This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Fresno state is the financially responsible choice. St augustine has its perks such as being in san diego county and being accelerated. I would be a fool to turn down Fresno.

Doesn't their 75% first time licensure exam pass rate worry you a bit?
That means 1 in 4 dont pass the exam the first time and have to wait another half year to test again (=$ loss). I'm only asking because I am in a similar situation as you.

You are right. That is a big concern of mine as well. One of my interviewers addressed that issue. The school just graduated its first DPT class last year. She said with new DPT programs come these type of issues. She said they are researching on if they should implement changes on the curriculum or if they would change their admissions criteria. But she stated that they are completely committed to raising that number. We will see with the next few graduating classes if they numbers go up, but I was impressed with the program when I went in for the interview.

I'm from SoCal originally too! I'll let you know what I think of the campus/area when I'm there next week. I've been to Tacoma a couple times and it seems a little dumpy in my opinion, but supposedly it depends on the area you're in, and I haven't been to the part of town near the campus. I live in Bellevue right now (next to Seattle), and the housing in Tacoma looks more reasonably priced based on what I've seen on Craigslist this week
Yea, let me know! I would love to hear about all the info you got regarding the program and how the PT fascilities/campus looked. Thanks!

I live in Tacoma and it ain't dumpy. But you are right, rent is way cheaper than Seattle or Bellevue. You're really lucky to have gotten in to UPS...They are really demanding. I'm on the alternate list again. So if you want to go live somewhere less dumpy and give your spot to me that would be Aok!. 😉 But seriously, UPS beats UW. I've worked with 3 UPS graduates and live 2 minutes from the campus. They are about helping people and UW is about research.

Oh, and look for apartments/houses in the Stadium district or in the North End right around the college.

Thanks for the advice as well as I'm completely clueless to the Tacoma area! And I hope you get off that wait list! I'm surprised UPS doesn't interview as it seems most schools do. Nevertheless, as you said, it seems like a solid program and beautiful locAtion.

For those of you who are curious, and haven't seen UPS's campus, I was visiting this last weekend and it is absolutely beautiful. I have a friend who is a 2nd year there and he was able to show me around. I am 99% sure I will be attending in the fall.

Thought I would post my stats to help those in the future as i didn't have very good undergrad GPA:

Hi All - Was also accepted to UPS and will be at the reception next Thursday. Right now it's pretty much at the top of my list, so there's a really good chance I'll be starting classes in the fall! Looking forward to meeting others at the reception.

When were you rejected from Temple? I've already put my deposit in for MGH, but there were some mix ups with Temple and I haven't a thing from them to date.

They made all of their acceptances around middle of november. I had an interview there and had to schedule a phone interview for traveling issues and they told me that they're giving spots to the students that can show up in person and that I might not have an interview because spots will most likely be filled before they will schedule a phone interview with me. Didn't make any sense but it opened better doors for me in the end.

I was rejected from Temple in December 2014, applying for the class that started in 2015, so maybe it's a good sign you haven't heard anything yet? Best of luck!!

U P D A T E 2/13:
THE BIG ACCEPTANCE. A few rejections and an interview.
This is my third time applying in-state to the Washington schools. Not surprisingly, I was rejected by UPS and Eastern earlier this month. I was also offered an interview with the University of the Pacific, which I had declined because I had already accepted my offer for Utah and submitted my deposit. And yesterday, I finally heard back from the University of Washington. Didn't make the wait-list (again). No, in fact... I GOT IN!!!! *tears of every emotion imaginable*

So this means two things. First, I will have just lost my $750 deposit to the University of Utah. And second (and most important to others who may be reading this and have also applied to Utah), this means that another spot will be available at the University of Utah. I realize that Utah is an amazing school and I will definitely have some regrets about this in the future, but Seattle is home to my family and that is a large contribution to this decision. That and in-state tuition is much more appealing...

Well, good luck to everybody still reading this. And to those who are still struggling, it pays to be persistent. No matter how challenging the obstacles may appear.

I will be attending the University of Washington!

Haven't heard a thing from Temple so I called them last week. Said we should hear back LATE spring (unusually long considering I applied in October). I heard an unconfirmed rumor that they filled up and they are remaining actionless in order to skip their supposed 2nd round of interviews.

Not a fan.

Wow congrats!! Three years of applying, you definitely deserved this! Just a quick question, as I am still waiting for schools to get back to me and havent received any acceptances yet. What have you done after every cycle to improve your stats? (in addition to working)

First off, thanks! Trust me when I say that I understand how much anxiety can go into the waiting game.

As for how I've strengthened my application--my 'improvements' have been very school specific. I tailored my application based on what was very broadly recommended to me by UW after my first application because after my first reapplication, there was "no real weakness," in my application according to UW's advisor.

My first advice would be to start there if you need to reapply. Consult with your admissions advisor to seek their input. Assuming that you meet their recommendations, also discuss this process in your re-applicant essay in a way that suggests 'active improvement,' or something like that. It demonstrates self-awareness, initiative, persistence, and all of that good stuff. It also shows that you know how you can be receptive to feedback.

After the first year, my first objective was to improve my GRE. I didn't improve it much, but I was above the 50%-ranking in the quantitative and verbal section and improved my analytical from a 4.0 to a 5.0. I also graduated, which was more of a contingency upon acceptance in my first eligible year, but still. After that, I sought more clinical hours, specifically in a pediatrics hospital where I observed a variety of therapy populations and settings, including oncology PT and aquatics. I almost doubled my hours as well. This was the missing piece to my clinical experiences, I think.

I found also found a PT with ties to the university who really helped me throughout my application process too. Conveniently, I had been working with her through research--which was my finally point of emphasis on my reapplications. I work in biomechanics research currently and have contributed to several manuscripts and produced a few abstracts which have been featured at regional symposia. I felt like this dimension of my application made me more unique.

However, all of this was specific to my particular situation and what was recommended to me by UW. I did a little but of community service and helped with various fundraisers, but there wasn't much emphasis on that neither in my reapplication nor from advisors. I just wanted to be as "complete," as possible.

Hope this helps. Good luck!

What's your top choice ?

Thank you! I'm not sure! I really enjoyed the interview at FIU and I liked the campus a lot more than I thought I would. I'm going to visit Nova during Spring Break so hopefully that will help me make a decision between the two.

Thankfully I have committed to MGH, but I'd still like a solid answer from Temple one way or the other.

For those who are concerned about their "low" GPAs, I just want to let you know that it is possible! This is my first attempt applying to PT school and I got into my top choice school! I want to advise students to do their research on PT programs before applying. Make sure the school's goals align with your goals and will help you become the PT you envision yourself to be. All of this data and information is available on PTCAS 🙂

just got the VCU rejection letter in the mail today

I haven't heard anything from them yet. I am pretty content with my decision to attend ODU anyway. Personally, I liked the faculty and facility much better!

Just accepted the offer at MGH Institute and put in my deposit! I'm excited but honestly I am more anxious now than I was during the whole application process. :wideyed:

I don't remember, but when did you say you were accepted to ODU? Would you mind sharing your stats?

Take that as a good thing! Rejection letters were pretty much sent out all at once, and I don't think they have informed their accepted students yet. Keep your fingers crossed!

Do you mind me asking what were your stats? Why do you feel you were rejected? I didn't apply to VCU but still waiting to hear back from ODU
I don't remember my exact numbers, but my stats weren't very competitive in comparison to what VCU generally accepts.
pGPA- 3.2ish
cGPA- 3.5ish
GRE: 152V, 152Q 4.0 AW
I had 3 outstanding LORs and observed a plethora of different settings.
But historically VCU is very numbered-based. They accepted applicants who have high GPAs and high GRE scores, , and frown upon retaken courses. I knew from the get go that I was at a disadvantage, so I wasn't all too surprised.

I know a good number of people who have been accepted, so I am not going to get my hopes up.

Where do you think you will go? Fresno or Longbeach. As far as living I think Long Beach would be better than Fresno.

Big 12 out if state school or small instate local school? Taking into consideration experience, connections and education besides debt.

I was accepted first to Fresno, and then I was moved from the waitlist to receiving an acceptance from Long Beach. Most definitely, I chose Long Beach as it was my number #1 school. After going to Fresno's interview, I was quite impressed by their program, and their faculty is comprised of therapists that are so passionate about the school, PT in general, and the students of course. The same goes for Long Beach as I was able to meet some of the faculty when I was going to school there in undergrad, and I really love the area as well. Can't wait to start! 😀
