I'm pseudo non traditional (still only 22), graduated Emory college a year early in 2000 with a b.s. in both bio and chem, wasn't sure med school at the time. Working full time at CDC and getting an M.P.H., and now i've decided to apply.

No, Somoa the original poster was right - 16,200 or so first year medical school places, 34,000 applicants, each averaging 12 applications ~ 400,000 applications

I thought there were less spaces than 16K

16K/34K...the percentages that u'll get into at least one med school is pretty darn high. does the US really have 16K docs a year retiring? if not, wouldn't there be a problem of overflow of docs?

Sup Kev. They say, on average, we need 1 doc per 400 citizens. With ~275 million Americans, we need ~700k docs. When you divide that by 16k new docs per year, you get ~40 years worth of docs. If most docs start at 30 and finish at 70, then we have a good amount of docs available.

The real problem is distribution.

I gave MD/PhD serious consideration during my sophomore year but decided against it. I'm still interested in doing research in med school though.
