## 2008-2009 Application Season ## Post AACOMAS questions HERE!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I had my college transcripts sent to the AACOMAS and was wondering how long they will be on file?

Obviously this is the 2009 application session and I will not be applying until the 2010 session.

Will I have to resend them all since it will be a new application year or do they remain on file for a certain period of time/years?

Thanks

They remain on file for the current app cycle only. You'll have to resend them.

Prior Applications

If you have previously applied and are reapplying to any of the colleges, you must complete a new application, pay the proper processing fee, and request that a complete set of official transcripts be forwarded directly to AACOMAS by the registrar of each U.S. institution you have attended. Transcripts and applications submitted in a previous year can not be reactivated. MCAT scores previously submitted within the last three years are, however, kept on file and you do not need to request these scores again.

So I am interested in if the AACOMAS rounds any of the GPA's?

For example, a 3.597 would be 3.59 or 3.60???

Thanks!!!

They round to two digits, and I doubt they would just lob off 7 1/1000's of a point like that. My guess is that it would be a 3.60, but I can't be sure. The good news is that it really won't matter for you. I promise. 👍

If you have a failed class on your transcript, can you take the clep test for the subject to avoid it harming your calculated GPA?

AACOMAS says:

AACOMAS said:
Advanced Placement: Advanced credit granted by examination, including the College Level Equivalency Program (CLEP). The subjects and credit hours you received for these courses must appear on your official transcript. If these do not appear on the transcript, an official letter from the registrar is required. Advanced credit appearing on the transcript without subject or course names will be classified as non-science unless official documentation is received. If a letter grade is shown on the official transcript, the letter grade should be listed in the AACOMAS Grade column and included in your GPA calculations. If a grade is not shown on the official transcript or the course is indicated as being passed, then enter the semester hours and, under AACOMAS grade, select "Advanced Placement". If the AP credit was a special category,
indicate.

I'd call AACOMAS and ask them, since your scenario is kinda rare. I haven't heard of anyone retaking a course via CLEP. Let us know what they say. :luck:

any course that falls within those categories will be in calculated in that GPA. Also, anything in the "other science" which is like kinesiology courses and geology (i think) and stuff like that.

I've taken a few kines classes (yoga, swimming, and fencing) do those count? they are all 1 unit a piece!

Really? Yoga, swimming, and fencing would count towards the science GPA? Those sound like gym classes, not science classes. 🙄

LOL thanks for pointing that out! Kinesiology courses are SCIENCE. Physical Education courses are NON SCIENCE. It's up to the OP to remember if he/she learned in a lecture hall or a Pilates studio! 😛

My guess is that these were phys. ed. classes that will count as NON SCIENCE.

Thanks again, 1/2 c. 😉

I guess being out of school for a while makes the previous 35 pages (almost read them all) very confusing!

I will be applying this upcoming year for medical schools. My question is concerning my transcripts.

I have a few courses at a Community College, my Undergrad, and my Chiropractic College to get transcripts sent in from.

When it comes to calculating my GPA: Do I have to manually enter in all my courses, and then AACOMAS will evaluate based on what I entered, or do they do all the leg work for me and create the .pdf?

My Chiropractic College was an integrated curriculum, so my only courses each quarter were something like Care (clinical), Structure (anatomy), Function (chemistry and physiology) and Foundations (philosophy). My Registrar sends in a detailed course description with the transcripts, but I would have no idea how to manually enter in courses for this.

Also, being > 7 years removed from my undergrad, I do not know what category the courses I took fall into.

Sorry for my confusion, I am ignorant on this process.

You will have to enter each course manually. You can determine how to classify your undergrad courses via the detailed AACOMAS instructions. Read them and then see what questions remain. 🙂

Has anyone else had problems getting your AACOMAS application updated with fall grades and new activities?

My school got my grades out really late and by that time they wouldn't send out an updated official transcript until Jan 5th. They mailed it out to AACOMAS on that date, but they still haven't mailed out my application. It has been updated on their website for at least 2 weeks, why won't they just put it in the mail? I have emailed them to ask what is going on and they keep pushing back the date they are going to mail it out. Don't they realize that this is people's futures they are dealing with!! The longer they wait the more people that get accepted! This is just soooo frustrating 🙁

I want to just call AACOMAS but I am afraid to be construed as rude and then not be accepted because of it...

That wouldn't happen because AACOMAS has absolutely nothing to do with admissions offices and their decisions. Go ahead; yell at 'em. (Okay, don't really.) 🙂

I'm sorry that you're having so much trouble with AACOMAS. Rest assured that they're not doing anything against you personally. Good luck! :luck:

I found a similar post to this, but I don't think it applied to D.O. schools.

My question is...

When calculating my Science GPA, what classes do I include?
Do math classes calculate in?
Do science classes like geology and geography calculate in?

Or, is it just the med school prerequisities? 4 CHEMS, 2 PHYS, & 2 BIOL

Thanks

All SCIENCE courses will be included in your science GPA....this includes courses that fall under the categories of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Other Science. Below is are the courses that fall under these categories. Math IS NOT included in your science GPA. This is a major difference between teh GPAs for AACOMAS and AMCAS.

As far as your questions, it appears that GEOLOGY will count towards sGPA but GEOGRAPHY will not.

Yes, your GPA will be calculated by using the grades from ALL of your most recent attempts in ALL classes. It doesn't matter how your school calculates your GPA--AACOMAS applies their own rules indiscriminately. 👍

fromi what i understand, you can retake a chem course at your local community college and aacomas, and medical school will accept it as long as it is the same # of credits. Heres my question for you guys, every schools chemistry program is slowly changing( i know must havent yet) but my school handles orgo and general much differently. I know most schools have you do inorganic 1 then 2, then organic 1 then 2. well my school has to do inorganic 1, then orgo 1 and 2 then inorganic 2. they believe that its necessary to be taught that way(not arguing whether it should be or not). My question is, if i retake at the community college who has the standard way of teaching chemistry, will it still be ok? the chem IV at my college is thier chem II, as long as its inorganic II i should be ok right?

The title of the class is what matters (i.e., Organic Chem II), not the order in which they were taken. If the courses have the same name, you're good.

Do ESL courses count toward the gpa calculations? I've taken couple of those 3 years ago and I got c on both of them, and each worth 5 units.:scared:

Hey everyone, I made a total noob mistake and didn't send a transcript from a 1 credit class by mail that I took during 10th grade. Because of that, I just received an email saying it has been "undelivered," and I have to re-submit. For anyone that has had this happen to them, can you please tell me if this affected the deadline date. Many of the schools I applied to were Feb1 deadlines and it's already past this. So if I re-submit after rushing AACOMAS a transcript from this school, will my app be void at those schools? :scared:

I would assume that any class on your transcript, regardless of what subject, that has a grade attached to it will be calculated into your GPA. That's my guess, anyway.

did u take those ESL classes in a college? or community based classrooms (ROP)?

I'd imagine so. I did some time in the German university system. It was technically study abroad but all my classes were AT the university. I had to take the German equivalent of ESL. It transferred back to my transcript and counted as some random class. If that counted then I'd imagine ESL taken at the school counts.

Any college course in which you received a letter grade and shows up on your transcripts with the rest of your courses will almost certainly be counted in your GPA.

Now, if you had said that you took an ESL course with Sylvan Learning Center or something like that, than things would be different.

I am currently in the process of calculating my GPAs for different grade levels as is done on the AACOMAS application, but I'm a bit confused...

What I mean is... Lets say I received an F in English my Freshman year and then retook it and got an A my Junior year.

Would the "A" be figured into my Freshman GPA since I replaced the course I took as a Freshman, or would it be figured into my Junior GPA since this is when I got the "A"?

Hey Guys
I just graduated and would like to repeat some classes that i didnt do so well in them.
Now how does the grading work ? Lets say i want repeat Biochem since i got a C in it. How does the grading work on the application ? Would it replace the old one ?

Thanks for all ur help 😀

Yes the grade is replaced by the new grade.

Can Exercise Physiology be put under Biology? It's technically a Kin class, but it's also a "physiology" class. For dentistry, you can put it under biology and also put bio mechanics, which is also a kin class, under physics. If you put it under biology and physics respectively, will they accept it? Or if you try to put it under those fields, will they fix it for you if they don't agree?

I put both exercise physiology and biomechanics under biology and both were accepted without changes by AMCAS. Not sure if it matters if you are doing the DO application or not, but for AMCAS they are both BCPM.

What about "Anatomical Kinesiology"? Were there any other kiensiololgy classes that passed as BCP?

a little while ago i saw a post that listed what science classes count towards the science gpa for DO. i tried searching but i couldnt find it. anybody have it?

thanks you

There is NO strict "BCP" gpa, it's a science gpa.

Please look at this site and scroll down to the subjects to see if your class would fit into the science gpa calculation:

https://aacomas.aacom.org/survey/views/applicant/collegesInstructions.html

As you can see, Physiology is under Bio and Kinesiology is under Other Science, so both would count towards your science GPA.

I understand that they both go towards "science", but I'm trying to figure out which one goes towards BCPM. Exercise physiology is under my kinesiology department, but some of them can still go towards my BCPM, I'm just trying to figure which one can go towards BCP. For example, my Kin 491 class (excercise physiology) passes as Biology.

For ones I'm not sure about are:
HSC 300 (Health statistics) - Does that go towards BCPM
KIN 245 (Anatomical kinesiology) - does that go towards Biology?

All kinesiology courses will go towards your BCPM for AACOMAS. You classify it as "Other Science"

Do I have to wait for the application cycle to open up in order to request my transcripts to be sent to AACOMAS? Or can I request them prior to May?? Thanks!

You'll need to wait for the new app, otherwise they'll be discarded. Great to be thinking ahead, though! You're on top of things! 👍

RySerr is right; kinesiology courses will be counted in your science GPA. If you're having trouble figuring out any particular course, it's best if you contact AACOMAS yourself; they'll let you know for sure.

thanks elftown and chocolate bear. so for DO schools, classes like astronomy, physical anthropology, meterology count as science gpa?

thanks

Yes. All three are under the "Other Science" category and count towards your science GPA.

Will any information I put into AACOMAS right now be deleted once the new application season opens?

Yes, that application is for matriculation in 2009, and it will be purged soon. But apparently you can enter grades and get a GPA calculation without submitting the application, per another SDN user. So if you're curious, you can enter your coursework, but you'll have to do it again in May.

If you took gen chem 3 times, would you list it as: repeat01, repeat01, then last repeat01?

Also, the first time I took a class it was a quarter class and the second time, it was a semester class. Does anyone know how to input that as a repeat?

Thx!

I've been trying to find the answer to this question for weeks. Has anyone listed repeats from quarter system to a semester system. At the original institution the series was 3 classes and 3 separate labs, but at the repeat school the series was 2 classes with labs integrated. I am very confused as to how I should list these repeats. Please help! Thanks!

Moving these last two posts to the AACOMAS Questions thread.

I have contacted AACOMAS many many times, sent e-mails and left a handful of messages. However, I have not gotten a reply. The customer service guys just transfer me to another line where I leave msgs that are never answered.

I have no idea how to list the following repeats. Can anyone show me or describe to me which class I should list as Repeat 001 and Last Repeat 001...?

The UG classes I took at the university under the quarter system were:
Biol 5A (3 quarter units)
Biol 5A Lab (1 quarter unit)
Biol 5B w/lab (4 quarter units)
Biol 5C w/lab (4 quarter units)

My post-bacc repeats at the community college under the semester system were:
Biol 2 (4 semester units)
Biol 4 (4 semester units)

These are both equivalent courses according to assist.org. The credit hours are also the same. 12 quarter units=8 semester units. Thanks!!
