I heard a rumor that the total length of training for IM will be going from 3 years to 2 years. I heard it is a done deal. Anyone else hear this? When are they planning to implement this change?

Can I get some of that stuff you're smoking!!! 😀

actually everything you need to learn during residency is learned during internship... after that you just supervise interns, sign a few notes and take a lot of electives with minimal call... so i won't be surprised if IM turns into just a 1 year residency over time...

I have not heard of this rumor; one of the ways you can do 2 years of general IM is to pursue one of the ABIM Research Pathways offered at various schools where you do 2 years of general IM, then start your fellowship training early. However I think if you do not pursue a fellowship (i.e. drop out of the program), you have to do your 3rd year of medicine.

I think they're going to do away with IM residency altogether and even cut two years off med school. Oh wait, that's PA school...
