2008-2009 AMCAS Questions Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Under Work/Activities, I have these awards/achievements:

Scholarships
President's List

Freshman Chemistry Student of the Year
Alpha Chi Member
Nominated for Presidential Ambassador
Writing Contest Winner

I'm thinking of lumping these things together as I have them listed but don't really know what to call them...I thought I would just put them under "Other" and list them as "Academic Achievements" and "Various Awards and Recognitions" respectively. What do you think?

I think there was no reason for you to resend in the first place. Paranoia is taking you over. Most schools get transcripts right, and it being a busy time of the year for schools (ending Spring term/starting Summer term), it's not unexpected that it take a bit of time for schools to process your transcript request and send the transcript. But if requesting another transcript lets you sleep at night, why not order another transcript today and another tomorrow just to be safe?
Well i called AMCAs and told them the deal...they said I should send another in case...so thanks for your o so thoughtful advice.

I took a class called "Reading and Writing Contemporary Poetry" which was through the general arts & sciences department. If it wasn't taken through the English department am I not allowed to list it as an English class, even though that is what it most relates to?

What's the code for the class? That's what I've been trying to go by. For instance, I have a statistics class; technically it's math, but it's listed as SOC so I put it down as a sociology class.

Please help. I'm stressing about these:

1) For a pass/fail class, should I enter PS for pass where the grade is supposed to be, or just leave it empty and check the pass/fail box?

2) I did undergraduate research, and it took my advisor and me longer than expected to finish analyzing the data and writing it up. And, this was my last semester. So, I was given a temporary incomplete while we finished up. I ended up with an A, but because of the delay, my degree was actually conferred in August, rather than May. So:
A) Do I need to mark incomplete for this course, since I had an incomplete for a short time? Will this look bad?
B) For the dates where you list when you started and ended school, should I list the May date since that is when I officially stopped taking classes, or should I list August since that is when I technically finished the work and was given my degree? (I wasn't officially signed up for any summer courses, etc).

3) For course name and number, do I just list CHEM and 011, respectively, or do you put the course description for the name, such as GEN DESCRIP CHEM I ? Is CHEM11 considered the course number and GEN DESCRIP CHEM I is considered the course name?

Everyone -- list classes where you think they fit best. If AAMC changes a course classification here and there, it is NOT a big deal. Do not stress out over classifying courses. Just pick a category and be move on. 😀

You should list it as English.

Statistics should be listed as Math, especially if you got an A.
Please help. I'm stressing about these:
1) For a pass/fail class, should I enter PS for pass where the grade is supposed to be, or just leave it empty and check the pass/fail box?

Yes. Enter "PS" or whatever appears on your transcript as your grade for the course. If you only select the Pass/Fail option, they won't know whether you passed or failed.

So:

(I wasn't officially signed up for any summer courses, etc).

A) Mark the grade as it appears on the transcript now. If there's an "I" there right now, mark that. When you send your transcript to AMCAS it must match up with what you've put.

B) Since you are still technically taking that class until August, go ahead and put you attended until August.

3) For course name and number, do I just list CHEM and 011, respectively, or do you put the course description for the name, such as GEN DESCRIP CHEM I ? Is CHEM11 considered the course number and GEN DESCRIP CHEM I is considered the course name?

Yes, that's right.
Course Number: CHEM 011
Course Title: GEN DESCRIP CHEM I

Just copy it directly from your transcript.

i know that ap classes are to be listed under your first semester (FR listing as class year) but i am slightly confused about joint enrollment during hs. do i list it under HS and not FR which would make more sense but since when did this whole thing make any sense?

When entering the course number do I just but the number or do I include the department followed by the number?

So is it:

Course Number: Philosophy 211
Course Name: Elementary Logic

- OR -

Course Number: 211
Course Name: Elementary Logic

Another question relating to this, I have a bunch of courses (6) from different departments on my transcript that are just entitled something like "Chem 381 - Honors Seminar" with a line below it saying "Topic: Viruses that Kill Homo Sapiens." How do I enter this? Do I just put for course name "Honors Seminar"? I do not believe I will even have enough room to put the topic.

Thanks guys!

Hi, I have a quick question about listing a withdrawn course.

The summer after high school, I signed up to take Intro to Soc as a non degree student at a local college. About a week into the class (after the summer add/drop deadline), I withdrew from the class. Since, this was before the deadline for withdrawing while passing/withdrawing while failing, the class does not show up on my transcript...the transcript just says "Summer 2003: Withdrew from all courses."

So, do I have list this course, since it is not listed on my transcript?

Thanks.

The first way. The course number is the department title and the number. So, depending on how your transcript is formatted, it could be "Philosophy 211," "PHIL 211," PHIL-211-042," or anything else. Just copy it DIRECTLY from your unofficial transcript so AMCAS can verify it easily.

For the Honors seminar classes, I would list the course number as "Chem 381" and the title as "Topic: Viruses that Kill Homo Sapiens" (sounds like an interesting class, BTW!) Then make sure to check of the "Honors" checkbox - if you do that I don't think you need to include the "Honors Seminar" part n the course title.

Ok, so I have a few questions. There may or may not be answers to these somewhere already, but hopefully that won't make anyone too mad.

1) I've attended three schools, one of which has a totally different weighting system than the others. So, while at my alma mater and the school where I am right now a regular class was 1 credit, a lab class was 1.5 and a PE/whatever class was .5 credits, this other one was basically 8 credits for one summer course. Incidentally, this is the worst grade on any of my transcripts, and it's a science, so I NEED it to be weighed normally. On the help tab on AMCAS it says to write things down exactly as they appear on your transcript, and then they'll weigh them all equally, but reading some of the posts here it sounds like they either don't do that or they're inefficient. Thoughts? Should I put down "8" as it says on that transcript or put down "1"? Would that risk delays?

2) the science GPA is just stuff that's listed as Bio, Chem, Physics and Math right? No natural sciences? Interestingly, my premed adviser told us freshman year that they'd consider anything listed as a "natural" or "physical" science on our bulletin to count toward the science gpa. Thoughts?

3) Are you guys writing down activity descriptions the way you'd write them in your CV or are you discussing how they were meaningful etc?

4) Would you consider a relatively minor disability that has actually affected your schoolwork to count toward being a "disadvantaged applicant"? I don't want to be a douchebag and say I'm disadvantaged and have them look at my application and think I'm just trying to get some credit for something.

5) (sorry, this is the last one...) My undergrad college has a premed committee, but they say they won't send out the composite letter until August 1st at the latest because they won't even care about letters until then. Are people sending rec letters already? What do you know about timing for rec letters? Do they not care about them until secondaries are in?

THANKS! (and sorry for the long post...). Good luck to everyone!

P.S.- Feel free to look at my MDApplicants profile and judge. We all do it. It's all good.

Bumping my own question.

I forgot if I asked this before but:

are you guys entering Future courses recommended/required for med. schools? Or your whole fall schedule?

I'm leaning towards the former

Well i called AMCAs and told them the deal...they said I should send another in case...so thanks for your o so thoughtful advice.

Not trying to be a jerk, but you do realize that it takes different lengths of time for mail to travel to Washington DC depending where in the country you're located. Those who have already received transcript receipt confirmation could be within the DC vicinity or 1-2 days postal mail travel time away. AMCAS may have advised you to send another transcript to appease your paranoia, but then they probably laughed like a pack of hyenas when you hung up the phone too.

I think you wasted money ordering the same transcript twice. Of course, the real shark play would have been to order a transcript for both AMCAS and yourself at the same time from your schools. When you would have received your transcript in the mail you would have known your AMCAS transcript was in the mail as well. Live and learn.

I am trying to complete my AMCAAS application. I have a couple of "W" grades. I completed one of them in a subsequent semester with an A. I will be completing the other one Fall 2008. Do I still need to enter the old "W"s?

I also audited a class once thr' work. I got a "V" on it (means auditing for my school). Do I need to enter it?

I just requested mine and did not use the AMCAAS transcript request that you can print from within the AMCAAS application. Does it matter? I just found it easier to request mine online...

They are considered "misdemeanor", aren't they? I just have a couple during the last 14 yrs. or some thing like that.

Never mind, I just looked at it again. It didn't require simple traffic or parking violations to be reported. I think I understand it now. I don't need to do anything in this area.

AMCAS says you must have your transcript sent in with the AMCAS transcript request. I presume they say this because it makes their job a lot easier in matching a transcript to an applicant file. The safest bet is to follow what AMCAS says verbatim.

Now, you won't be the only person that doesn't use the AMCAS transcript request form. If somebody at AMCAS with any sense can actually match the name on the transcript and probably social security number on the transcript with an applicant file you're golden. I would think they can do this as they have done it in the past. I think you'll be fine. But of course AMCAS will try and scare the crap out of you and lead you to believe it could be lost because of that missing form. If you're a gambler you'll let this ride. If you're a worrier then reorder them and provide your school the AMCAS transcript request form this time. If your school hasn't sent your transcript yet, fax them the AMCAS transcript request form and have them include it with your transcript when it goes out.

AMCAS accepts electronic requests so I didnt use the request form either. No problems on my end (this year).

wut r some awards that ppl have? r ppl even including any? not things such as nat'l merit i'm guessing?

Yes. ALL coursework must be entered into AMCAS as it appears on your transcript. If you don't put it there, they will find out and either let you know or just input it for you.

It doesn't really matter, but I would expect it to take them a little bit longer to match it up with your AMCAS file. It would probably help if you add your school identification number to AMCAS in the "Alternate ID" field.

I am including things like service and leadership awards, academic awards (including dean's list), and awards I've received at work.

My school has several competency exams which we can take to test out of certain required classes. These show up on the transcript as follows

MATH 000, Math 101 by exam (2 hrs equivalent), Pass, 0.00 credit hours

Do I need to include this under my coursework even though it technically wasn't a class I took, just an exam I took to test out of that class?

I don't think so, since you don't get any credit for it. It might be a good idea to call AMCAS and figure out for sure. I have something similar that appears on the bottom of my transcript - it reads "Qualified thru SPA 101 by competency test," but I'm not including it on my AMCAS. If it shows up actually within your coursework I would be more inclined to include it.

O ok thanks for clearing that up 🙄...I would say more than 2 weeks is plenty of time

Hey does anybody know if I can put in a "transcript grade" for classes that I mark as "current/future" even though they will not be listed on the transcript I sent to AMCAS? (My school didn't put my spring grades up in time . .. 🙁)

Please Help!! 😕

You seem to have all the answers...and yet so full of questions.

Earlier you said your school sent the transcript out on May 20th. It's barely May 29th with a holiday weekend stuck in between dates. And now you say "more than 2 weeks is plenty of time." You're stressing over ridiculous things. I can't wait for your posts about why AMCAS hasn't verified you in 3 days.

Alfred, for 22 posts you sure are getting under a lot of people's skin. I recommend chilling out on the remarks. Understand that this is, in fact, the rest of people's lives. They may get neurotic at times but hey, it happens to the best of us. Give him the benefit of the doubt. Also never have I ever sent anything via USPS that has taken more than 3 days to send. Let him stress, SDN is a place for that. We don't want him taking it out on his friends or God forbid his family. If you have nothing constructive to add, I recommend you add nothing.

I was just wondering about the AAMC app. They have everything but one transcript (which they should get any time) and my MCAT score which they should get July15 according to the schedule. I was just wondering if they will verify everything when they get my last transcript so I can submit or will I have to wait until my scores are posted and then wait the ~6 weeks until they verify everything. I thought they wouldvalidate my grades and stuff and send that to my schools and then pass the MCAT score along when they get it.

I believe that is what they'll do. The schools probably won't do anything until they get your MCAT score, but I think AMCAS will send your app without the MCAT score.

Two quick questions:

(1) How will I know if AMCAS has received and verified my transcript? (I couldn't find this anywhere on my AMCAS app, I don't think...) Following up on that, what do they mean when they "verify" it? Just match it up with my AMCAS account?

(2) Based on previous years, how long does it usually take for AMCAS to verify your whole application if you (a) submit it the day AMCAS opens, (b) a couple of weeks from then?

When they receive your transcripts they should e-mail you. Also if you log into your AAMC account and look under details it should tell you if they have received them or not.

Hi everyone,

I have some questions regarding AMCAS applications. Thank you very much in advance!

1) I already have a bachelor's degree and currently enrolled in nursing program for the 2nd bachelor's degree. My major is nursing, but I decided to take more upper division science courses instead of taking nursing courses. Should I put (check the boxes) these courses as both undergraduate and post bac?

2) What should I put for "year in school" if it is my 2nd bachelor's degree? (is 1st year in the 2nd bachelor's degree labeled as "junior"?)

3) I know that college level courses taken during during high school years should be labeled as "high school" for "year in school." How about a course taken at a community college that is pre-college writing course? That course is in the community college transcript along with other courses that are college level. Should I also put that in the "course work"?

4) How should I label "year in school" for the community college if I took classes several years apart?

5) I got a "W" for one class, but on the transcript it says "DR." Should I just write DR as a grade on the course work?

6) I had a class where I went to a high school and tutored students during class time (Education class called Field Study). For the question "Did the course include a lab section?", do I choose Lecture only even though there wasn't really a lecture?

7) I took a comparative literature class for English R1B (2nd semester of English, required course). Do I label that as English or Foreign Lan/Linguistics/Lit?

8) I took a "Performance and culture" class by "Theater, dance, and performance" department. The class was crossliniked with Classics and the main theme was Greek Tragedy. Can I label it as English/Lit?

9) Even though I passed ochem, I took it again at different university. Should I label it as "repeat"?

Thank you very much!

Hi!
Would handing the AMCAS early without MCAT scores place me at some sort of advantage? I'd love to hear any advice. Thanks 🙂

1. AMCAS will email you when they get it. It's also posted on the front page of your AMCAS application, where it says "Not Submitted to AMCAS" - click on the "Details" link in that section...

2. From what I hear, it will probably take AMCAS a few days (3-5 business days) to verify it if you submit it the day it opens. The wait shouldn't change much in a few weeks, but in about 6 weeks, the wait will slowly increase to 1-2 weeks and then up to 4 weeks or more.

1-2. If you started the second bachelor's AFTER receiving your first, what you need to do is list this second major as a separate school under "Schools Attended" (even if its the same school). List the second program type as "Postbaccaleurate Undergraduate." Then in Course Work, add the courses for the second degree to the second "School" listing, and select "Year in School" as "Postbacc" or whatever it is. If you started this program before you finished your first degree, I have no idea what to do.

3. If it's on the transcript, it must go in AMCAS. You can call AMCAS if you want, but I'd classify it as "High School."

4. Label them based on credit hours if they are split. Look at the coursework details section in the AMCAS Help section for more info.

5. Write whatever's on the transcript. If it says DR, list DR.

6. I guess you could choose the "lab" section if you really wanted to. For my preceptorship I just picked "Lecture Only." They really need a "Service Learning" category...

7. English.

8. No. Label this "Fine Arts."

9. Yes. Label it "Repeat" the second time. It's considered the same course even if you took it at a different university.

Hope this helps! :luck: Anyone please correct me if I got anything wrong!

Where do we mention Shadowing? The Activites/Work area? If so, what would it be under? Medically related volunteering?

Hi!

Only advantage you'll get is that your AMCAS would be verified sooner. I would recommend submitting the application and applying to just one school. That will get your app in and verified. Then when you get your scores back, go ahead and apply to the rest of them - you'll already be verified and the school's won't have an incomplete application sitting around.

ADCOMS,

Burning question: can medical schools see where and/or how many other AMCAS schools you have applied to? I know that they can see this information when acceptances go out, but before then?

Thanks.

Not before then only after then.

I told my recommender's that I wouldn't need their letters until about august, but my application will be ready next week and one of the schools I am applying to does the AMCAS LOR's with the primary app. Should I just wait to apply to that school until later or apply early then add the letters later?

Also, if there is a misdemeanor (MIP) charge that has been dismissed, but is on my record as "dismissal" still should I just go ahead and include it? (It seems that this is not a very big deal, but that lying would be)

I have some undergraduate credits that are transferred from India. These are lumped into "117 cr. transferred from XXXXX Institution" on my transcript from my current University in the U.S.

Any idea if these credits can be verified by the AMCAAS? They do say the following on one of their web pages:
"Note that if the courses do not appear on a U.S. or Canadian Institution official transcript, such coursework, although visible to the medical schools, will not be verified by AMCAS and will not be included in the AMCAS
GPA. "

Thanks!

Hi,
I started sending out the transcript requests today but do not plan to submit the AMCAAS for another week yet. If the AMCAAS receives my transcripts before I certify, will they keep them on file?
Thanks!

Go ahead and apply to the school when you submit. Make sure that you have the letters you'll be sending to AMCAS input in the LOR section, and assign these letters to that school. You will still get a secondary for that school, and the letters don't need to be in until after you've turned in your secondary. Check out this thread if you haven't already. 👍

I think you have the answer right there - even though they were transferred, you would still have to send the original transcript from India, and since the coursework is not from US or Canada, it wouldn't be verified. So I'm guessing you still need to enter the coursework, but it just won't be verified by AMCAS and included in the GPA.

You can always call AMCAS for clarification.

Yes. Many of our users have already sent their transcripts in, and some of them have been notified by AMCAS that they've been received. When they first get it, they'll match it up to your account and hold it until you submit your application for verification.

would you guys list a study abroad class under ECs? the class was in belize but i actually got to shadow a midwife, tour a few hospitals, see actual plants/trees that were used as medicine by the maya (this was a big portion of the class bc it was on the Maya way of healing), learn about the nutrition of belizeians, etc. for fun we went snorkeling, hiking up maya ruins, canoeing, tubing, site seeing, guatemala, and san pedro island for 2 days( i think i'll leave the fun out : ) or do you think i should list the fun as well?

This is a major EC for me since I'm a from a non top ten school and didn't get an oppurtunity to give free flu shots in the marshlands of bori bori 😛

For the wondering here are the ECs i have to choose from:
Tennessee Institute for Pre-Professionals Track II-started just now
ST. Jude Grizzlies' House-volunteer
Belize(above)
Baptist ER-Volunteer
GEN CHEM TA(27 students in my lab & led the Pre-Lab for like 90+ students)
AED vice president
Sigma Alpha Lamda Honor's Society Vice President
