As the one who matched Yale in rads, it's a good match but certainly not on the same tier as Hopkins, Mass gen, UPenn, Duke, Mayo etc. so while still a good match, not exactly an OMG Super awesome match by any means. Overall though I'm certainly happy with most of our classes match list, I know we could technically have done better if some of my classmates ranked the overall "best/most prestigious" programs higher versus the best fit program but I can value that for certain candidates they liked the lesser known programs over the more prestigious programs. This ideology comes straight from some of my good friends who were 1000% smarter/better students (higher steps, higher class rank) than I who ranked lesser known programs much higher than the more "prestigious" programs. Take that as you will but I at least know that many of my friends could have matched at very prestigious programs but preferred location over prestige. I'm sure this is similar to other schools but I thought it was at least my obligation to acknowledge such a thing. Take this post as you will...

As the one who matched Yale in rads, it's a good match but certainly not on the same tier as Hopkins, Mass gen, UPenn, Duke, Mayo etc. so while still a good match, not exactly an OMG Super awesome match by any means.
also, radiology has become much less competitive than it once was. There were 150+ unfilled spots this year. Crazy that only a few years ago, a DO was lucky just to match in a community allo rads program...

Completely agree although for whatever reason most med students don't seem to know this...At the upper tier programs I think it's still fairly competitive but like you alluded to, middle/lower tier is not even remotely what it used it be. As a future radiologist I can only hope this changes but I generally steer clear of fortune and fates of certain specialties.

Would anyone mind posting Touro NY?

Incorrect. There have been fewer applicants than in years passed. That does not equate to less competitive. The 150 spots were all filled in soap by the high score derm, ortho, surgery, ENT folks who didn't match.

NRMP DO match rate of 79.3% - all time high. Just putting that out there.

Source?

And anyone on thoughts of how long it will be until DO students are counted as US Seniors by the NRMP vs Independent Applicants as they're considered now?

EM at Utah? That's a big deal, I don't think they've taken DOs in EM before, at least not in that past few years.

Never. I gotta think someone had some crazy connections there. Do's are specifically forbidden from rotating there, or at any of the community affiliates in SLC.

150 openings = less competitive! Rads is one of the fields where docs can sometimes struggle to find jobs they want right now.

If this is going to be a thread, let's all agree to not quote entire match lists...

Not true. They haven't accepted less qualified applicants. They will never lower their standards. Hence why the field will always have one of the highest step score average. There have just been less applicants due to the current job market. Programs don't lower their standards, they just get extremely qualified applicants elsewhere, I.e. SOAP

Who cares if it's competitive or not. The guy/girl wanted to do radiology and matched at a good program.

Our Dean said in his email that we matched at a couple of different places that had never accepted an Osteopathic graduate before.

From what I've been hearing, people seem to surprisingly be more interested in FM, IM and Psych than they have in the recent past. It's not a huge change, but my friends at MD schools seem to be seeing more people than expected aiming for the traditionally less competitive fields. I'm really curious as to why that seems to be the case, at least in regards to those schools.

Lifestyle? I think that is playing a big role these days. I know all of them work hard, but you can control your hours and take care of your own patients in those specialties.

Primary care is catching on (in my opinion) as people start realizing the need, and the social justice aspect of treating communities, rather than a narrow subset of patients. I know this was a big part of it for me.

Also, the system is being primed for PC to take a central and more prominent role in the American healthcare system in the near future.

What happens to the other 20%? That's a huge number?? That's like a carib match rate
This is just for those DO applicants that applied NRMP. As you know, plenty of DOs only apply AOA (only 2.9k applied NRMP).

I can't be certain UofU ER has never had a DO before. But they haven't since I have been watching. It's generally speaking a very DO unfriendly place from top to bottom. Anesthesia, PM&R, FM, and IM have had them in the past but even there DO's have been few and far between.

I thought about trying to do an ER rotation at the UofU this past year only to find out they won't allow DO's, and they've also locked DO's out of the community hospital ER's the residency is affiliated with.

No, the carribean match rate is much lower.

And the other 20% go to the AOA.

It was 53% for carribean graduates and 94% for USMDs seniors this year.

For whatever it's worth, I got an interview their for anesthesia program and a classmate of mine interviewed for their IM program and another interviewed for their pathology program. None of us ended up there, though.

I think the 53% was for independent applicants, which would include DO's and their 79% match rate. The numbers for Carribbean grads are probably far lower.

i.e. lowering their standards. Applicants that want it as a first choice > applicants that want it as backup to not matching elsewhere

It's under the category "U.S. Citizen Students/Graduates of International Medical Schools". If it were combined, that would mean only 300 carib grads matched.

Fair enough, I thought I'd seen the match rate for independent applicants hovered around 50% this year.

Taking a SOAPer with a 250 step 1 does not equal lowering standards. Radiology has an incredibly hard written board exam in residency. They will never lower their applicant standards to someone with a 210 step 1 just because they have fewer applicants. They will simply take the other overqualified SOAPers

I'm not sure when they are going to publish our match list...I know they haven't sent us anything yet. I have heard of some really great matches though. I think we did way better in the ACGME match than we did in the AOA one.

My point is that if the programs aren't filling, it's no longer competitive. I haven't said anything about what it takes to succeed in Rads, I honestly couldn't care less about that...

I shadowed residents at U of U over a summer and I asked them about DOs and they're like we don't have anything against DOs but it just so happens none of them ever end up here. None of them knew any DOs in the hospital.

You still have to have the stats to get interviews. Therefore, you still have to be a competitive applicant.

The residents might not have anything against them, but mark my words, there is a deep seated bias against DO's that permeates through the enitire UofU system.

That's neither here nor there, you have to be a "competitive applicant" for every field with respect to the average stats of that field.

Rads is not very competitive at the moment and those high-stat applicants you talk about are often choosing other fields.
