Quick question - if we certify our list, can we then go back and change it later? Or is that the absolute last step?

Yea I was afraid to hit that "certify" button. You can change stuff even after your certified, you just re-certify after each change. Your last certified list at 9pm on Feb 22 is what counts.


I'll post mine on Feb. 22. Mine is all set and certified. I still think about changing some ranks from time to time but I think I'l just leave it alone at this point.
 
You can certify it every five minutes if you want to until 9pm eastern on Feb 22. Ive been doing it daily since Jan 15.

Whoa. That was a pretty big switch. Out of curiosity, how did you decide to switch #5 and #8, but leave 6 and 7 in place? Seems odd.
 
and what is it that you liked so much about RWJ?
 
p.s. that's not a bad thing, i'm just curious about what appeals to you.

There were a couple of reasons I ranked Robert Wood #1. The first reason is location. I have family in the central NJ area and I went to Rutgers for undergrad. Also I really liked Dr. Whalen, the program director. He seemed to have a vision for the department and was working toward making his vision a reality. He seems interested in training well rounded independent thinkers who can operate in any circumstance. Some programs seems to view house staff as "labor", but the residents I talked to during my interview day sounded like they were really getting an education. And all of the residents were very open about the strengths AND weaknesses of the program. In general, I felt like the program portrayed a very honest and straight forward picture about itself and they had nothing to hide.
 
In retrospect I wish I had gone there. (I tried to buy my plane ticket late - $600 was unacceptable)
I've heard really good things about RWJ. Several faculty members at my school came from there following fellowships, and that's after landing good fellowships. Who cares about a big name if you're not happy?
The only downside I've heard is it's super trauma-heavy. I mean really, really trauma-heavy. So if you like trauma, you're golden.

Actually based on my notes and recollection RWJ at New Brunswick is not very trauma heavy. At least nothing compared to its Camden counterpart which is a separate program. UMDNJ-Newark is also very trauma heavy.

MCP. I have to agree in all honesty with the points you mentioned. I took very careful notes, and I know several of the residents personally at RWJ. They are happy with the program, treatment and training. Also the chair is very well respected in the world of academic surgery and a phenomenal speaker. The PD is very genuine and seems like a big resident advocate. He frankly reminds me a little of the PD at Vandy, which I hold incredible respect to.

I weighted my ROL heavily on the fact that the program that I would like to train in should have a university hospital, VA and a community hospital just to get a wide range of exposure and different level of autonomy. This was the only drawback of the program.

Congratulations for getting done with this part of it!
That's quite a varied list you've got there.. the only one of those I went to was U Washington, and I too was very impressed. It'll probably be in the top 3 in my list as well.

one of these programs is not like the others. what intrigued you about UTMB?

Why UCSD so low? You have some great programs in that list. Good luck!
 
UTMB is interesting because it's a big hospital without a lot of fellows, but only takes 4 interns. A lot of surgeries to go around and nice to have Townsend on your side. Small town with Houston near by.

I posted separately about UCSD. Didn't really mesh with the personalities of the residents there. As you can tell by my list, the more trauma-heavy programs are ranked lower, which includes UCSD. Otherwise, cost of living in SD is astronomical, even with the beautiful weather.

yes, the idea that the list isn't certified correctly or the program numbers are somehow wrong keeps plaguing me. but i saw "certified ROL" and the words "paid" and "verified", so i'm holding on the belief that all went in ok. i think it's just the fear of not matching based on a technical SNAFU that concerns me.

I'm particularly surprised by the relatively high ranking B.I. in NYC got from some of you. Any reason?
