I totally went through stages of patience.... at first I waited patiently for 8 weeks without a whole lot of trouble, then I started freaking out every other monday, then I started freaking out every day, then I totally gave up hope.... and then, when I was so doubtful that I didn't even bother to notice it was Monday or to try to keep my phone by my side, it rang.

What an awful experience. I'm still recovering.

I hope this is how it goes for me because I really think I'll be frequenting the re-applicant pages soon! :scared: I am getting that icky feeling that I am about to start the process over again.

So Sud ... any travel plans now that you know where you're going to be in the fall?

Is it just me, or do you find yourself checking this thread at least 10 times a day? This is my 8th week of waiting on UNC, and I am a bit nervous now. It seems like I can't get anything else done until I hear back from UNC! I am pretty useless right now.

Anyhow, only 3 more days until the last Monday of March! 😱

I don't know whether I should be excited 😀 or extremely scared! :scared:

I'm with you on all counts there! Everybody I know just keeps saying "no news is good news." It's just so hard! My patience goes through waves...this thread at least gives me some people to commiserate with! 😳

Actually, I sit at a computer all day for work...I would say that on my worst days I've checked this site more like 20 times. Not good! lol

But it is good to know that there are others out there!

This thread is my homepage at home

Yes, I am out here with you. These posts are becoming my life... I just hope I get to post some good news soon.

Good luck :luck: to those waiting and congrats to those already in.

I just checked my voicemail!!!!!!

And...

Nothing from UNC.

No travel plans, but I am getting married in Michigan in June, so that will be fun. 🙂

Just workin' away...

Double congratulations!!!
Wow - I don't know if I could plan a wedding while applying! That's some serious stress! (like medical school isn't)
I hope you have awesome weather. It's so nice up north in the summer.

Has anyone heard anything from ECU in the past month....or 6. I interviewed their the first week of October and I am beyond impatient at this point.

Am I the only one who thinks we need to have more "Mixers" between UNC and Duke med students next year?

I concur with the common relief of .... nothing from UNC by stereochemistry. It made me laugh for a good thirty seconds! I too get excited everytime an unknown 919 number appears on my phone, or I have a voicemail that I didn't know about.

waitinginsc ... I inteviewed at ECU at the end of Nov., I was rejected in the beginning of Feb. so I would assume that in the case of ECU no news really is good news!! Now if only the same could be said for UNC!!!

ECU interviews like 60-70% of all applications. I think that slows their process down. They are still interviewing through the end April, so no news means you are still in the running.

Funny story! Last night I was out with my girlfriend and I missed a call from a 919 number. I thought to myself, "Well, maybe this is it!" I called the number back and it kept ringing and ringing. So I thought that it must be an office number, since there was no voicemail. I called it again, no answer. This was at 10:30pm in the evening. I am so glad it wasn't a residential number, otherwise I would've been cussed out.

So, this morning I decided to google the number, and I find that the number is to Linens N Things down the street from me. My girlfriend's sister was calling me to find out what we were up to. HAHAHHA! Hopeful thinking, I guess.

Anyhow, does anyone know if the UNC ADCOMM will be meeting on Monday? I am planning on enjoying my weekend as much as I possibly can, but it is going to be hard to do with this decision looming over my head.

How many were there this year? I'm glad to hear that there is no sense of rivalry between the two schools. Do you guys work together in any formal way, i.e. on co-sponsored projects that involve students from both schools? Is it easy to do a clinical rotation at Duke as a UNC student, or is that discouraged?

Actually, my friends at UNC have never mentioned to me that they have the option of doing their rotations at Duke. However, they are required to do their rotations at other UNC/NC hospitals throughout the state.

Yes. But the dook students probably end up in chapel hill at night b/c durham is such a dump anyway . . .

There are parts of Durham that are very nice. For anyone coming in to NC from out of state and not familiar with the Raleigh/Durham/Chapel-Hill area don't let this above statement mislead you. I am guessing (being the thread was talking about having a mixer between Duke and UNC med students)CTtarheel was meaning there is better night life in Chapel Hill which probably is true but parts of Durham are nice to live in etc. My daughter attended Duke Physician Assistant Program and then choose to practice in Durham, they bought a lovely house in Durham.

southern durham (ie southpointe...) is better than where duke is situated, where there're a handful of bars/clubs off east campus, but they're basically undergrad oriented. don't know if durham's really set up that well for duke grad students.

yes, i was definitely only referring to night life. Southpoint (for example) is a VERY nice area with tons of new developments and I seriously considered living there despite the commute. For any future UNC med students, Durham is definitely worth a second look and you may find yourself getting a much nicer place for less money.

How long is the commute between Durham and UNC?

And what about Raleigh? How is the social life, the living, the housing and the commute to UNC?

It depends where in Durham. From Southpoint to UNC campus would be about 15 minutes. Also, you could drive to a park and ride lot and take the bus for free (esp. since you probably won't get a parking spot on campus). From other parts closer to Duke it could be longer.

Commute from Raleigh is 30+ minutes. I don't know anyone who lives in Raleigh and commutes to UNC (unless with their parents). I really haven't spend too much time in Raleigh, but from what I understand it's a lot more big city like than Chapel Hill or Duke. I've heard good things about nightlife there too, and I have no doubt there's a lot more of it because it's a much larger city. Chapel Hill is essentially a suburban town with two streets worth of bars/coffee shops, etc.

Raleigh is more big city than Chapel Hill for sure, but it's definitely not a big city. Raleigh's restaurant and clubbing areas are more young professional than college student, so that can be nice if you're really not down with slamming beers and booty dancing with some 18 year olds. Lots of good restaurants in Raleigh too. It's really not a good commute though, because I-40 gets ridiculously congested during rush hours (as the week goes on, the rush "hour" turns into hours, and more hours), so south Durham by southpoint is a good pick for cheaper rent, nicer area, reasonable commute.

Another Monday! I wonder if anyone will hear from the ADCOMM today?!?!?!?

So our working assumption is that tonight is the final adcomm meeting of the year...has anyone gotten any new information?

If this is true, there better be a lot of phone calls tonight...

I'm going to put my ringer on super-high, even though I work at a library in a monestary. The monks won't mind my gangster rap ringtones.

Hopefully my hypothesis that my phone will continue to remain silent will be proven incorrect.

OK! I just got the scoop from the Admissions Office....got off the phone with them a few minutes ago.

All decisions (i.e. acceptances, rejections, and waitlists) will be in by Friday March 30! 😱

Letters will be sent out on Monday, April 2.

Eric in the admissions office said that if you want to know your decision on Friday, you can call in and ask them to tell you over the phone. AAAHHHAAHH! 😱

It's about that time!

GOOD LUCK! :luck:

WOW!!!! I'd rather hear that information from Ms. Lisa Long...that dude Eric scares me.

i'm getting a bad feeling about this, sense of foreboding. UNC never gives me good news . . . but good luck to the rest of you! 🙂

CORRECTION!!! There is some misinformation being given out by the Admissions Office.

Just spoke to Lisa... Letters will actually be sent out the first or second week of April.

I don't think you will be able to call in on Friday to find out your status.

Sorry to get you all worried

Yeah, I usually don't trust anything that Mrs. Alston or Eric tell over the phone.

Does anyone know whether we will receive a phone call or a letter or an email with an acceptance/waitlist/rejection? I feel like I had an awful interview with my committee person and I simply cannot imagine him calling me.

OK, so who do we trust? I would typically say Lisa but at the same time, Eric's answer was very detailed while Lisa's was pretty vague. Why would Eric be making up dates like March 30th and April 2nd? Sounds like Lisa is just being vague so if they change their minds they are covered. But I am clearly talking out my arse at this point.

It seems the office(lisa and eric) knows about as much as we know. That has been my feeling throughout this whole process.

who knows? at this point, I just want to get it over with as soon as possible. I have to let the people at my apartment complex know if I will be moving out or not in June by April 16. If not, they will automatically extend my lease for another year!!! Once that happens, I will have to pay over 2g's to break my lease if I decide to go to school somewhere else.

Dean Hoole...come on!!!!...i paid my Sprint bill 😀 today just so I wouldn't miss your call!!!

I called Ms. Lisa Long at the Admissions Office and she said that decisions are not going to be released till April 1st/2nd and also that she doubts there are going to be calling applicants anymore. At the end of the conversation she said, "Hang in there." hahahah

Thanks for the follow-up!

That sucks that they are not going to be calling folks anymore.

So does that mean the second half of that class that they supposedly have not yet filled will be notified via mail rather than a call? or is it that they have already notifed all the selected applicants and have moved to waitlist mode?

BTW, I had a dream the other night that I was requested to do a secondary interview at UNC. I showed up at the little room with the cookies and information computer and was told that I was being considered along with BORAT for the last spot in the class. In comes Borat, along with Dr. H, chucking and talking about how this school sure beats the medical schools back in Kazakhstan. Dr. H assured him, right in front of me no less, that his "extracurricular" experiences in the former Soviet republic would be the key that would push him over the top of the "other applicant." .... I deliberately rolled over in bed at this point to "change the channel."

So....

I just called and talked to Eric. He said the same thing, that final decisions will be made by Friday, letters out on Monday, and we can call on Friday if we want to know before the letter goes out. I then ended the call with, "Are there any spots left?"
He said, "There are mumble spots."

To my ears, it sounded like "a few" which isn't very promising. He also said that they were calling people earlier in the application season, but that they might not be doing it this week.

Who to believe?

Regardless, I'm calling on Friday.

Ms. Long did mention that they MIGHT be calling a few applicants, but the bulk of decisions are going to be sent via snail-mail. Also, she didn't really say anything about calling them to find out about the decision.

I just went by and talked to Lisa in person at the office. She told me the committee will be meeting this week and into next week. She said that the letters will hopefully go out by the second week in April. I definitely sensed hesitation and uncertainty as to concrete dates. Decisions wil be definitely be sent through snail mail.

I also asked if there were many spots left. She responded that "over half of the class was full" but that there were spots left, she just didn't know exactly how many. Interpret as you will.

If you check out last year's thread (it'll take you some time to find through searching), it seems like this is what happened last year, with final decisions going out towards the middle of April.
