Hello guys and girls,
I am also one of the people who has been religioulsy observing this site and I always thought I would post when I have any new news that would help others, but for now I too remain and OOS, waitlisted friend waiting for an e-mail reply from Dr. H! I figured this was news enough for you all to know there is someone else like you out there! It is def. heart warming to know you are not the "only-nutt" going through this process. Best of luck to all.

Keep the faith everybody. I hope they don't string you along for 6 months then drop you like a cold turd. Let's just hope for the next generation of VCU students, they get some kind of normal experience during the admissions process at VCU. None of this rolling/non-rolling BS.
Good luck everybody. Things have been great. The knee is getting better, baby #2 is on the way, and I just got a partial ride scholarship for school. Keep the faith, and never give up no matter what happens with VCU. Keep me posted on your progress.

I've been reading the posts about VCU and you guys sound like a lot of fun. My husband is on the waitlist at VCU and we are hoping he gets in. I thought your post as Dr. H was funny and almost convincing. I think that is how anxious everyone is to hear something. While I'm not the applicant, I feel as though I am, maybe there should be a thread for all of the spouses to support one another? Or, if you are okay with it, I will just post on this thread. 🙂

I wonder if Dr. H read though this entire thing. She said that she been here, but I wonder if she was able to correlated who is who.

Yeah, bone got a partial scholarship, that's awesome. I guess things just worked out for the best. I just hope that I don't keep my wife and baby in waiting limbo for the next few months. I actually started looking for homes today in Virginia so we can get my wife transfered as soon as possible. :scared:

Bone just succinctly and accurately summarized the entire "status system" right there and then. Folks, I interviewed in September. It is now April. No change from then. This brings new meaning to the word "Hold".


Glad to hear your knee is improving, and congrats on the new kid + the scholarship! 😀 😀 I saw a link to a photo album you put up earlier, and your daughter is a cutie! I also hope they found a hospital gown big enough for ya, haha.

yeah I think all of us here left waiting have a few things to say about their "new and improved" admissions policy...i guess i have no problem with them telling me im waitlisted in march since i couldve easily been waitlisted a few weeks after my interview, but its ridiculous for them to have strung jbone along for 5-6 months before they told him that he wouldnt be accepted/waitlisted....

just so you guys don't all feel alone...i too interviewed in early september and have been "on hold" since then. it really is kind of ridiculous, that's for sure. on a lighter note, thanks to dr.erd for the withdraw. as an in-stater myself it boosts my confidence a little but lets hope some fellow Virginians give up their spots too in case i don't get yours, haha. also, has anyone heard from dr. h lately? i'm just wondering what kind of info she is giving out to people via email. good luck to all my fellow wait-listers.
 
You know, fare be it from my to say nice things, but I think the system has been better than most of the other schools I've interviewed at. I didn't interview in sept. but I did interview in early Oct. I was on hold then WLed. At least they told us what was going on. When the date for hold applicants to get update was delayed they posted something. We all know that we'll get an email saying status change if something happens and of course there is Dr. H.

At one FL school: We don't know how they will get in contact with us. They don't answer the phone 90% of the time, they take months to respond to emails and do so most often with a generic email. People in the office don't know when they'll meet how many people are on the lists or just about anything. Point is from where I sit VCU is treating me pretty nice.

I haven't had to wait nearly as long as most people (so maybe I'm biased), but I kind of like their system. It's much more direct and honest than at some other schools. I won't name names, but I'll just say better than schools that have things like "possible interview pools".

VCU's instant status update on their website is very nice and a welcomed change from most school's snail-mail system but I still stand by the fact that they need to decide whether they are rolling/non-rolling bc forcing applicants to wait until march to see if theyre even waitlisted just doesnt seem right
 
Colorado does the same. Except they only tell the ones they "really really want" earlier than March 15. Almost everyone else hears NOTHING AT ALL post-interview until 3/15 - not rejected, not waitlisted, nothing. VCU's system looks pretty damn good compared to that. There are lots of folks in Colorado that interviewed in September and heard NOT ONE PEEP until 3/15. And were then rejected or waitlisted. Doesn't that suck?

Gimme VCU and Dr. H any day. At least she responds quickly to emails, she's sincere, she's warm. Their admissions staff is wonderful - smart, perky, commisserating.
 
seriously. one cannot speak highly enough of Dr.H. She's truly a gem in a million, but Ms. Mack is also very personable, and like you said Shyrem, the rest of the staff are also SUPER nice.
I've called the office a couple of times and I think almost everytime I end up laughing about one thing or another with the other person on the line.
It makes the entire experience sooo much more bearable.
 
I haven't called much, but we can't forget Kenny! Albeit that he isn't always 100 % sure on about 100% of what he tells you, he is nevertheless pleasant. I wish Dr. H was going to be around for at least one more year. Those in her position at other schools didn't seem to really care what happened to the interviewees as long as they got the stats they wanted. All of us that get in off the waitlist this year should take Dr. H to dinner or something, anyone in?
 
Hi Goinverted... you mentioned you looked at homes...are you looking close to campus...do you know the skinny on the area? I was thinking about starting to look as well but don't really know much about Richmond. I thought I am just going do research until we get some sort of official word...

I would also appreciate some info if anybody knows of a good apt. complex that is within walking distance to the school so I can leave my car parked at home each day. Thanks!

Hey, I actually have a friend who is from there and she was showing me on a map where to live. For the most part, the southwest part of the metroplex is where you want to live. Much less crime, nicer neighborhoods, and good schools. I am still browsing real estate in the area, but let me know if you find anything good. Some decent cities are, Midlothian, Bon Air, Penn Acres, Woodmont, but this is just opinion from one of my friends. If there is anyone out there who lives there now and can give some more input, we would appreciate it greatly.

Yeah, I emailed last monday and got an automated reply that she would be out of the office until April 24.

Let me guess - your friend is from the Southside? I can see that she has a slight bias toward that section of town... I have lived in Richmond for the past 15 years, and some of the localities you mentioned are (at least in my neck o' the woods) considered much less desireable. Of course, I am a "snooty" west-ender, so I am naturally inclined to prefer my side of the line. 😀 I absolutely love the far west end, i.e. (River Road area - around the University of Richmond campus) but it is much more expensive to live there. Other west end places are nice as well -before I give you a more detailed opinion of where to look specifically in the west end, are you looking for an apartment or a home?

I am also sure that much of what I know about the Southwest part of the city is not totally objective and unbiased... but if you're interested I can give you a few starting points of places to look in the west end. My brother is going to UR for Law School next fall and he and his new wife are looking for nice, inexpensive townhomes/apartments to rent, so I know a little more about the area. Let me know if you want some more info. 😉
 
I went to U of R...the west end is so amazing...i've also lived in different parts of richmond too so i know what it's all about. the west end is the place to be...no questions asked.

Where should I look if I want to live either within walking distance to the school or along the VCU shuttle route? I'm coming down in May and I'd like some names so I can make appointments to see specific apts/townhouses/condos. Please suggest. Thanks so much!

The Fan if you want to live around bars and other VCU students (mainly undergrad) - the VCU shuttles go there. Or you can also live in Church Hill which is on the other side of the med school. Live in Shockoe Bottom or Shockoe Slip if you want to live within walking distance to the med school. If I go to VCU, I'll probably live in the Fan - it would be my top choice.

How far is River Road from VCU?? My wife and I would probably by a house or townhome.

10-15 mins depending on where on River Road and what route you take to get downtown. The nice thing is that there are a few different ways to get downtown from there - Monument Ave, Cary Street, or Interstate 64. Areas like the Southside really only have one major road heading downtown.

Is anything south of James river considered the south/west part of the city??

The Southside is generally the region just south of the river. The West End is totally different though. Heading west from downtown you first run into the Fan and the undergraduate VCU campus. Going further west, you run into the West End and if you continue on that route you will hit the Short Pump area (which is the extreme part of the west end). There is tons of development going on there and it is a nice area too. I would definitely recommend the West End if you are going to live with a family. The commute is longer than living downtown obviously, but you'll get a newer and probably bigger place for your money. There are so many townhouses/complexes in that area as well. The Fan is great for a younger/single crowd, but the crime is kind of high in that area as well.
