no...this isn't the real deal. there was quite a bit of interest in last year's predictions thread so figured i'd post a new one. actual rankings go out first week of april. let the flaming begin!

That's right, UTSW is going to make the jump to the top. For years, they have been one of the dominant forces in the south, but haven't got the national credit from the big east coast schools. Look for them to make a run in the tourney. They been poised for years to take the title from the Harvards and Hopkinses, they just had to wait for the right time. With this years recruiting class, they should have the talent and depth to go all the way.

I predict Hopkins becomes a little more concerned with their MCAT scores after last year's scare. unfortunately, it takes two cycles for this to show up. because the rankings come out in april after all major hopkins decisions have been made.

I also predict that while HMS remains in the top spot, it will now begin to distance itself from the pack. Watch for the overall ranking of Harvard (100) to put some distance between itself and last year's hopkins and washu which were 97 each. I predict these scores will fall to 95 and 96 respectively.

Im really surprised there was "quite a bit of interest in last year's projections" seeing how this whole thread is an exercise in futility.

I just love how people are ranking their schools way above where they were in 2004, because they added this or that. Please, every school is making improvements. Think Red Queen. You gotta keep running just to stay where you are.

So I think the person who puts down the 2004 rankings as his prediction will be more right than anyone else on this thread, especially if the methodology remains the same.

I don't see much movement in the rankings unless there is a drastic change in NIH funding for a particular school unless they totally change the methedology. Also I think since the new CCLCM is part of Case they will be only ranked once together. Now that added funding from the Cleveland clinic may help raise case's rankings.

I think most people dont realize that schools dont move UP more than 1 (or on a rare occassion 2) slots unless they fell a TON the year before.

Im really surprised to be reading all these theories where Pitt goes up 3 places, Case up 6 places, and UTSW up 15 places.

for what it's worth, i don't think there will be much change from 1-10. below that there are two schools that caught my attention: pitt and rochester. both these schools have incredible new clinical facilities, and i see them rising in the rankings for the next several years.

Heres a thought. If the rankings were the same every year, would anyone pay attention to them? OF COURSE NOT! Its like watching yesterdays news! USNews is in the business of SELLING RANKNIGS. Now, lets think, if the rankings didnt change from year to year, why woud anyone buy the rankings? THEY wouldn't! So it behooves USNews to tweak and adjust the forumla from year to year so that there is CHANGE.

Remember how much talk the rankings generated that year Cal Tech was ranked #1 for USNews UGrad? Thats exactly what they want!

Believe me, the rankings will change, the question is how much, and in the case of your particular school, up or down? 🙂

I agree that all of our predictions are just hogwash... <imagines a hog in a bathtub with a pink loofah>... but it's fun boosting your favorite school up a few notches 😉. Penn, Yale, and all of those are already pretty high... so Pitt gets a boost (17-->15) from me 🙂

Will someone enlighten me on "last year's scare" at Hopkins re: MCATs?

I don't see how these rankings can be very accurate. Does U.S. News really look at the intangibles? Come one, how good is a research institution without good nearby food (Sonny Bryan's Bar-B-Q, for example)? What about school spirit? What about exercise equipment?

no...usnews doesn't look at the intangibles. that's a job for the folks at princeton review and their annual guide.

expect pitt to move up. We're already top 7 in NIH funding, which will continue to increase over the next decade. Our children's hospital (#7) will move into a new hospital and a 10-story pediatric research tower in 2007, creating 230,000sqft of new research space. We also have a third bioscience tower underconstruction (a 2005 completion date). Our dean has also decided to expand our financial aid giving by several million dollars to reduce student debt; and this year's class had the highest MCAT scores in Pitts history.

Pratically every med school I visited is expanding, building new facilities, increasing fundings, and etc. UR's Kornberg building, completed only recently didn't seem to do anything for its rankings. Since Pitt is ranked so high, I don't think it'll go up much since all the top20 schools are constantly expanding.

NJMS and RWJ, imo, are poised to break into the top50 within the next 10 years now that NJ has realized their higher education system needs to be brushed up. UMDNJs are receiving quite a lot of money from pharmaceuticals and the state. Also, NJ is poised to fund stem cell research which would of course be done at UMDNJ. Now if only they'd lower tuition to under 10k....

Of course Pitt's funding will contiue to increase. Almost everybody's NIH funding increases from year to year, especially the top research institutions. Can Pitt continue to increase at a faster rate than its peers though? Granted, Pitt has had one of the fastest growing NIH dollars for the last 5 yrs or so, and they are now up at number 7 as you say. However, I think Pitt's strides relative to other schools will start to plateau. Because its peer schools are also expanding furiously, I think it would be a great accomplishment for Pitt just to maintain its rankings, let along continue to move up.

Seriously, Sonny Bryan's is the best bar-b-q I've ever had and its about 200 m down inwood from UTSW. Based on the intangibles (food and foosball) UTSW has got #1 pinned down. They also got verbal commitments from some big blue chippers (G_Eagle, Soonerpillow, and Bad Mojo).

I dunno,

Nobody seems to agree on the importance of the list. Differences between schools are often trivial and arguably someone can have a better experience and better preparation for their career by attending the school ranked number sixty-seven instead of the school ranked number thirty-five (no offense to numbers thirty-five and sixty-seven). My premed advisor may have hit on something when she said there are one hundred fifty schools and Harvard.

I mean, for some people the list really looks like this...

1. Harvard
2. Everybody else

For someone who really wants to get into Case Western, it looks a little like this...

1. Harvard
2. Case
3. Everybody else

And for the vast majority of people on this forum it may seem even more like this...

1. Insert school with the longest "countdown thread"
2. Insert school with a famous dean of admissions
3. Insert school that boasts some revolutionary variety of PBL
4. Insert state school
5. Insert school with a really cool location
6. Insert school that "looks past the numbers"
7. Insert every other school

US News should only rank only the five or so schools that people attend BECAUSE of their rank... like places that attract students who really care about the numbers... you know who they are. US News should devote the rest of their ink to handing out superlatives, not unlike the ones that some of your classmates received in high school. Instead of "most likely to succeed" or "most likely to become famous," they should honor schools with "most likely to invite you to apply to their program and have the rejection letter out to you before your check cashes" or "least likely to allow its third year students to touch patients," or perhaps "most likely to graduate doctors who will return to the states with a nice tan."

I think (since ALL med schools give pretty much the same education and ALL are pretty good) that these superlatives would be more helpful than a list and some residency directors score... "Oh, you're bragging cuz your school got a 3.7 and mine's only got a 3.5? Well, that's because the students at my school are more chill and down-to-earth than the gunners your school lets loose on residency directors!" Splitting hairs.

I just noticed that virtually all of the UTSW people on SDN have posted on this thread. and that's cause they are right...we do have the number one fooseball squad in the country...and I liked that blue chippers comment...though I have to admit that Harvard didn't court me very well....probably the confederate flag on the back of my pickup and the fact that I dip like nobody's business and that my nickname is scooter and that...uh...running out of stereotypes...anyway, I am proud to be going to UTSW and though I don't really care about the USNEWS rankings, they are fun to look at...and to quote an oft repeated line on here...that's just my 2 cents!
