) and apply as soon as you can in June.. I don't know what kind of applicant you are but applying early never hurt anybody..

on the other hand, i disagree and think it's beneficial for 99% of applicants to take some time off between college and med school.

OP - do something you're interested in. don't just do things to get into med school.

Depends. Does your GPA need some help? If so, taking more classes might be your best bet. If not, you could take the opportunity to get some life experience (whatever that means) with a job, volunteer organization, etc.

👍 Why wait until July to take the MCAT?

If you are really heart set on taking a year off, then do a masters program for 1 year and take med school courses. Do well, and depending on your school, you may be able to transfer credits (my state school allows this). kinda like AP credits from high school. If u don't do well enough to transfer credits, oh well so be it. if you end up going to your state school, then you will have already seen the material once and will be ready to ace it.

Try and take the MCAT as early as possible, get it out of the way do well, and enjoy the rest of your life not having to worry about it.

NOTE: Ideally, try to not take a year off, finish early, and take the mcat and matriculate directly from college into med school. If you cant do this, consider what i wrote above.

If you do take time off after college and get a real job (not living with mommy and daddy and working 15 hours a week) then you'll be surprised at how much you mature and you should appreciate school that much more.
