Anyone call up OHSU and see whats been going on lately with decisions?

Woah just got an interview invite after being complete since Sept 4th!! I thought I had a silent rejection.

I guess the message is...for people who are still waiting, don't lose hope!

I'm still waiting for completion...submitted all materials on Oct. 2nd...what is the wait supposed to be?

Congrats! 👍

Just out of curiosity, when did they schedule you?

They gave me about 6 possible dates, just saying that I have to interview before Dec 31. It's for MD/MPH...seems like a slightly different process than regular MD at this school.

Btw, I'm gonna hop over to the UW thread to see how your UW interview went!! (or if you haven't had it yet...good luck!)

Oh ok, I was just wondering because I had heard they were scheduled through January now. It must be different for MPH...

I interview at UW next week! Thanks!

Please please OHSU!! Send me my decision so I don't die of impatience!! Any day now....hopefully...😳

Ditto! They should be meeting today..hopefully some people will hear in the coming days!

I just interviewed at OHSU - really low stress, and I felt like everyone I met really went out of their way to make me feel comfortable. My only advice is to know your application, it seemed like both interviewers had reviewed my application and come up with a few questions before hand.

I stayed at this fantastic bed and breakfast called The Inn at Marquam Hill(www.innatmarquamhill.com) which is just a few blocks away from the OHSU campus. It looks like a typical bed and breakfast, but the owner, Mike, goes out of his way to make you comfortable - he actually made me breakfast then drove me to my interview in the morning! I really recommend it, pretty reasonably priced and definitely worth it to eliminate all stress the morning of the interview. Good luck to everyone!

So I just got my decision from OHSU via e-mail and they said I'm on hold...poo. But at least I'm still in the running. I just need to keep reminding myself that most people are placed on the hold list and that its ok...haha. Heres to another 6 months of waiting...wooooohoooo!! 😳

Yeah Mike is awesome. Definately recommend "the inn" which is actually a house converted into inn. He has a cab driver too - Simon, he picks you up and drops you at airport for half of the price. 👍

EDIT-

I just received an e-mail too, on hold. Oh well.... time to wait a ridiculously long time.

seriously so much waiting for OHSU. I was wondering yesterday, if they don't even release the wait list until May 15th, and that is the day that you are only allowed to hold one acceptance, would accepting an offer from OHSU after this date only be an option for people who didn't get in anywhere else? Or can you de-commit from another school and go to OHSU still?

Its aiit, I am expecting the same fate. OHSU acts like a hard-to-get GF..😀. When did you interview?

Yes you can decommit and go to OHSU if you want. They do this after May 15th because they want to make sure that everyone whom they are accepting would be enrolling. This process makes life so much easier for them however it sucks for all of us, especially because they cant give you the financial aid info till June.👎

there is a lot of negative sentiment in this OHSU '07 thread, but it KINDA sheds light on how nerve racking their admissions process is for people.

OHSU '07

I interviewed in mid october so it has been just over 5 weeks since my interview. After reading last year's thread I'm kinda curious where us early interviewers stand. Because by the look of last year's thread the people still on hold by May 15th had interviewed in Jan-April. So anyone have any idea of how last year's early interviewers stand?

Does anyone know if people are rejected post-interview? And, how big/small is this hold pile?

Yeah from what I was told at my interview people are rejected post interview but its a very small percentage. Its about the same percentage as the kids that get acceptances right away. In regards to the hold pile, most interviewees are placed in the hold pile and the majority of them will knows where they stand on May 15th. So this is just a guess but the hold pile is probably anywhere from 200-400 applicants.

Okay, thanks for the information. This is completely nerve racking...

I was told, 1/3 of the class is filled by May 15th, and the rest are filled there after. So, if the acceptance and rejection piles post interview are relatively equal, then ~40 people accepted, ~40 people rejected, and ~445 people on hold. And, it looks like of those 445, about 40% of those people are given acceptance offers when all is said and done (unless my math is wrong).

AHH I want in....!

quick question: are we allowed to send extra LOR's even if our assigned secondary due date has past? someone just offered to write me one, and i think it would be a huge boost for getting an interview, but i don't know if it will be acknowledged since i already turn my sec app in, and the due date was nov 10th for me. anyone have any input on this?

It would not hurt to try, would it? I would say just go for it and send it to them ASAP. At worst, they wont consider it.:luck:

Hold too. Damn. I think Katy said on interview day that they start sending out more acceptances after the beginning of the year. Maybe this applies to early applicants in the hold pool? But I'm not sure if they re-evaluate us earlies again in/after Jan or if they just start accepting more of the recent interviewees...

I called her earlier today and asked about the whole "on hold" deal. She said those who are on hold are still very much in it and that the school becomes much more aggressive with acceptances in the months before May. So in theory us "on hold" kids could get an acceptance anytime in the next 6 months. Which I kind of felt meant, "its unlikely but it happens." So I'm not gonna get too caught up in it. This last month was hard enough. I don't need 6 more months of worrying myself to death. Its out of our hands now...good luck everyone!!

Hello! Congrats to all of you with interview invites--that's so exciting!

For all of you on hold--you're totally in the running. I think about 50% of people who interview at OHSU ultimately get accepted. However, my guess is that about 50% of those acceptances come after May 15th.

Here's how it works:

1) OHSU does a rolling application review. If someone who applied for the regular MD program was complete before you were, and they haven't heard yet, then you won't hear yet. If they just heard, then you have some more time to wait. That's the general rule, as far as I'm aware, although I'm sure there are exceptions too.

2) You get points (or something similar) on your primary + secondary. If you're in-state, you get points for that too. If you have a high enough amount of points, you get invited to an interview.

3) You get points at your interview. I think the interview makes up a substantial percentage of your points. (As in, maybe around 60%? Maybe? I don't know the exact number.) Keep in mind that you get points for subjective things too: your essays, your personability, etc.

4) Then they add up your score. If you have a high enough score, then you get an automatic acceptance. Most people don't, so they get put on hold. If you assault your interviewer, or say something grossly out of character, they reject you immediately. There might be other, more subtle, reasons for immediate rejection, too.

5) As the spring wears on, they have an idea of how full their class is at that cut-off score, and they lower their score somewhat, which allows the people at the top of the pile to get acceptances.

The moral: Don't sweat it. Please understand that no love until May 15 is normal. It's not that they don't want you here. It's just that you're not at the top of the pile yet. I encourage you to keep a journal of your interview experiences at each school, and then when you finally hear from OHSU six months later, revisit your journal, and relive what you liked and didn't like about it; same with the other schools you interview at.

I submitted my AMCAS on June 12, 2006, and I got accepted on June 12, 2007. It's frustrating. But it's worth it. I love it here, I am so thankful I got accepted here. I just kept telling myself I'd rather not know and still be in the running than know that the decision is 'rejection.' So enjoy your year as best you can--you'll be awefully bogged down for the next eight or so.

And if you have any questions, feel free to PM me. Best of luck!

do you mind me asking when you were "complete?" i'm still waiting on feedback...
Submitted secondary on 10/2 and did not receive a "complete" email, just the invite.

So if your pre-interview point tally is at some threshold, and then you have a good or great interview, that could put you "over" the magic number and they will accept you at the next meeting? Does this mean some people get accepted < 1 month after interview?

Some people can be accepted outright after the Admissions Committee meets for the first time about them. However, how long this takes depends on how long it takes the committee to review an applicant in the first place. If it takes them 6 weeks to meet about an applicant, the accepted applicant will hear in 6 weeks. If somehow, they make it to that file in 3 weeks, then yes, the applicant could have their answer in less than a month...although with OHSU, it probably isn't likely.

Oh, and I also second what Bubbles said about not letting a hold get you down. I was also on hold at OHSU - I interviewed in March, was held in April, waitlisted in May, and taken off of the waitlist in June. Do I wish I had gotten in sooner? Of course. But I still love OHSU, and I'm very glad that I didn't let that late acceptance scare me off.

Good luck to you guys!

complete: 10/14, interview invite today! awesome!!!!

Woah!! Nice job Crb!! Youre gonna kill it! If you don't mind me asking what are the interview date options they gave you?

I interviewed earlier this week and they said the interview counts for 80%.

Me. Looking forward to be part of Team Hold, in near future.😛

Just remember that a huge portion of the OHSU class will come from Team Hold. Two or three years ago, I recall that OHSU went to 92 or 93 on the ranked waitlist which is comprised of Team Hold members. Last year OHSU took about 50 members of Team Hold. Keep the faith if you are on Team Hold. It is tough waiting but that is how the game is played at OHSU.

Thanks for the info.

Hey Searun/URHere can you guys please comment something about the tuition and fees for OHSU. I am an OOS and it seems like I would have to pay almost $ 50K/yr for tuition and fees, if I am accepted. How much does OHSU give out in terms of Scholarships/Grants to its admitted students, i.e. how much should i be expecting in terms of my loan amount for each year. Any info you can provide would be really helpful. Thanks!🙂

hey crb, i got the same email yesterday! what date are you going in?

dr. bubbles is right on target, if anybody has questions feel free to PM me too!

I have listed here what the estimated cost of attendance for OHSU was for OOS students in my incoming class:

Tuition and Fees: $49,491
Estimated Loan Fees: $183
Estimated Room and Board: $11,000
Estimated Books and Supplies: $2,575
Estimated Transportation Costs: $2,500
Estimated Miscellaneous: $1,400

Total: $67,149

First of all, I know this sounds insane, but remember that most of these numbers are estimated costs and if you try, you can live on less. Also, OHSU allows you to take out up to the total in loan money (unlike some schools which expect you to liquify retirement funds, take out a mortgage, etc.), so it is doable.

As for scholarships, they are not generally awarded until the school year is underway. My classmates are applying for scholarship funds currently. I have to admit, that I don't know very much about these scholarship options (as an MD/PhD, I really don't think I'm eligible), but I'm guessing that some are fairly substantial and others aren't. I'll keep you guys posted on how the scholarship situation goes for my classmates.

There is also funding available for students who would like to conduct research while at OHSU, which is a great way to pull in some non-loan money. Most students take advantage of this during the summer between MS1 and MS2.

And...that's all I know. Hope it helps!

That was my life story a year-and-a-half ago. Same exact schedule, from the March interview all the way to the June acceptance. It's rough, I'm not gonna lie. But it's worth it. 🙂

they are probably considering your gas/insurance/maintenance or public transportation for the year. Most people don't live on the hill and will have some transportation costs.

Hmmm...I don't necessarily think its an automatic bad thing. I would call up Katy on monday and ask whats going on. You might have slipped through the cracks.

yeah, i will. I may have to wait another couple weeks for a decision 🙁

I don't know if OHSU is completely paperless now, but when I applied, letters sometimes got lost in the ether. If you know the people after you have gotten decisions already, I think it's fair to call. 🙂
