This isn't an average problem, just another average problem:idea:

Find the average of the following list of three weights: 3lb.2oz, 4lb. 6oz., and 9lb.10oz.

A) 5lb.6oz
B) 6lb. 6 1/3oz.
C) 5lb. 11 1/3 oz.
D) 5lb. 39 1/3oz.
E) 8lb. 9oz.

The answer is c

uughh math...can someone explain this?

i'm gonna take a crack at it. there's more than one way to approach this problem but here's the one i took: average the pounds and ounces separately. the three weights sum to 17 lb. 2 oz. also, keep in mind that 1 lb. = 16 oz.

for the 17 lb. part, you get (17 lb / 3) = 5 2/3 lb; the 2/3 lb part can be converted to 32/3 oz (using 2/3 lb * 16 oz/lb)

now that you average the 2 oz. by part by diving by 3 from earlier and get 2/3 oz.

ok, so you got 5 lb. + 32/3 oz + 2/3 oz, which is 5 lb 34/3 oz = 5 lb. 11 1/3 oz.
