Does anyone know if any of the FL schools let you know about their decision before Oct. 16th?

I think no school in Florida or any other state can release that information before Oct 15, which is Sunday so I guess it will be October 16 this year (other than EDP), that is in accordance with the contract they and we as applicant have with AMCAS. Now some nice Admissions Director like REL might sacrifice their Sunday and make that information available on October 15, but I will be happy to get that information on October 16 as well.

The UF webite says

Does anybody know how it works, if the alternate list is unranked do they just randomly call someone when withdrawal occur, if she doesnt answer call someone else! This does not sound right.

Has anybody heard from UF recently?

Hi I read on another thread that its not quite worth practicing OB/GYN in Florida because of the malpractice they pay. Im a Florida Resident with hopes of staying here (a) because its a lot cheaper for residents & (b) I live in Miami so if I get accepted into Miami thats a huge +.

Does anyone have input on this?

Thanks

I mean I hadnt even thought about that.
Thats incredible, Is there any website that has the average amount of insurance one has to pay for each type of specialty? I mean because If one has to pay that type of money, pay off our student loans, and start a family, pay a house? Sure Ill be a doctor, living paycheck to paycheck all my life! lol Not to mention the $40,000 or so earned while residency...=(

South Florida has the highest rate of malpractice insurance for OBGYN in the ENTIRE nation....not sure the exact number but I think you can still get it off the AMA website.

Last year schools like UMich were sending out acceptance notifications at midnight of the 15th of October which was a Saturday.

So you never know.

All seems to be very quiet lately. We are not hearing about any new interview invitations or how the interviews are going in Florida schools. The admission process is like playing poker, I think a lot of people are just waiting for October 16 to determine future move. One of the most frustrating thing is lack of any information about some of the application that are being "processed."

Hey, are any of you guys not complete at Miami? I keep checking the status track thing, but it says I'm not in the system. I am pretty sure I sent them all my stuff, and I know they have gotten my money. I tried calling them today, but whenever I chose "option 1," in the voice menu thing (which is the one for admissions information) it just tells me that my "session cannot be completed at this time" and that I should call again later. It's making me crazy? Anyone else in a similar situation?

Your residency will pay your malpractice. Jackson-Memorial is a country hospital, and falls under sovereign immunity, so the school only needs to provide something to the order of $250,000 coverage. The UM and Jackson hospital systems, atleast according to my understanding, are the only two in ALL of South Florida where there are any OB/GYNs w/ malpractice. There is only one insurer in the area, and premiums for some are topping $400,000/year. Nobody can afford them, and no one is paying them.

Hi All, just joining the thread...I figure I might as well make it official, got my first Florida invite (Miami) today. 🙂

No Oct. 15 is the first day you can know in all of the US, according to AAMC traffic rules. That is unless you are applying EDP, which you would know the desicion by now most likely.

Congratulations!

You have great stats and talent, any school will love to have you. I am surprised why is it you first invite, you must have started the application process late. Is Miami your first choice?

Hey all, I just got the UF decision deferred email. Did anyone else get this? Does anyone have any idea of your chances of coming off pre-interview hold status there? Thanks!

I got my AMCAS in late July, and then got swamped with 11 secondaries in a week mid-August, and was waiting on a letter of recommendation till mid-September, so I've only been complete at most schools for a few weeks now. 🙂 Ah well, there was good intentions of getting in earlier!

p.s. yes, I got the UF decision deferred e-mail as well. Not sure what the chances are of getting an interview post-hold...anyone else know?

I am sorry that you got the decision deffered e-mail ! I had never heard the term, I am learning something new everyday.

It's okay. I'm actually pleasantly surprised. I was expecting a rather quick rejection from them. My stats are decent, but certainly not as strong and impressive as Pirata's so I wasn't expecting much from UF. I was just curious about what this hold means so early in the game - although I would assume it means they will reject me later.😛

That okay I'll be super happy  if I get some good news from USF next week and/or interview invite at Miami soon 😍

Miami is such a mystery I like the school and was hoping they will invite in September, that is when I got invite from all Florida schools but UM. I understand that they are concentrating predominently on out of state students first but do they think Florida student with similar stats is any inferior than OOS?

You heard that they are concentrating on out of state students first? Really? Could you elaborate on this? Did you hear this at a forum or from someone at admissions? I'm not asking for concrete proof. Just curious because I hadn't heard this before. It also gives me a little hope as to why I haven't heard since I am only a measly Florida resident.

I heard from both USF and UF on Sat. the 15th last year. REL emailed me, and Robyn called me on my cell phone Sat. morning. 🙂

REL said USF would be sending out an email on the 16th this year. Hey Q, which school do you go to?

I think you misunderstood me and I don't blame you as I did not explain properly. What I meant was that instead of interviewing FL and OOS at the same time they are interviewing mostly OOS with few select (based on their criteria) FL students, then they will concentrate on FL residents (maybe in November onwards, which means we might have to wait longer to get interviewed.) Just trying to capture better OOS first before they pick some other school, although number may be same as last year (about 30). UM has an insentive to take more Florida residents as the State funds them based on number of Florida students that they admit. This information is from combination of source including a UM SOM student.

That's okay. You were actually pretty clear the first time. I just did not realize that they were interviewing mostly OOS and highly selective Floridians first this year...and coming to the more average in-staters in November. It actually makes me feel better knowing that this might be the strategy since that I could explain why I haven't heard from them.

I was just wondering where you were able to get this strategy information from the admissions office themselves. But even if that I means I won't hear from them anytime soon...it's good to know or at least surmise what is going on behind the scenes!

Does anyone know what the policy or feel is USF for interviewer thank you notes? I know the general rule that it is just polite to send thank you notes, but that a thank you note, or lack thereof, generally has no effect on whether you will be accepted or rejected. But I thought I read somewhere that USF generally discourages thank you notes. Maybe it was another Florida school....I can't rememer anymore. Anyone know?

REL does ask you not to send them at the interview day, but I can't remember any other school ever saying anything about it. I think I sent a thank you email to my USF interviewer after I heard back from the school. Once you know your status, there's no reason not to send some kind of thank you. 🙂

Okay so I wasn't dreaming! I will just wait until I hear and then send a short and sweet note.

Lily: I have sent you a personal mail on this subject.

I had this two years ago in November. I declined an acceptance off of the waitlist in June.

Nice to know, thanks for the perspective!

Does anyone know why they discourage thank you notes?

Revilla, I can guess. They have thousands of applications to review. Hundereds people to interview and express their views with sub-committees. Defend their choices/rankings with the chair and then if they have to read equal number of e-mails just thanking them, which they will have to read carefully just in case something meaningful is hidden in there, it will increase their workload.

This is in the October issue of Playboy and also elsewhere in SDN. I do not claim this to be mine.

A physics professor was explaining a complicated concept when a premed student interrupted him
"Why do we have to learn this stuff?" the young man blurted out.
"To save lives," the professor replied.
"How does physics save lives?" the smartass student asked.
"Physics saves lives," the professor said,
"Because it keeps certain people out of medical school."

Posted here as some pre-meds may actually be failing physics.

Hey, I'm interviewing at Miami on Friday...any tips for me?

Hey, I'm interviewing at Miami on Friday...any tips for me?

Good luck!

Like deuist said, SDN interview feedback can really help...asides from this relax, and look at your interview as a pleasant experience where you can really learn more about the school and sell yourself....this is your one shot to show the school why they should accept you in person...sell youself but don't be too desperate...be respectful, strike up a conversation with your interviewer, dress nicely and GET THERE EARLY...I had shadowed doctors at Jackson so I thought finding the Rosentiel Bldg would be no problem...boy was I wrong! I had to ask around to find it and when I did find it, I had to ask med students where to interview and by then I only had a few mins before my interview and I must have looked like a nervous wreck 😳 ...so yeah, save yourself the embarrasment if you could...

Thanks BrianUM. I did look at the interview feedback, but I am glad to know the building is hard to find. I will leave a little early to make sure I don't get lost! Congrats on getting in by the way. I have heard awesome things about the school, and since I've never been to Miami, I'm really excited!

jus a few quick questions about UM, i know that the Miami (is it coral gables or miami, is med campus attached to the undergrad?) interviews about 300-350 students each year, any ideas about the boca branch? are they also interviewin ~300 people for a class of 32 then? does anyone know how many people they are interviewing? also for the ppl who interviewed at UM miami, about how many ppl were also interviewin there that same day with you? jus to get an idea, thanks!

UM Miami interviewed just over 400 candidates last year and, throughout the course of the application process, offered just over 300 acceptances. When I interviewed, there were 12 of us interviewing.

ok so it seems like the boca branch will prolly interview ~200 ppl then, b/c when i interviewed at FAU, there were 6 of us, its kinda weird to have heard from boca but not jackson yet...

Miami medical campus is not in gables, its in Miami, Close to I95 and 836. I've been invited to both campuses to interview. Although FAU gave me the interview for November about 3 weeks back. Apparently they are interviewing a lot. My interview at Miami is next week Friday.

Basically.. to sum up UF... if you get put on the wait list.....you can start hearing back anytime between end of march until the LAST day before school starts in august!! and a good number of ppl dont hear back until the summer time...I know SEVERAL ppl who got waitlisted at UF...and then got accepted in late july.... it kinda sucks.. because u're so unsure about where u're going or not going until the last minute... one of my friends got accepted at USF, waitlisted in UF... and so she was waiting for UF to accept her but she also didnt wanna lose her spot at USF.. so she accepted USF..even had all her stuff packed, ready to move to tampa, looked for apts in tampa... but then in late may she got accepted to UF....n she really wanted to go to UF, so she ended up accepting UF....n had to go thru the hassal of unpacking everything..lol.. but i guess if thats what she really wanted then its no biggie...

This is hypothetical and i do not want to be in that situation. Am I correct in assuming that if the waitlist is unranked, everyone on the list have equal chance as they can pick anyone for no reason at all. That is the impression I get from what is on the website.

Is a pre-interview deferred decision from UF as good as a rejection?

No, they could have as easily rejected and they are not reluctant to do so. I think they want to see their entire pool before making the desision as a lot of people with August MCAT have not yet applied (no application without MCAT score.) So there definately hope.
