Your biggest pre-med mistake

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Am I the only one who actually had a decent pre-med advisor? 🙁

Sent from my HTC6535LVW using SDN mobile

I went to a public university and had a helpful pre-med advisor. She met with me twice a week to review my personal statement and my secondary essays, gave me some great tips on how to improve them. So no, you are not alone 🙂

Not shadowing a DO and while applying to both MD and DO schools.

Also, waiting 5 months for a MD to write me a LOR (one that I worked closely with for thousands of hours). However, I can't be completely upset by this because she was the only neurologist with her specific sub-specialty in a 100 mile radius so she was always busy with patients. In the end, I shadowed a urologist for a couple months and recieved a LOR almost immediately. Unfortunately by that time it was November and my chances for an MD schools were shot.

Made a sucky day not so sucky.

Oh, my biggest mistake? Not taking my classes seriously. Could have done better had I had the MCAT in mind from freshman year. Also, not enough research. Think I would have had a better shot at different schools if I pursued it more.

This thread is like every woulda, coulda, shoulda thought I've ever had in the past 5 years.

As a result, I've decided to force my future children to be pre-meds with no social lives who do everything "right." That way they'll be sure to achieve their (my) dreams of becoming Harvard-grad chief resident interventional neurodermatological plastic surgeons!

That's how parenting works right?

Any real gunner parent will force their kid to have at least 2 hours of controlled social interaction per day so they can kill the interview.

Also, make them memorize all the games from the NFL and NBA so they can pretend to be a fan of whatever the interviewers favorite team is.

Pledging a frat and living in the frat house for a year. It was the best experience of my life and now that I'm accepted I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world, but from a strictly pre-med perspective it was idiotic.

Eviscerated my GPA, accomplished no meaningful extracurriculars for 2 years, compromised my health doing crazy pledge crap, and took a ton of unnecessary risks.

God damn it was fun though.
what was the craziest pledge things you did?

My biggest mistake was working full-time during my post-bacc at a notoriously difficult program. Granted, I didn't have a choice (I had to eat and pay tuition), but I had to settle for B's in my pre-reqs. It haunts me; I have been ignored by so many admissions committees.

...I did get a bunch of publications out of it, though.

Craziest? Being blindfolded, duck taped to a tree, and left in the woods in the middle of the night in rural Georgia without a cell phone or wallet. Everyone had to break out of the tape and blindfolds, find all the other pledges scattered nearby, then find our way back to civilization. It was quite an experience...

You got any good stories?
