You know what really grinds my gears?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
You know what really grinds my gears? Ignorance. I hate it when people want to go to med school because they think it's like Grey's Anatomy. There are some people in the pre med forums that think they'll be saving lives on a daily basis. The vast, vast, majority of all medical specialties do not save lives on a daily basis.

Maybe we'll have just as much ignorance in "our world" of dentistry when "Private Practice: Dental Edition" premieres next fall.

Depends on your definition.

FM will easily save lives routinely. You see all manner of life threatening illness.

EM goes without saying

IM will very often treat or diagnose acute conditions that would otherwise be fatal.
Nearly every sub specialty has acute cases.

OB... well the mortality rate for births has dropped substantially with the advent of modern medicine.

Surgery: general does life saving GI corrections, or abscess debridement. Plenty of sub specialties here too.

Even psych will deal with suicidal patients.

Maybe derm doesn't actually save anyone.... but hey that isn't the point there.

No, it isn't as dramatic or exciting as greys anatomy portrays it, but most doctors will certainly save someone's life and much more than likely it will be many "someones". Maybe you just need a new gearbox if it grinds so easily . Its a little silly to be bothered by people being excited about something they are passionate about and talking about it amongst those with similar interests.

What really grinds my gears are dental assistants who think they know it all.

I told a dental assistant that I would not becoming the following day because I had my DAT. To which she replied, "Ohhh just know the vocabulary and you will do fine."
I just nodded my head and said, "Yup that is all there is to it."

This is the exact assistant that continuously told me that she would be probably be applying to dental school the following year b/c she already knew how to do all the procedures and just needed to get her license...

I asked her if she had a Bachelor's degree or even the pre-reqs to which she said "Once you become a dental assistant you don't have to do all of that."

haha i used to work with an assistant that was constantly criticizing me. i had started shadowing at the place and they offered me a position to kind of assist wherever was needed. i learned to do stuff both in the front and back, but obviously i was not as good as her since she'd been doing it for 15 years. but on top of being super critical about how my x-rays were not perfect or things like that, she would always have lovely little insights like this! i was complaining about how much work orgo was and she would pipe in how she'd have no problem memorizing everything. or when i was first learning how to set up for some procedures, i would write everything down. and she'd tell me i could never succeed in dental school if i needed notes. like, im sure everyone in dental school remembers everything the first time they hear it.

We're just having some fun. This thread is mostly just horsing around, in my mind anyway. People could try to say dentists save lives too by detecting oral cancer before a physician does because we see our patients more. But I've never been about starting wars. In fact, I made a post the other day on the med forum that praised all of you that are going into medicine because they're passionate about it, just like you stated here. 👍

LOL in one of my lit classes, everyone was going on and on about Grey's Anatomy and how it gave them a 'real look' at what it was like to be a Doctor. Me and my friend (A pre-med) were rolling our eyes.

I think NDPitch was talking about a really specific type of person, someone that doesn't actually know much about medicine kind of what I talked about ^^, not like every pre-med ever. No need to get defensive, this thread is just for having fun. :d

You know what really grinds my gears? People who are rude and obnoxious on SDN. Worst is, when they try to tell somebody else off, by hiding behind their computer, for something stupid, when they've done asked worse themselves! If you think a person's question is stupid, DON'T ANSWER IT! However, when they ask a stupid question, they expect the entire SDN population to answer it!

Either be nice, or don't respond at all. Seriously, this was taught in pre-school, not even kindergarten...

Oh and for everybody who was talking about characters being dentists in TV shows, one of the characters in Suburgatory is a dentist. My mom told me to watch a clip, it was actually kind of funny. And there was this show from 2007-2008 called Carpoolers, Jerry O'Connell's character was a dentist and he was a P I M P. Carpoolers was pretty funny, too. 🙂

Saying that the MCAT is harder than the DAT is not a personal attack or slight but because people today are so sensitive it's perceived as one; on the same note I've read several posts where people say that dental school is harder than med school, which I think is true.

God that would irk me

I've read several posts where people say that dental school is harder than med school, which I think is true.

I think that's true at some schools, but maybe not all. For example, at UConn and some other schools, dental students spend two years in the medical school curriculum, and at the same time take dental classes. :scared:

you know what grinds my gears??

Nerds on this website.

YESSS!!! This drives me crazy. People do this all the time in my Med Micro class. I think that most of the time they are just trying to impress the professor. Just google that crap, or go to office hours and ask your random question. It is really pointless in my Med Micro class especially because the professor is foreign and doesn't ever really understand what they are asking anyways.

That's hilarious! I have one of those in my Med Myco class. She drives me (and I assume the professor) crazy! Every other five minutes she'll have her hand up. The worst part, the question usually has to do with cullinary fungus, not so medically pertinent.

You know what irks me? Lab techs and Dental Hygienists that think they can be dentists or could have been a dentist and are still considering going to dental school.

I'm always think, "if you can do then you should." I'm pretty sure once they hit the books they'll realized they're way over their head.

Sorry, but I completely disagree with this. My wife is a hygienist and is seriously considering going to med school. I have a friend who is a D2 who was originally a hygienist. So... Yah, they can do it if they want to. Don't knock them because they have aspirations of change.

I never said its impossible, but they should do it if they want. I've heard it 100 times and I've know only one person who actually did it. You know one person as well(until your wife changes then it won't be two.) You can disagree just because you know few people, but the generalization still holds some truth. Not everyone can do something because they want to. Not everyone has the capacity. I'll never be a nuclear physicist even if I spent 100 years in school. I'm just not capable.

I'm glad people want to change but actions speak louder than words, and MOST people just speak without realizing what it takes. Thats all I'm saying. I really hope your wife goes to Med school. That'd be two doctors in the house.

What also grinds my gears is when someone (like me) who scores very well on the DAT and then feels really disappointed they didn't get perfection.

That's a pretty bold statement. There are many reasons they may have gone into Hygiene or Assisting besides "not being smart enough". Whose to say you are above them and once you hit the books you won't have a problem? I know this is just a light hearted thread but that was so rude!!

What I meant is that its alot harder than I could ever imagine. I'm pretty sure I'm way over my head when I start, but I'm still going to try to make it through. And if I fail at least I gave it all I have, instead of telling myself I can get be a dentist too, and never do anything about it. That's all I was saying.

Ok I see what you mean, I read it the other way 👍

I met Michael Jordan when I was in high school. He said to me, "Its okay to fail. I can accept failure. But I can't accept "not trying". Look at my baseball career". And I never forgot that.

People saying I'm "smart enough" to go to med school and should take that route. Uh, I dunno... Maybe I've chosen this career because I WANT to be a dentist?!

I TA a few classes and freshmen and sophomores tell me this all the time. Like its supposed to be a compliment i guess??? but its actually insulting because they're basically like why on earth would u wanna be a dentist??

I don't know if it's because I'm a female or because the majority of the population doesn't know what they are talking about but....what really grinds my gears is when I tell someone I'm going to dental school and they nod and say congratulations. Then 5-10 min later they say " So you are going to be a hygienist?" or "So you are going to be a REAL dentist?" ummm yeah I don't think I would spend 4 years in school to be a fake dentist.

Even one of the dentists I shadowed about halfway through the day asked me if I was going to hygiene school. Seriously? Why am I following you around then?

I get that all the time plus plenty of these: 🙄. I've also gotten the very interesting statement of: "Well dentistry isn't that intellectually stimulating, so someone like you will be really bored with it pretty soon after you start practicing. You should reconsider medicine."

It's as if they don't think I can make an educated decision about what I want and/or that shadowing professionals is enough to see what I like, because obviously they know better.

It really seems like almost every single person in my life does not support my decision to do dentistry over medicine. Ugh.

LMAO. Sounds like you haven't done clerkships yet.

FM just refers out any real issues, including non life-threatening ones.

EM is the same as FM, just with a shorter timeline. "quick, call the specialist".

IM is low speed as well. The only life you save is the code on the 90 year old guy who changes his advance directive to fatally code the next day.

OB - You'll save some lives here, probably more than surgery.

Surgery - Most is just scheduled procedures. Trauma definitely is serious stuff. Same for CV and especially neurosurgery.

Psych - You just ask every patient every day if they're thinking about killing themselves...soon you want to kill yourself... If anything happens you have completely forgotten all real medicine, as have all psych nurses.

Derm - melanoma is serious biz (but not emergent), otherwise just a laid back job.

Of course it's always good to catch things, but medicine moves a lot slower than dentistry. Surgery/Interventional fields can be exciting, otherwise the majority of MD's talk and write notes all day.

Oh yeah, med students who expect to save lives regularly grind my gears. 🙂

As a tutor, and a pretty damn good one at that, I've had so many of my students balk at my decision to pursue dentistry. They are always saying "you should be a computer engineer" because I am a crazy techie. Worse yet, when they find out my sibling is pursuing neurosurgery, they immediately say "You should do that instead of dealing with people's teeth" and raucous laughter ensues at the hilarity.

These statements are supposed to be complimentary in nature because my dear students feel dentistry is silly. Unfortunately have no idea of what makes dentistry special. Most people either assume it is easy money, good life-style, plan b for medicine etc. but they all invariably fail to see that it is a stable career choice with plenty of variety requiring a diverse set of skills. These flippant statements, above all, irritate me. But I soon realize these things are being said by ignorant people who are trying to be supportive so the statements must be forgotten and the people making them must be forgiven.

P.S. You know what really grinds my gear? YOU AMERICA. **** YOU!!!!!!

You know what really grinds my gears?? When I tell people I am pursuing dental school, and then later in the convo, they ask if I have my driver's license yet and are wondering if I've been practicing my driving or parking. It's probably because I look kind of young, but you wouldn't have someone still in high school in dental school! Or at least I've never heard of these brilliant prodigies.

Also "your" and "you're" mistakes irk me. D:

Oh my gosh... this happens to me SO OFTEN !!! But it's not even like five minutes later... I tell people that I want to go to dental school and they respond, "Oh, so you're going to become a hygienist?"

One of my friends is a dentist and was riding the subway a few weeks ago. She had her scrubs on and a little boy across from her asked his mother why she was wearing those clothes. Her mother responded, "Oh, she is a nurse!" My friend was like, "No, I'm actually a dentist." And then the mother responded, "Oh, sweetie, she's a dental hygienist! She's the one who cleans your teeth!!"

:wtf:

I was also a tutor for the UW, and I got this quite a bit as well... Ushaseos pretty much nailed it - you just have to see what they are trying to say, not what they are saying lol 🙂

It irks me when people misuse "I and me" when posting pictures/statuses on Facebook.

Lol. I was shooting for something more pop-culture like this:

I like your image better though. It captures the soul of this thread perfectly!

I've got 2.

1. What really grinds my gears is when I haven't been accepted to dental school and my parents talk with their friends about what I'm doing. Or they tell me about a new school that opened up. If your friends want to know what I'm doing, tell them I'm going to be a magician or ask them to ask me. AND YES I'VE HEARD ABOUT THAT RANDOM PRIVATE SCHOOL THAT OPENED UP!

2. What really grinds my gears is also when students of easier majors or easier schools (directional state school or crappy commuter school) tell me how their GPA is a 3.97. That's great, maybe take some harder classes and learn something.

This guy!!!

You hit it on the head with this one.

What grinds my gears is people with psychology degrees getting 3.9 and getting into dental school with no other advanced bio courses on their degree.

#2... you serious?

A little bit. How would you feel if someone from North Central Washington State University told you they had a 3.97 and got into UWSOD? A comparable situation has happened to me. They also told me their DAT was significantly lower than mine. I'm not trying to troll or anything.

wow. i think a little introspection is in order on your part.

if you go through life hating on people who did better than you, you're gonna have a bad time.
