So I don't want this to sound like a stupid question or whatever, and I know vet school isn't the easiest to get into (going through it myself). But I was wondering if OSU is just where the majority of people on here applied because so many of you guys got accepted, or it is maybe a little less tough then the other schools??

OSU accepts a relatively large number of OOS students which would partially account for why we see so many people accepted there.

There also seem to be the fastest in working through the admissions process. They were the first with offering early admissions to students and and are still among the first to make offers during the general admissions cycle. It also seems that Ohio is very close to being done with its admissions process. A better bet might be to look at last years thread and see the relative number of acceptances at different schools after all schools were done with admissions.

I think it's a combination of a lot of factors.
Ohio State just happens to be waay ahead of the game in terms of getting all of their interviews done and offering seats to the majority of their class early as compared to other schools. (I believe they are one of the only "rolling" admission vet schools... although rolling vet school admissions seems to have a different definition than rolling med school admissions)
Also, the admin said they were trying something different this year by attempting to do all of their interviews within a few weeks.
(Personally, I think it's fantastic. less waiting is always good!!!)

They also have a large class size of around 140 (most are around 100). Since schools overaccept they accept more people than this because some will chose to go elsewhere for various reasons.

OSU is the largest Vet school in the country, like you said, accepting 140 students each year compared to 100 or lower. It is also one of the best Vet schools in the nation, falling in at #4 or #5 in the nation (so it is not easier than other schools).

The admissions last year was like other schools, sending most acceptances out in Feb-Mar. This year is new for them, wanting to go thru the process faster than previous years. I guess to get those who are accepted notified so the best possible applicants from the pool are accepted and go there (but that’s just a thought).

Also, we have discussed this topic before on this thread, Vet schools do not over accept. They accept 140 students, if one of those students decline, they accept the next in line on the waitlist. The reason they do this is because if they over accepted (say 170 people) and all of them went to OSU, there would be a real mess. Do you see what I mean?

Where are these rankings from? OSU is a great school. They all are. And they're all equal. I don't know what the criteria are for making one school better than another really...but I don't think it means much.

I think any of the AVMA accredited schools (and a few non-AVMA accredited schools) have got to be pretty decent. Yes, some are better than others, but all will give you a great education.

The only real difference is how a school fits individually with an applicant, which can't really be quantified. Guys, all the schools are in the top 30!

Seriously, though - US news rankings are iffy at best, and with such a small pool it's completely ridiculous to rate vet schools in any order. Unless there's a major outlier I'm not aware of that's just...not good, those numbers don't mean much in terms of general DVM education.

Some schools do over accept based on their history and what percentage of applicants decline the offer of admission. Apparently OSU doesn't, and I know that Wisconsin doesn't, but others do.

I understand that many people don't take much stock in the US News ratings, but I don't know that I would say they are all equal. Personally, I believe that higher caseloads, excellent faculty, facilities and such will set a school apart. Granted, the rankings may be personalized for each individual - but programs can be differentiated.

As a note on OSU's admissions - as many know, grades and gre are weighted less than the interview/references/experience. This is a different type of admissions than some schools, which look solely at grades. I think this allows for a more diversified candidate pool - as well as to really look at the commitment of the individual and evaluate things such as interpersonal skills (important factors in a successful vet). Getting a 4.0/1450 - doesn't mean someone will be successful in the profession.
