Has anyone interviewed at USF already? I heard that they would call after the committee meets and give you a pre-October 15 "feel" for how the committee came out on your file without giving out official acceptances. I know you can't give out official acceptances before October 15. But you can give out rejections or waitlist, right?

Yup they give you a "feel". Don't know about the rejections or waitlist though.

You are right that they can only give rejections or waitlist before October 15. I would doubt that any school would call to give a "feel' before the designated date. I did read on this forum that REL told someone that USF will call accepted students on October 16 (not 15th).

I got a 29 on the MCAT, but gota 6 in verbal. I just took it again and think I did much better. I have only interviewed with Nova so far, but I havnt recieved anything from any of the MD schools. Do you guys think they are waiting on my score to make a decision to interview? Has anyone gotten an interview with thir August MCAT peding? Thanx

Unfortunately, Rel cannot tell you much, and what he does tell definitely helps and gives you an indication of how you did, but I still cannot tell the difference from the conversation as to whether I might have been accepted or waitlisted. However, I feel like I'm not rejected, so... until Oct. 15 or 16 (whatever it is)... despite that, I am very thankful to him for his kindness throughout the process.

Also, Dr. Hinkley at Miami will "advise" you as to whether or not you should interview at a random school in the near future as you might be trying to save money.

Good luck everyone!

I see you have an interview tommorow at UF tomorrow also. I guess I'll see you again tomorrow. Since we were in the same interview group at USF 👍 . Cya later man 🙂 .

man, Im two hundreths of a GPA point below Miami's cutoff for a secondary. I got my rejection today. Ive got a good MCAT, great ECs, what I feel is amazing research. Im kinda bummed. I hope this isnt forshadowing of a deluge of rejection letters.

Mprover, Sorry about that rejection. I'm sure it's an automatic system where they just kick out the rejection if you are below the cutoff at all. There probably is no room for discretion so that's why your great experience were not taken into account.

I don't think that many allopathic schools will even look at your application if they expect to be getting an August MCAT score – honestly, I don't think you would be invited for an interview with a 6 on the VR. Normally a 29 MCAT would cut it but a 6 on VR is too low. Good luck with your Aug results.

what do you mean about miami? is that after you interviewed there....i'm really suprised i haven't heard from them, but maybe they like uf are waiting for my new mcat score...doesn't really matter though, its still early and USF is my top choice and I already had my interview there!!! hope i get a "good vibe" next week!

as a general rule of thumb, USF rarely gives out flat out rejections to people who have gotten past the interview stage.

instead what they do is put you on a ranked waitlist. There are 3 tiers to the waitlist. if you are in the top tier (top 1/3 of waitlistees) or in the part of the second tier that ranks as being in the top 50% of waitlistees, then you'll eventually get in come summer.

If you are in the bottom 50% or lowest tier of waitlist you will most likely not get in.

REL will tell you exactly which tier you are in if you end up getting waitlisted.

Hey guys I also got the UF deferred desicion email. I would like to know what are your stats if you got the desicion deferred email?

If I may make a suggestion (having gone through this exact process last year), don't compare stats with other people. Don't do it at your interviews. Don't do it at your university. Don't do it on SDN. There is nothing sure to drive you absolutely insanely out of your mind faster than trying to find a causation between stats and admissions decisions when only a correlation exists. Seriously, for your own peace of mind, avoid stat comparisons with other applicants, because knowing that info won't tell you where you stand unless you know the total context of each person's entire app.

Thanks for the support. Still have FSU/UF/USF & Nova. Well see how it pans out.

You're right maybe a better question would be to ask when they received the application complete e-mail to try and determine if UF was just sending out deferrals to people that became complete in close proximity to the release of august mcat scores.

I got a complete e-mail from UF late Friday, 9/29, and a decision-deferred e-mail Wednesday morning, 10/4...all in all, kind of odd. Either that or they are really on top of their reviews!

I was complete in August and I got the email on Wed about deferred decision. I knew they were going to wait for my Aug scores, because I said on my app that I was retaking, but I guess it was still a bit disappointing.

I got the UF deferred decision email. I was complete in early/mid September. I did not take the August MCAT. There really is nothing pending that UF is waiting for on my file. I can only assume that they are deferring decision on my app until they can compare to the entire pool (including the August MCAT).

It definitely sounds like USF makes a lot more use of its waitlist than other schools. It seems like they will put you on the waitlist early in the application season, while other schools will use more actively once the class is full. I don't know...I really, really, really hope I will get a straight-out acceptance. It's a top choice school for me so I would withdraw my app at most other schools and the rest of the application cycle would just be icing on the cake.

OMG Page 2 at the very bottom, wake up Florida!
Bump!

Is anyone interviewing at USF monday? I'll be driving 5 hours and staying with my friend who's a MS1 there now. I'm pretty excited. Not about the driving time though.

Good Luck!, Just came back from UF yesterday; Incredible place, I look forward to hearing from them after Oct. 15. Drive was fun also, 5 hours also, from Miami.

Miami is such a mystery I like the school and was hoping they will invite in September, that is when I got invite from all Florida schools but UM. I understand that they are concentrating predominently on out of state students first but do they think Florida student with similar stats is any inferior than OOS?

Actually UM concentrates predominantly on In-state students. Even though they are a private school, they have state hospitals, and therefore they have to keep something like 85% of the class as in-state students for funding purposes. The state ties is also the reason why they offer in-state tuition breaks as opposed to OOS tuition...you don't see this with any other (or maybe few, but I haven't seen them) private schools.

As to the Ob/Gyn malpractice. I talked to my Ob/Gyn about this at one point-he told me he had to deliver 100 babies in order to pay off his malpractice and START earning income each year!! I don't know if the premiums have risen, this was maybe 2 years ago....it could be higher now. If you want to do Ob/Gyn and stay in Florida, you could always do academic medicine...I've never looked into academic medicine for these purposes, but somehow you are "covered" for malpractice insurance or you don't have as high of the costs..not exactly sure how it works, sorry.

I really hate to be a jerk, but am I the only person sick of this thread getting bumped simply because it falls to the second page? I get excited each time thinking there's something new and it isn't. It's just some lame bump. I could see if it's on the tenth page or something, but it gets bumped practically every day and sometimes more than once a day because it's not on page one. What is the big deal if this thread goes past the first page? It's not like it's lost in cyberspace forever. Just find it when you have something to say. Just my opinion.

People are anxious, and anxiety definitely loves company just as much as misery does. I don't think you're going to get anywhere on this one, sorry. 🙂

But isn't bumping it up only feeding to the anxiety to the point of indifference for many? I guess I'm just confused about why some people would rather see this thread on the first page and be fooled into believing something new has happened with FL applicants only to see a "." or the word "bump" instead of waiting for anything substantial.

I don't know. But I can tell you that last year's FL crowd was the same way, and I was right there in the thick of things. 🙂

im not saying USF is superior, but for me, it was an easy decision to make. I wanted a large city atmosphere (tampa) with an emphasis on clinical practice. usf arguabley has the most clinicial experience in the state. they have a longitudinal clinical experience program where you are are paired with a preceptor starting from the first week or so i think. tampa general is a huge hospital with much trauma and transplant cases. what you say about the cooperative students is true. when your admissions has a strong emphasis on community service, rather than mcat and gpas, that's bound to happen. i think in florida - its best to choose based on what you're looking for, each school has their own marketing strategy as they are all good at different things. FSU does have the new facilities and problem based learning; they also have a program geared towards making primary care physicians (family practice, internal medicine, etc.). look more stuff up and choose according to what YOU like. no school is far superior to the others, per say.

I want a large city, too, but I can honestly say that it isn't Tampa. I have lived in many cities and Tampa is my least favorite. It really does not have that city feel, in the sense that one HAS to have a car to get around and USF is one block away from the suburbs. I've looked at websites advertising the city and the school, and I see the word "diverse" thrown around, but I don't think this place is diverse at all. It makes me wonder about other cities.

I think in Florida the best fit for you would be Miami. I like Tampa because of the very reasons you don't like it. It is big but not big in a NYC, Chicago, Miami, L.A. sort of way where its toooooo crowded.

However, I agree the driving to near the hospital sucks. I volunteer at a clinic next door to TGH and live like 5 minutes from USF. It sucks to drive that drive if you could get a place like Miami where driving is less because they have apartments right next to the hospital.

I think the big thing is to research what schools interest you from all avenues and then depending on where you get in to decide what's the best fit for you.

Yeah last year the Fl. interview thread turned into Burnsie, Unfrozen, etc. talking about a made up band they created called Red Tide after they made fun of junebuguf for getting annoyed with them about something related to discussion on red tide.

They were a funny crowd and actually made the Florida thread an interesting matter of discussion.

Tampa is not a city. Its too spread out to be considered a real city. Its kinda right in the middle of the spectrum, despite its large population.

just curious, does anyone know if fsu has a student-housing program? if not, any recommendations on where to stay? i realized im goin there in 5 days and dont have plans on where to spend my thurs nite...

about 0.5mi near the campus, there's a holiday inn, days inn, and university inn. they're all okay. days inn is the cheapest and gives you donuts for breakfast.

I liked the looks of university inn, was not a fan of the holiday inn that I stayed at.

yeah true that. Tampa is somewhere between small town and large city but definitely not the same as saying Chicago, Miami, Boston, L.A., NYC, D.C., Atlanta, etc.

However, I tend to like the feel of tampa as a place to live. Its not too crowded yet not too small either. I like knowing I feel safe around town.

Chicago suburbs are also a good place to live. I felt relatively safe there. Places like NYC however are not places I'm sure I could live in.

How do you guys think Orlando compares as a city??? It definitely seems a lot bigger then Tampa but still doesn't seem to be anything like the aforementioned in my opinion.

I dono about Orlando. See, population doesn't really dictate city-feel... Burlington, Vt is DEF. city feel and its only 160k people. But it is most def. a city feel and I loved it there.

was it the fact that everything is closer together and better city transportation??? What made it a city feel??? Keep in mind I know nothing about Vermont except something I believe Panda said a long time ago.

Its closer. You can walk everywhere. Look up pictures of Burlington, Vt. Yet it still had that small town friendly feel. It was great up there.

I would say burlington has a small town feeling with big city amenities (cute cafes, dept stores, hip looking restaurants, etc). I live in a big city and went to a small town for college, and burlington reminded me more of my college town than a city similar to the one I'm from.

I completed undergrad in Vermont and I LOVED Burlington. You're right, it does have that small-town feel, yet it has just about everything you'd want from a big city, and very, very little crime. Not to mention Boston is only a four-hour drive away if you want to go to a "real" city for the weekend. My friends and family were all pretty shocked when I said I was moving from Tampa to Vermont for four years, but once they came to visit, they totally understood. It's breathtaking up there, especially this time of year.

TPROrgoTutor, I assume you were up there because you interviewed at UVM? Do you mind if I PM to ask you a few questions about their program?

PM me and ask anything you'd like. I'll answer to the best of my abilities.

I submitted my AMCAS today. My transcript was received about a two weeks ago, so now I guess I am waiting on them to read over my application and transcript, or whatever it is that they do before sending the applications out to the selected schools. Anyways, I am pretty excited, at least until next Sunday when I get my MCAT scores back (hopefully I did well).

I am a Sr. at FSU with a 3.4, will be about a 3.5 by the end of the spring semester. I believe I will get between a 30 and 35 on the MCAT (based on practice scores). My question is, since I am applying so late, what are my chances with the Florida schools?
